With its device fingerprinting, Vanguard also gives us a renewed opportunity to sink teeth into boosting, smurfing, and account compromise. We'll be able to revoke rewards boosters didn't deserve, get smurfs to their proper rating faster, and maybe even invalidate "unfair" premades. Ranked statistics won't be as poisoned by scripters, facilitating easier balancing of high risk-and-reward champions, and games ruined by cheaters can eventually be "undone," returning LP to those affected.

This kinda huge

This is something we're very excited to leverage as it helps the overall ecosystem even beyond reduced cheating

Yeah you can just right click it in your system tray and select Exit Vanguard. It'll warn you that if you want to play a game that requires Vanguard you'll have to restart your PC - you just click "Ok" on that prompt and it's off.

Q: What if I'm having technical issues with Vanguard?

These days, Vanguard suffers from a lot of attribution bias, and the majority of bugs we see actually come from external sources that are difficult to lock down. One of the largest perpetrators recently has been the distribution of pirated software that toggles a registry option ("DevOverrideEnable") and allows "different" versions of key Windows files to be loaded into all running processes. Now, we can't say exactly what your intentions would be for doing something like this (wink), but what we can say is that Vanguard doesn't like when corrupted windows files are loaded into VALORANT—we use a great many of them to do tampering checks ourselves. We'd also recommend that you be careful what you turn off windows defender for, because it's doing what it says on the tin (defending windows).

Anyways, issues can arise, but please submit a ticket. We'll get you sorted.

I might have downloaded software for one of my classes, and from my understanding as it was a license type of program it change something from the windows key

am i f**ked?

There'll be a modal going out in 14.8 (currently on PBE fwiw) that will check your PC to let you know if it's ready for Vanguard. If you get an alert that something isn't right, there's troubleshooting steps and a player support link that can help you get things set up in time for launch, which is currently planned for 14.9.

Even if I used PC for non Vanguard things, wouldn’t it still boot aslong as those applications and hooks are closed and not running? Or would I still need to restart etc

Yeah the article says it better than I would, so I'll just quote the bit that speaks directly to this.

Why is it always on?

Vanguard is not really "running all the time." The driver loads at boot, but nothing is making calls to it, and there's no network connectivity until you run one of Riot's games. It's literally just sitting there (menacingly), so that it can attest to the fact that nothing's happened between Windows loading and the game starting that would break the operating system.

When you launch League, the Vanguard client contacts the driver to confirm that it thinks everything is 100%, and if so, you receive a valid anti-cheat session and may connect to the game server. Instructions from the client then start enabling features within the driver to watch for things that might tamper with the signed League process and prevent them. You can always disable the driver whenever you'd like-you'll just need a fresh reboot to "recertify" the integrity of the trust chain before you jump into game.

We do talk about false positives a bit in there but if there ever is, we'll obviously fix it, and ideally also tell you about it if it does happen. The threshold for triggering a false positive reversal is extremely low because we never want to take that risk of being unsure. We want to be as transparent as possible so that Vanguard and the team behind it has your trust and maintains it.

We're also about to be a lot more active in engaging with people claiming that they are a "false positive". We generally review almost all the ones that we see across various platforms when we can and the vast majority are either sadly not telling the truth, or simply just compromised accounts.

This topic is discussed in the blog under section "Q: I've heard that Vanguard bricks keyboards?", so you can get some more context there. The tl;dr though is that we moved away from the widespread vulnerable driver blocking strategy about 4 years ago, and it was only during a limited period in launch.

Will I receive a punishment for opening league with cheat engine open, or will I have to restart my computer entirely?

The behavior will look similar with Vanguard, so it would be an error/game crash just like it is currently on League.

We don't indiscriminately ban for AHK (only targeting cheat scripts), and many players use many unrelated scripts safely, but I can't ensure long term compatibility.

Correct, that is the flow you'd use. FWIW, Vanguard is not monitoring your activity if you're not running VAL or (soon) League anyway, but I certainly understand wanting the extra assurance, and if you do this flow, Vanguard will be completely off until you reboot your PC.

2) I want to play League after doing non-League stuff and exiting Vanguard from system tray: But I need to restart PC manually OR i need to actually try to access League client, which will then prompt me to restart PC?

Also correct. If you try to launch League without rebooting, Riot Client will tell ya you gotta restart (exact same as you'd see in VALORANT today). Else, you just reboot and Vanguard will be initialized for when you're ready to play.

