Literally hacked tech. The icon actually grants you the signature. Every border since PROJECT 2016 has an exclusive icon with it. We can't sell the icon without the border.
When Worlds' skin prices went up, it was because their quality notably increased. However, some Special Edition borders seem to get more expensive each time, with their quality being relatively the same. It's also confusing why the Conqueror Varus bundle included its border for basically 1 RP, and then suddenly, the next batch of esports skins ramp that price up to 640 RP.
If this is done so that the biggest fans have more ways to show off their fandom and contribute back to the team, why not give fans more content, rather than just more expensive content? Why not have SSG themed emotes and ward skins in addition to everything else?
If the bundle specific summoner icons can't be sold separately because they unlock the special border, why not have another different set of icons for fans to buy?
I definitely don't think making borders increasingly expensive is the way to go when your main objetive is to give fans MORE WAYS to support their favorite teams, not more expensive ways.
You're right. This would be better with additional icons and emotes. The reason we don't have those is because we already sold them during Worlds last year, so we figured fans had that opportunity already. But I guess it does feel weird that we don't have those options next to each other. Maybe it was a mistake to test this product without having the additional options at the same time.
Regardless, you should see options more like what you're describing during Worlds this year. Does that help?
The reality -- and you do know this -- is that players aren't supporting the team. They're buying a skin for their favourite champion, and they want the border that goes along with that. The signatures are a nice tough, but most players do not actually think too much about the players.
They're buying it for the champion. You know this, and you're taking advantage of it. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
If I'm understanding what you're saying here correctly, it's that you believe Taliyah mains will largely want Crown's signature on their loading screen card even though they don't give a sh*t about Crown? But they want it because regardless it's a Taliyah thing? I'm happy to continue the dialogue but I want to make sure I'm understanding your perspective correctly.
Yeah, see the other comments posted by others in result to this one. People at large simply don't actually care that much about the players; it's a nice side-benefit that they get to support a player, but it doesn't sway people. What people want is a deeper attachment to their champion, not to connect themselves arbitrarily to a person that is probably much richer than us. They just won Worlds.
Continue to support the players, but the World champion skins (for many players) are just ways to support their favourite champions. I used Taliyah as an example because this is her first content since she was released two years ago -- the Taliyah Mains Discord is filled with people upset because the icon and the border are too expensive to justify the price, and the border is a way of saying, Hey! I really like this champion!
I agree that 'buying early' (as was done with Star Guardian) doesn't work here, because the skins leave the store quite early, but you should know skins deepen player attachment to their champion. They want the border because it looks cool on their favourite champion. Crown's signature is irrelevant.
Players also want the icon, because it's their only way to get content for Taliyah. I don't doubt there will be another Taliyah skin for players to grab sometime in the next year, but tying the icon to the border = not worth it.
I don't know how you can justify, internally, charging 890 RP for a cropped image from the splash art and the border. You must see that more players want the icon than the border because it's a more direct way to personalise their champion experience. That's what skins do.
Looking at it cynically, they make players feel cool and like they're exploring a different version of their character. I would've been okay with the pricing if:
- The icons weren't just cropped versions of the splash arts
- They were separated from the border
- The whole thing wasn't priced over 20% higher than a legendary skin with a full VO.
- First non-launch skins were accounted for in more ways than simply increasing availability slightly.
- Bundles move back to offering a discount for buying all content, not overcharging for the bundle.
I get it. You want to support the players. But this doesn't look like it supports the players on our end. It's just ways to pressure regular players to buy more money; it's the same reason they're time-limited (or are they time-limited to provide a sense of achievement and pride for players, and for the biggest fans to show off their fandom?)
I'd love to have this dialogue with you over voice - I kinda hate the Reddit comment back and forth. What you're saying makes a ton of sense. I've typed and re-typed responses multiple times but trying to convey every nuance I want to, making sense, and not writing a novel never all seem to come together in a single iteration. Any chance you want to hop on discord or something? I'd actually love to get deeper into your perspectives. If not that's cool - I can try to respond here.
I can do that, yeah. It's 2:45am here though (I'm in the UK), and I'm about to hit the sack. If you want to add me on Discord, I'll accept tomorrow and we can have a chat whenever you're free, at work/after work. Tag is ImaginesTigers#6622.
Cool of you to do this.
Added. More than happy to chat; I really just want to learn. I really appreciate the time and thoughtfulness you've put into your responses thus far, and I'm super interested to continue the conversation. I'll probably try to ping you tomorrow if we can make that work.
Ready when you are!
I'm on.
