Lets cut to the chase, Janna is old. If I recall correctly, she was the first champion added to the game after the original 40. In that time, she hasn't aged well. Rather than writing a 7 paragraph post on why she needs an Ezreal/Morgana level VgU, which she does, I'm going to focus on a singular aspect that comes along with a champion update; the new voice lines. As somebody who thoroughly enjoys the lore, with every new champion update or release, I can't wait to see their interactions and the things they say, I still rewatch Swain's updated VO from time to time, even though it's nearly 2 years old.

With Janna, the key details about her are that she's a wind elemental, she's worshipped as a goddess in Zaun and in Piltover to some degree, and she's a being of compassion, quite literally brought to life by prayer. Using this, I was able to come up with some concept voice lines, hoping to capture her essence, so to speak. I'm hoping to display her spiritual, protector nature, without it coming across as to serious, while also hoping to include some of her more playful, casual side, as displayed in her color story "Deep Breath" which I highly recommend everybody to read. I'm focusing more on specific lines that are towards other champions rather than the general basic lines, such as movement and attacking lines.

Pick: "I'll be watching over you."

Ban: "Afraid of a little wind?"

First Move:

"Give me your hope, and I'll give you the winds."

"The merciless will be blown away." laughs "Literally."

"Stay strong, the winds are at our backs."

First move with Urgot on enemy team. "The storm will have no mercy for you, Urgot, just as you had no mercy for the weak."

First move with Singed on enemy team. "Singed is near, even my winds can't blow away his foulness."

First move with Viktor on enemy team. "It's not to late for him, he can still change."

First move with Viktor on ally team. "Viktor, I saw you as a child, I saw the wonderful things you hoped to do. How you believed you could make Zaun better."

Jokes:

Personally, I think her current jokes are to iconic to change, and I also couldn't come up with any. Also, for the love of god keep her current laughs, they're so pure and genuine sounding and I'd be hurt if they were actually replaced.

Taunts:

"Bend with the wind, or be broken by it." This is actually a quote that's been used in her older lore, it's so good and it always disappointed me that it never made it in the game.

"I've had people pray for me to take you down."

Encounters:

Enemy Viktor "You aren't perfecting them, Viktor, you're taking away their humanity."

Ally Viktor "You cover yourself in metal, yet all I see is a man."

Enemy Urgot "I heard their prayers, their cries, from the torment you inflicted."

Enemy Singed "All the abominations you've created, but the only monster I see is you."

Ekko "I remember when you were just a child." sighs "That seems so long ago."

Jinx "It wasn't your fault your, Jinx."

Blitzcrank "For something made of metal, you're awfully soft."

Mundo "Your insanity is the only thing that saves you, Mundo."

Yasuo "giggles But I'm not by your side." A reference to Yasuo's line, "Death is like the wind, always by my side."

Warwick "I should have done more for you, Warwick."

Toward Piltovan champions "Do you know how many die just below your feet?"/ "They choke and suffer for your wants."/ "Pray that Zaun doesn't come for revenge, I've seen their anger."

Killing an Enemy:

Viktor "I'm sorry, Viktor."/ "You can't escape your own humanity."

Urgot "You didn't make them stronger, you made them desperate."/ "Cruelty begets cruelty, Urgot."

Singed "You were beyond redemption, Singed."

Can be used against Mundo, Singed, Urgot "Zaun is better off without you."

"You gave me no other choice."

"The winds will carry you."

"Go in peace."

Movement in the River:

"Reminds me of the ocean."

"Watching over waves was so much easier than people."

"takes a deep breath Fresh air."

Movement:

"For serenity."

"So much gone to waste, I must help."

"To many innocents have been lost, no more."

"They reach for something greater, and I will protect them."

"Humans are like the wind, capricious, and fickle."

"Hope is a breeze, small, yet constantly growing till it becomes a tempest, halted by no one."

"Even the smallest act of compassion can change the hardest of hearts."

"Who will I help today?"

"A little faith will go a long way."

"sighs So free."

"Nobody can take your hope."

"Gales always have the deepest secrets."

Attacking:

"This isn't my purpose."

"I don't want to do this."

"Don't make me hurt you, please."

"I only wanted to help."

"You do this to yourself."

"Gales upon you."

"Breathless."

When casting E:

"It's going to be okay."

"Don't worry, I'm here."

"I'm watching over you."

"Soft winds."

When casting R:

"Storm's fury unleashed!"

"Scatter the cruel!"