Sorry if this is redundant; Ive just never worked with kernel level restrictions before and wanna make sure I get it right.

Just because I’m curious, is there a specific reasoning for it always booting and there not being an optional toggle?

E.g. I’m fine with having to restart my pc to turn it on for a session of league or valorant - but I play them 2-3 days a week so I don’t want to have to manually disable it in startup options or right click close it in my drivers tray every boot.

There's some difficulties in implementing a toggle of that nature (I'm sure one of my more technical colleagues could speak to the effort involved, but an example that springs to mind is how to reliably tell a program to generally not launch on boot, except next time I reboot please do.")

I think if this is how you'd want to interact with Vanguard (which is great if it will help you feel authoritative about what you're comfortable with!), probably currently the avenue I'd suggest is to actually Uninstall Vanguard when you're not planning on playing LoL for a few days - it's also just a right click away (Right Click > More > Uninstall Vanguard > Confirm).

Then the next time you Launch LoL, Riot Client will prompt you to install Vanguard. Happily, the download + install is SUPER quick (my entire Riot Vanguard folder is 43 MB), so this flow actually wouldn't add much time to your get-in-game, as the reboot itself will probably be the longest part if you have broadband internet.

I recognize that likely feels more like a workaround than a solution, but it's what's currently available and I hope it helps you feel in control of things <3

Account Sharing is already against TOS; but there are plenty of like PC Cafes or valid reasons two people might play off a single computer; but it sounds like with Vanguard you’re going to be much more aggressive in using hardware ID’s to moderate player behavior.

We have an allowlisting system for PC Cafes, and also review tickets for players who state they may have gotten banned by one that could have not been on the list.

In terms of using your brothers computer that would be infected by cheats, it is a risk. We do look to have our Hardware bans be preventative rather than immediately banning the account, but if you were to play on it while cheats were injected, that could cause your account to be banned.

Much appreciated Riot Man! I'm more comfortable playing League with anti-cheat system now and it's even better that I'm afforded some control over Vanguard.

If there's anything you'd recommend we NOT do (aside from straight up cheating) while running League, please also let us know. I assume Vanguard looks at activities while the client/game is running, but sometimes between matches or during queues Id be doing work stuff on another screen. If my work stuff is something that can be captured by Vanguard while the game is running, then yea I'd have to stop doing that.

Regardless, thanks for taking the time to reassure my thoughts on this 🙏

While I'm sure the work you do is cool, unless you're creating cheats, or you're like loading libraries into League or something, Vanguard will be totally disinterested :)

In case you didn't get to the bottom of the article, Phillip touches on what kinds of data Vanguard looks at here:

Riot only collects what we need to run and secure our games. More data is just more risk for us, and we don't want anything except the bare minimum required to get the job done. Locally, Vanguard has system hooks to run its protections, but we're not shipping back your files or documents. Like most anti-malware and anti-cheat systems, we leverage a technique called "Signature Scanning," to determine if a series of bytes in memory matches a known cheating application. The results of these are only true or false (it was present or it wasn't), and we try to use this pattern for other checks too. Things like, "are you currently using a DMA device" or "did an application just try to submit input to the game" send mostly binary responses (though the latter includes the name of the process that did it).

For other detections, we need snapshots to scrutinize in post, and there are chances that these can contain PII. For example, we log the file path of every library loaded into League, and this could contain a user name (if it's in a user folder). We do things like this so that, after a cheat is discovered, we stand a chance to detect cheaters who have already used it (instead of only those moving forward). This type of data is only in "warm" storage for 14 days, and we will never use it for anything that is not cheat detection. I can't tell you every single thing Vanguard looks at, as cheaters would then know what areas to scrub the hardest. We need some obscurity to succeed, but I hope this makes our intentions with the data we do collect more clear.

I've had Vanguard since Valorant came out, and I have no qualms with it. As long as it behaves and lowers the amount of cheaters in a game I like by 1% I'm happy.

Also please don't stop here. Keep making smurfing/boosting/cheating/botting/account selling go away as much as possible. Competitive integrity in soloqueue has been at an all time low in the last 2-3 years. Thanks.

