[2023] Is there any logic to how the character list is sorted?

It's apparently not alphabetical by character name, class, or mastery. Recently played is also nothing, along with total playtime. Time created? Also no. My other wild guesses of quests completed, story progression and number of equipped uniques were obviously ridiculous.

It'd be odd if it was completely random, so I assume I'm missing something.