"Not under my watch!"

"Tempest protect you!"

Well, that's everything I come up with. Side note, as a Janna main, I'm incredibly satisfied with her current voice actor, Erin Fitzgerald, and if possible, I beg Riot to get her again when they do update Janna. If not possible, I hope they keep her voice as close to Erin's as possible, soft, gentle, quiet, not loud or annoying.

Nice job! Champ/Skins writer here. I like your Encounters and how you hint at Janna having been around long enough to know tidbits about other champs' backstories. If you're looking for feedback, one thing we writers tell ourselves is to go line by line and cover up the name (in this case Janna) and ask yourself, could another champ say this line? If so, it's good to rewrite it to make it more unique to them. For example, I can see Soraka saying "This isn't my purpose" while attacking but I can only really see Janna saying "Tempest protect you!" as she ults (so great line there!)

Hey there,

I’m a bit of a writer myself, mainly doing freelance gaming journalism here and there and a lot of articles about other random stuff. I’d love to break into writing for video games.

Your job seems like an awesome job. Any advice to break into the field? The wheels of mind numbing article writing never seem like they’re gonna stop!

I'd say the best thing is to make/work on a game! Be it a grad school project or an indie game. Find likeminded people in the gaming space and work on the narrative. And if that doesn't work, you can also try to work at a game studio first doing whatever and then move into writing. I started out as a production coordinator on a documentaries team at Riot before becoming a narrative writer. Good luck!

Hi! Sorry to bother you. I just wanted to ask, as I'm working on a new Xerath VO, for fun, after seeing your message, I recognized my VO is quite similar to Mordekaiser's. I think they have very similar goals that to differ them, you need to keep going deeper and analyze their character. Do you think it would be wrong for Xerath to have many quotes that could be also said by Mordekaiser?

Here the move quotes:

  • Mortals are unworthy of ruling, that is why I have come to take everything.
  • This sarcophagus cannot stand against my perfection for long.
  • Mercy is a kindness only for those deserve it.
  • Celestial firmament is only one of many to submit to my power.
  • Show loyalty and I carry you to greatness.
  • You should bow to no one. I am no one.
  • I shall raise Shurima like a phoenix with my own hands.
  • Gates of paradise shall swing open to those who show their loyalty.
  • I shall sear my name into eternity, that even the heavens may scream it.
  • True magic is beyond the reach of mortals, but I am no mere mortal.
  • The unfaithful will be the pyre upon which my empire is built.
  • Their domains are just a part of greater design.

Hey! This a great start! What I would suggest you do is take a hard look at each line and see what specifically could be changed to make it a "Xerath line." For example, "I shall raise Shurima like a phoenix with my own hands." is a evocative line and definitely not Mordekaiser, but I can still see that being said by Azir. What is Xerath's motivation? Well, for one, he hates Azir and wants to end his bloodline, so my edit on this line would be something along the lines of "With my unbound hands, I shall end the bloodline that brought Shurima to ruin." In here, "unbound" references Xerath's past as a slave and also touches on his hatred of his former friend Azir and his dynastic rule. I hope that helps!

I love that quote you have made. :) That's really helpful. But I have a question... Should all the quotes that champions say be unique to them? Like, can't there be any quote that can be said by multiple champions? Let's go from one of quotes of Mordekaiser:

  • Lives are temporary, I stand eternal.

If you ask me, this can be said by Xerath too.

I have the feeling that if I try too hard to make every quote obviously and specifically unique to Xerath, it might look very amateur.

  • I shall bring a new era of mortals united under my divine presence, all grateful to their true god. (long move quote)

This is one of his quotes. Not gonna lie, that sounds very Azir like, but it is a problem I can fix with your method.

But when you have this:

  • A spark, thrilled to be snuffed out. (Attack quote)

Trying to make it unique for Xerath might butcher the poetic intention under it.

So... should I focus on quotes that may clash with main goals of other champions, make them more specific to Xerath, and let others that are more general as they are?

Thanks a lot by the way, your suggestion is incredibly valuable and very helpful, I am definitely gonna listen it. I plan to share it in reddit or maybe in boards when it is finished, I hope you see it!

Not every single quote has to be that specific for the reasons you pointed out. Especially in a game as fast paced as League, sometimes you just don't have enough room to make every line tattoo-worthy, but what we strive for is to have enough of those in there that when you play a game and the VO lines fire randomly, you get the sense that this is a character with clear and distinct motivations.