I think its pretty reasonable for people to have this aversion or skepticism. Some of it I personally think is a little hyperbolic or silly, but that's usually based off of misunderstanding either because of a lack of knowledge or bad faith actors. Even still that's understandable. This is quickly becoming the norm when it comes to modern anti cheat because it kind of has to be in order to be effective, that's just the reality. What worked on a game 10 years ago doesn't cut it anymore and it just does far too much damage to competitive integrity. Our ladders at the moment are compromised and we simply cannot manually keep up or iterate fast enough. That's just the cold hard truth.

People had the same aversion to Valorant and people are voicing the same things we saw then on League today. Majority of players won't and don't care, and while that's convenient for us here, I also don't think that's good. Everyone should approach every bit of software they allow onto their machines with a bit of skepticism and an evaluation of trust. So people who are saying "I'm gonna wait and see" are getting a lot of respect from me on this one, because that's what you should do. If you already trust us then that's great because you've already asked yourself that question and done that work.

If you're still not compatible with this then that's okay too. This is just going to be part of the bargain of playing League of Legends now. We want it to have the securest environment possible, this is what it takes at this day and age. If it changes then we'll make changes, but for now this is what we feel is the right call. If you're not cool with that then that's okay. Maybe you'll change your mind or come back in a time when don't have to run this kind of anti cheat.

Scope of scale is also a factor here with the size of League. Yeah, remapping like this shouldn't pose any issue that I know of. There are artificial input checks we have in VALORANT that can be blocked, but these aren't applicable to League of Legends, and these remappings aren't "artificial input", just input in a different form.

WSL2 should work fine.

In recent months, as many as 1 in 15 games globally has had a scripter or botter in it, but in some regions, this number is as high as 1 in 5.

This part REAAAAAAALLY needed to be specified if it is in normals, arams, pre-30 games, post 30 games (prolly under normals) or in ranked.

Also, not to mention this under the FAQ section

They used cheating software for another game, and Vanguard unfortunately picked it up.

Didn't they just say that when you don't play a riot game, Vanguard is just back there staying still (menacingly)? Paraphrasing, but that shouldn't be able to happen at all then, if that were true?

Like hell, I can 100% admit that I have used trainers in single player games, and I'm not even ashamed to admit it..and those are 100% cheats, but hell if I would be mad if I got banned by Vanguard for cheating in lets say Xcom (yes they have MP, but f**k, noone plays it for MP :P) or Civ, Total War, what be it.

None of these are clever, and there's no need to be impressed

About the DDOS part. I got to say, I'm actually KINDA impressed that someone has DDOS'd a team that belongs to one of the biggest companies down there for what is now soon to be 5 months. Now don't get me wrong, nothing impressive about DDOS'ing or ruining shit for anyone, but the fact that they haven't managed to get it under control is actually KINDA impressive, if it's type 1, 2 or 3.

Last but not least, if I read the earlier parts correct, or rather, understood it correct, if you haven't bought a legitimate windows key, you're shit out of luck, is that correct? Cus of the whole signature reading thingie bajing?

Now, I don't actively play LoL anymore (uninstalled about a month or two ago, but hadn't played it for prolly a year cus all my friends quit) but I for sure wouldn't buy a legitimate windows key just to play it either (IF I understood that correctly that is) Of course, all the more power to people who do, but yeah.

I'm obviosly glad cheaters and scripters get banned, but I really do wish there was less of a "intrusive" way to do it. But if the CoD cheating pandemic is anything to go by, there just doesn't seem to be, which is REALLY a shame.

This part REAAAAAAALLY needed to be specified if it is in normals, arams, pre-30 games, post 30 games (prolly under normals) or in ranked

It's ranked games actually

For the most part they should just all work like you would usually expect. I believe they'll need to make some changes but I'm not the expert on that information so I can't say for certain what exactly. Most of them have already made those changes as well it sounds like from what I'm told just now.

Nothing those do at least from what I'm told will trigger Vanguard.

i often play a game of CS and then insta go into tft or vice versa

would I have to restart my pc to play a game of league cause I have the other AC activated?

We don't anticipate any issues for you in this case. You shouldn't have to reboot your PC after playing CS in order to play League, the drivers can both co-exist.

but that's usually based off of misunderstanding either because of a lack of knowledge or bad faith actors.

I'm seeing parallels between this situation and the COVID vaccine lol

For example there's definitely been a noticeable trend of people claiming they were the victim of a false positive and attempting to create a narrative against Vanguard for League, only upon review to be discovered that they were blatantly cheating.

