Hello everyone!

Instead of creating a comment under this post, I thought I'd make my own, furthering sharing opinions and thoughts about the events in League of Legends, as I think it's really important to talk about what's working and what's not.

As for me, I wanna talk more about how they could fix what the current Event systems are missing. Now I don't have all the details about what they're planning to do with the Phase 3.0 of the Mythic Content Overhaul, but the popular assumption here is that it's just a fancy new tab for having the same thing, and if that's the case, it's really disappointing.

I'm making this post with the intention of people offering their own opinion and ideas as well as expressing my own about how the event system and everything regarding it could look like to please the community, because as we all know, the community is really not liking it.

I thought about changes the event system could get for a long, long time, but never really found a way to properly put it out there, now that because of the linked post, this conversation has been started and I think it's an appropriate time to talk about it before everything settles down, so as to not get lost in that post's comments, I thought about making it it's own post.

Side note: I'm not hating on Riot Games, I should mention that I absolutely LOVE the game, I love the Lore and I love the content they bring us EVERY two weeks, I just want the content to feel fair to obtain and, like Riot has already said, I don't want to sign away 30-days just to get all the rewards. They know that's what we want, now I just hope they'd do something to actually make that happen.

I don't wanna repeat what has already been said about Events feeling way too grindy, because we all know it's true, I wanna offer an idea of what could be fixed, without seriously impacting the prices of Riot's products but significantly reduce the grindy-ness of the events.

The main reason event systems feel too grindy is because of everything the Event System has to offer at once, the main part of that being, and you guessed it, the infamous Prestige skins.

These skins are supposed to be the all flashy "look at me I'm special" exclusive skins. They certainly are special, the way they look has improved a lot over the years as well, and the way they keep them exclusive is give them special loading screen borders + icon if you buy it in the event shop/during the showcase event. The event shop prestiges, specifically, aren't that grindy as we get almost enough free tokens to buy them. That being said, there's still a major problem when we decide whether or not we get them, and that's Event Borders & Chromas.

https://preview.redd.it/tgz6ytff8g391.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=f053a5e7ed999c6096e77cad8d6e6bece7a86fd6

Borders are a way for players to be recognized as the 'early buyers'. The 'mains of the champion'. And that's alright. If I play a champion, I really like to buy the border for that champion. Riot knows that, that's why they make it so that your FOMO plays a major role when you decide what you wanna buy in the Event Shop. On top of that, there's event chromas. I feel like that's an extra way for them to play on our FOMO and I just can't find a proper justification for that, it feels excessive, but alas, they're here.

However, there are players who don't have just 1 main. They like to play multiple champions, and they like to get borders for them. That, itself, wouldn't be a problem if you didn't have to think about the Prestige skin, in case you also like the champion it's getting one. Border and Chroma for a champion you like costs 550 tokens, that's more than 1/4th of a Prestige skin. If you really like the Prestige skin in the shop, you have to pray that you don't like anything else because for even just 1 additional champion you will have to grind those 30 days which feels more like a day job rather than playing the game you like.

Borders were once already obtained for skins that you bought them on release, so they could offer to do it in a similar way again. Event chromas could follow the similar formula, and together they could do the following:

- The skins cost 1350 RP and do not feature a border, border + icon bundles could be sold in the shop for 550 RP each just like they do when they're not a part of the event.

- If you buy the Event Pass, any skin you buy during the Event automatically grants you it's Border + Icon.

- Furthermore, the Event track could feature Chroma Tokens that you can use to acquire an Event Chroma for an Event Skin you bought during the Event, one for each skin. If you bought only a few Event skins or none, you could simply trade Chroma Tokens for additional Event tokens or even something like Orange essence.

- Prestige skins remain at 2000 tokens, but the overall token gain could be reduced since you get all the Borders and Chromas that you want without spending any tokens, so you can focus all your token gain on the Prestige skin, or, if you don't want it, the 2200 token 125 Mythic Essence bundle.

