Hello everyone!

Similar to the previous VFX updates we’ve made in the past (Ziggs, Zilean, Malzahar, etc), we're working on updates to the Visual Effects (VFX) of champions whose spell effects are in need of some love. Our aim is to get their VFXs to current League standards and improve gameplay clarity. This time, it's Syndra's turn, for 11.21's PBE Patch! I worked on this particular VFX Update with the great Riot Temcampy!

Just like all the previous ones, and since these are smaller updates geared toward sprucing up some of the oldest members of the roster, they aren't in the same prioritization conversation as to how we decide who gets a VGU (where we take model, gameplay, and thematic into account too!): they do not affect any other timeline, and are simply dev passion projects.

Here's a video preview of the changes. As usual, the more recent the skins are, the less changes they are getting. Her most recent skins only received very minimal tweaks (or not at all) and are not included in the video.

Is it within the scope of a visual update to tie her orbiting spheres with her R availability? Like Ekko's trail and many other more modern kits, Syndra's Ultimate uses those spheres, but she has them at the beginning of the game and while R is on CD too.

As much as I'd personally love that, it sadly isn't within scope. That'd require quite a refactoring. :(

Sadly we are not allowed to use pure black for VFXs. :(

I can see if I can tone down the intensity of the purples a bit, though.

Sadly we can't really use pure blacks in VFXs, especially for VFXs that last such a long time. I will however try to tone down the overwhelming purple in her level 5 spells!

Honestly it looks pretty dope.

There is only one thing I find iffy; on her E, after the initial wave remains a stiff triangle. I get that the aftereffect adds flavor but it doesn't feel really good to see. Might I suggest replacing it with some cracks on the ground? Adds some weight to the spell with the idea of power.

I don't know if anyone else shares this thought tho so this may be an unpopular take! Other than that, great job really!

Eyo! Yea I'm toning down the ground effect for E, it was indeed a bit too strong. :)

Because now she has three different types of Qs, rank 1-4 light purple, rank 5 dark purple, but the ones surrounding her are her old ones but they change to the maxed version when her Q or R is maxed?

If the orbs match her R, then why do they not match her Q until it changes to the new one? its much darker than her ability that goes on the ground

I just tested, and they only change once R is maxed. They do refresh when you max Q, but they stay the same (I'm not sure why they refresh though).

For base Syndra I do feel like it should be more black as others have pointed out, but maybe you could keep the current 'purple' vfx for her Queen of Diamonds skin? I know that it is not supposed to have different vfx from base considering its price but I personally never liked how dark spheres looked with her design so I think the current purple base vfx could work really well with this particular skin. (Maybe even making the spheres that are flying around her look the same as those when she uses Q since they kinda look like they're made of glass at the moment which would be super cool for this particular skin since she is 'The queen of diamonds')

I also have a complaint about Atlantean Syndra. It doesn't have to do with your update, your update is literally amazing and Atlantean shall now be my favorite, but there's been this weird bug for years now where the spheres look purple with medium video settings or lower and only really look blue and clean if it's set to highest but for my PC it looked purple even when I turned the settings to highest. I don't think this is supposed to be happening so I'm assuming it's a bug and hopefully it will be fixed when this update comes to live servers :)

  2. The darkness of Base Syndra's spheres. They look too dull and faded (low contrast, low saturation). Side by side the base spheres seem so much more powerful and intimidating than the new version. As a former Syndra main I don't feel too fond towards the new base sphere design. They shouldn't just look better at level 5 and too faded before then.