We're seeing it happen as weird and strange as it is. I just don't understand why people do that.

Sorry, quick confirmation:
My fiancée who has played valorant does not have TPM 2.0 (They aren't elligble to upgrade to Windows 11 (in the proper method) because of it.) did the requirement change recently in Valorant or is TPM 2.0 not required for League?

(We are starting to look at what we can do to upgrade their computer fairly quickly, given the 20 day turnaround if the Vanguard requirement goes live in 14.9 (May 1st))

Thanks!

TPM 2.0 will be required for Windows 11 machines to play League.
(Won't be required for previous versions of supported windows for now)

Hello there. I used AHK to press down key combinations, there is no logic involved. Is this bannable with Vanguard?

For example, I have my top 3 item slot actives bound to numpad 1-3. I will have Q trigger numpad1, W triggers numpad2, and E triggers numpad3. This way I can "attach" item arrived to certain spell keys.

I do this because I have RSI and struggled to hold the shift key or press further away keys than what is right below my hand.

https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/1c1kgrk/dev_vanguard_x_lol/kz4dl39/ K30 says it better here than I'd be able to. hope that answers what you're wonderin.

3 things quickly:

  1. Back to point 6: If, hypothetically, I use a trainer tool on a single player game. Would this be something seen by vanguard and risk a ban? Or will vanguard just whinge crash my LoL/Val game until I close it? Does Vanguard even see this if I don't have Valorant/LoL open?

  2. Does Vanguard run while the LoL client is open or only when a LoL game actually starts?

  3. Does Vanguard run while the Riot Client is running or only during the launch of above Riot games?

  1. If you're using a prohibited third party tool related to League in training mode, there's a good chance you'd still get actioned.

  2. It'll run when the respective clients of the games open, but not Riot Client.exe itself. So, if you are logged in on Riot Client, vgc.exe (which is the actual Vanguard program) launches when you click the Play button for League of Legends and the client pops up, and then closes once you close the client.

Yep, should be good. If you ever want to try anything yourself though to make sure, we are running in the PBE, if you have an account there.

To clarify point 1. I meant a non-Riot game. Lets for example here, say I'm using a trainer on Far-Cry 2; an old, single player game.

After a brief lookup of some I found online, seems like it would be ok. If it’s one that’s just a bundled CheatEngine or other similar products, you may encounter an issue. We’d look to close League during that interaction though, not to ban the individual account.

Can we get a breakdown of cheaters PER SERVER? Because Asia is a majority of players. China alone has 29 servers. So if the only statistic you give is is based on totals numbers then it seems flawed and dubious as if you were using Asia's higher cheating statistics to push Vanguard on the remaining players. I would love a graph with each server laid out and each amount of cheaters per rank on each server.

None of the numbers or graphs contain data from outside of riot regions. So no they wouldn't impact the numbers we shared here.

I'm on Windows 10 and I can't even play valorant because it ask for TPM 2.0 to be enable or to deactivate VBS and I will not deactivate VBS just to play a game. This mean vanguard for LOL is different?

Vanguard for LoL doesn’t have the current restriction system that VALORANT has for certain players.

If you’re on Windows 10 and you’re getting this message on VALORANT and you can’t support TPM 2.0, please write into Player Support. If you have already, you can message me your ticket number.

It's more important to reply to comments about "lulz cheater outsource mails to fiverr lul".

It has been responded to on other social medias ( https://x.com/deteccphilippe/status/1778502812403700045?s=46&t=iCQaeykeGHTksKoO4TeHHw ), but if you can prove this is happening, we do have a bug bounty program operated by HackerOne offering significant monetary sums to anyone who finds a vulnerability

Reports for exploits leveraging the anti-cheat kernel driver vgk.sys.

What does that have to do with your original claim that the "driver" is not calling home, and OP saying it is calling home even when the game is not running? That's obviously "a feature" that you installed, not an exploit

If vgk.sys is communicating externally when vgc.exe isn’t on, that’s not intended functionality. It would be eligible for a bug bounty.

That being said, it's a pretty niche case

PR is saying that people pirating software is a "pretty niche case".

Most pirated software does not require DevOverrideEnable, which is the largest collision I’ve seen here (and was referenced in the blog as well).