This would reduce the amount of grindy-ness in the pass and also allow us to get Chromas and Borders for all the champions in the event you liked, the only limitation being you're actually required to buy the skin, which makes sense, while also allowing you to get the Prestige skin without worrying about borders and chromas.

This is probably equally as frustrating as the grindy-ness of the events. Every event features a gamemode the community has VASTLY overplayed to the point people don't event want it back. I remember when URF was so rare everytime it came back I was so happy, now, the reaction I have is "URF? Again??".

I'm sure players feel the same, so the idea I had to somewhat fix that is to let players decide which gamemode comes back next. Few weeks before the Event begins, they could make a vote pool and include every gamemode that could be featured in the next Event. The one that comes back is the one with the most votes. I'm not talking about brining back stuff like Ascension, they has already stated why it probably won't be back and I understand, but as we're currently very limited with the amount of gamemodes, which are:

- URF

- ARURF

- One for All

- Nexus Blitz

- Ultimate Spellbook,

it would at the very least be fair that we vote. I'm sure people wouldn't vote URF being back again after we just played it for a whole month, but to be sure, it could be removed from the poll for 1-2 events so people can experience other things. Even the ARAM gamemodes like Legend of the King could be fun to see back, and by voting a gamemode would guarantee that the vast majority would actually like to play it.

Some events, the big summer ones we had in the past like Ruination and Spirit Blossom, could also, at the very least, feature an accented Summoner's Rift with the theme of the Event, since we probably aren't getting a PVE gamemode, because it takes tons of production time. That was done with Spirit Blossom for Nexus Blitz, and that was great, but if we can't get new map gamemodes, it would at least be fun to play Summoner's Rift in a whole other universe, like Star Guardian or maybe even just another region like Demacia. I greatly miss the Winter themed Map because it was just so different from anything else like the Arcane Map Accents, the whole different map that literally made you feel like in the Winter Wonderland even if there's no winter in your country. That could be done once a year during the summer event since I imagine it's great effort to put in but the players would be overwhelmingly happy.

That's basically all I wanted to say, most importantly I wanted to start or rather continue the conversation that has been started and I hope the Event System Overhaul will turn out to be much better than just a visual eye candy.

Thank you for reading, cheers!

Thanks for taking the time to write this up - it’s a really constructive conversation-starter. A few thoughts to address your feedback and some of what I’m seeing others talk about in the comments:

Map accents are something we know that players like and add flavor and variety to the event. As a few people have already mentioned, Elemental Drakes made this a lot more complicated to do, since SR is a very hand-crafted map and is not modular or easy to edit at all (this is a tradeoff we made intentionally with the SR update so the game could still run on extremely low spec machines). We also have limited art bandwidth in this space. That being said - we miss the cozy feels of the snow map (as just one example) as much as all of you, and we are exploring ways to resource some changes there. I can’t make any promises about timelines, but we love how much map accents spruce up the play experience, and we want to find ways to make this easier and more sustainable to do.

We hear the sentiment about game modes. We will have more to share on this in the future, but the tl;dr is that we are rebuilding our Modes team with a focus on making Modes easier to ship (modernizing old tools and capabilities) and unlocking our ability to create more fresh experiences, like we did with Ultimate Spellbook. In addition, the team is exploring fun ARAM updates with some cool QoL stuff. Again, because of how in flux this all is, we don’t have any timelines (or hard details) to share yet. But we hear you and recognize that rotating through the same stable of modes is getting stale. The team is REALLY excited about this space (and has some super promising ideas), and I’m stoked to start refurbishing the foundation here, but the team will need time. Please bear with us.

Tokens, content availability, grind length. Okay, lots to unpack here. We have done a lot of research on event passes in League, and players do value the ability to choose their rewards. Because we have SO MANY champions, we try to cast a wide net of options in each shop to appeal to as many players as possible for events. Choice here is a double-edged sword: for people who want it all, this is painful, for people who wouldn’t care unless we had something for their main, it’s exciting. So, I appreciate that your suggestions stay within the bounds of player choice and the token system.

To elaborate on this a bit more, we have a bunch of different types of players who engage with passes: A large chunk of players literally skip every piece of exclusive content and ONLY buy event orbs. We don’t cap token earn rates or orb purchases so players who play a ton of League get an enormous amount of value here (like… a LOT of value). Then, there’s people who choose to get a Prestige skin, which is a relatively small %, because again - the content is very champion-specific. If you don’t play Talon, the top prize in the MSI pass is largely irrelevant to you. And then, finally, there are folks who collect chromas and other accessories, which is the smallest group of the bunch. Even when controlling for eligibility (eg - earning enough tokens to get whatever they want) these cohorts don’t shift much.

The point I’m trying to make is there isn’t ONE way that players value Event Passes, and finding the best way to appeal to each of them is a tricky balancing act. With our Event Pass Overhaul later this year, we’ll have more levers and capabilities to guarantee a floor of value that ALL players get if they buy the pass. The goal here is that earning tokens almost feels like a bonus, because the main milestone track gives you your money’s worth and then some with moderate levels of play. You should be able to feel like the Pass was still worth your time and money, even if you fall short of Prestige, basically. This also gives us more flexibility to make missions more interesting and make the grind more fun and varied, which is something we are constrained on currently because Missions are the sole source of all guaranteed rewards.

All that being said, your suggestions about chroma availability are interesting. I think there’s room to improve here, but the team is heads down on the Event Pass Overhaul, and can tackle those spaces with our new foundation after it ships later this year (the team is in the final stretch, and scope creep at this stage would just delay it even more).

Again, appreciate the post - excited for the team to share more when they’re ready.

Would there be any feasibility for One For All Mirror Mode to come back? One of my main issues which causes me grief in OFA is that your entire team can get hard countered by the entire opposing team. OFA:MM on Howling Abyss I thought was a neat riff on the original idea. First being on Howling Abyss lowered the stakes of the game by the quick nature of the map. And in addition to getting rid of the hard countering in OFA, you also prompted different builds. My most memorable game was a OFA:MM of all Braums, each team had a crit Braum, a tank Braum, an AP Braum, and an on hit Braum. Fights were long, figuring out which Braum to focus was a topic of discussion in each fight.

I'm hoping being similar to OFA would make this mode easier to bring back, but at the very least I would like to voice this opinion to you.

Great points. I think there is certainly more we could do with OFA in the future, including improvements to the “oh no their pick is the hard counter to our pick” situation that can happen sometimes. I’ll send this to the Modes team and see what they think :)

Hi Ken! Whe you say later this year, you mean next event after MSI pass? Or like later September-December?

Q4 basically. So September - December. We are targeting Worlds. 👀

Events like Odyssey both directly sold skins and kept the playerbase overall engaged- you don't track that with hours played.

Games are not valued just on pure playtime, you don't call a singleplayer games a failure because people only played it once.

For tracking it would require creativity in data teams - social media keyword tracking, comparatives between skin lines with events vs skin lines without and surveying player enjoyment on them. It is not random that we are still talking about odyssey not pass event #14

I hear you - we can’t (and don’t) use the same measurements of success for a PvE experience that is not as repeatable as a PvP experience. Still - League as a game is not built to support these types of experiences in a way that is sustainable or empowering for the teams who have put them together. It is extremely difficult to work against what the game is natively built for to create a PvE experience, and at a certain point, it begs the question of whether or not it would be better to satisfy the PvE needs in other, more fleshed out ways (like Ruined King for example).

We know that there is a (relatively) small, but ultra-satisfied group of players who loved Odyssey, and more broadly, it was an exciting moment for League. We want to find ways to build on those feelings that are complementary to what League is designed as (a PvP game) and recreate those same “holy sh*t this is super unique!” reactions.
