Hello everyone! I'm Riot Koyuncu, one of the QA Engineers on Champions team and QA owner for Vex.

Vex is trudging her way onto PBE, and is now currently enabled and available to play! This is personally one of my favorite champion projects that I've worked on, and I want to hear your player feedback before she launches in two weeks. We've got about a week before we have to lock any proposed changes for her release, so I'll be monitoring common themes in this thread to share back with the team for possible adjustments.

If you encounter any in-game bugs while playing Vex, please let us know by heading over to our Bug Reporting Tool and providing any information on the issue. Providing repro steps or a video clip are incredibly helpful at debugging.

9/8: It looks like Vex and her launch skin aren't in the PBE store. They hopefully should appear for the next deploy tomorrow, but you should be able to play her as she's part of the free rotation.

9/9: Vex her Dawnbringer skin should now be acquirable in the PBE store! Thank you for your patience.

9/9: We've made some texture adjustments to Dawnbringer Vex that should in for tomorrow's PBE build (https://imgur.com/a/6gDFQ9r). Thanks for the constructive feedback!

9/10: The Vex team had a discussion about PBE feedback to brighten up the sleeves of Dawnbringer's model. We concluded that we prefer the way it currently look considering we want to keep them as a tertiary read to her hair and ears. I know that this will come as a disappointment to some, but I don't anticipate we will make any changes here at the moment.

9/13: We've added wing VFX to the back of Dawnbringer's in-game model so that it matches the Splash art. (https://imgur.com/a/bNWJQUh). Thanks for calling that out - should be in on the next deploy! As much as players and I would like to see Vex's dance repeat, the reality is that it's a non-trivial amount of work to create a nice loop with how difficult it can be to animate Shadow. The team made the call to keep it as is for her release and have her animator prioritize working on upcoming content.

9/14: The team liked the idea of having Shadow change colors based on the chroma, so we got that in for today's PBE deploy (https://imgur.com/a/BUsRsT6). Hope you like them!

9/15: We've officially cut the branch and have finalized any Vex changes for 11.19. Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Shoutouts to /r/vexmains for the Release skin megathread. Vex's character artist will be doing some adjustments to the in-game model so that the colors are closer to the splash art and skinline.

I'm not sure if this is intentional, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Currently, Shadow will display over terrain that Vex walks around, even if it should be behind it. For example: if Vex hugs the botside wall, Shadow's animations clip around the terrain. Here's a picture for reference. This interaction seems odd to me, since Shadow realistically should be "underneath" the boulder in the picture and not over it.

It's not ideal, but it's intended that Shadow renders flat over terrain - Technical limitations prevented us from having the Shadow distort when near walls like a real life shadow would, and we decided it would be better for gameplay clarity if Shadow was always visible.

First impressions after playing her twice, (once against bots and once against people):

  • LOVE that her basic attack windup/speed feels very snappy and clean for a mage! A lot of mage basics make last hitting without spells feel awful, but Vex's are clean enough that I actually WANT to see how Lich Bane feels!
  • The unique dual Q shape and speed felt like they're going to take a little getting used to, but I saw SOME self-improvement on my timing and angles even after a single game, so I'm guessing the mastery curve on that is pretty spot-on.
  • The size difference between a short range E and a long range one felt deceptively similar; The max range area is more than big enough for sure, but the min size also felt surprisingly large?
  • Her fear procs are short duration, but against a team with a lot of dashes/mobility they felt RIDICULOUSLY frequent... not that I'm complaining! I hate the mobility creep in the game almost as much as Vex apparently does, but if there's anything other than damage/scaling tuning here that feels first blush busted it's the passive fear frequency.
  • Speaking of damage/scaling; couldn't really get a feel for the numbers based on such a small sample size and the whacky PBE matchmaking... Trying to support could have felt underwhelming because her base damages are tuned for the mid lane or because the 2v2 was a silver vs diamond coin flip (as is pretty common/usual for PBE)

I'm glad to hear you liked how snappy her basic attacks feel - Vex's attack against a target marked by her passive is one of my favorites.

I really like the skin, I hope the changes will really improve the skin. One thing I'm curious about is, why are her auto attacks exactly the same as in her base model? Is it just bugged right now? Really hoping that the skin gets some unique ones.

It's a bug, but should be fixed on PBE right now. Glad you like the skin!

First of all some explaining for people who don't know, there are 3 parts of Vex's passive "Gloom 'n Doom."

Gloom; the mark irrelevent.

Doom; Vex's next basic ability interrupts dashes and fears enemies.

Impending Doom; It's what "Doom" is called when on cooldown.

I was using practice tool trying out the new champion Vex, when I try out a new champion I always just go ham on dummies while having Auto-Refresh Cooldowns on, then I noticed something strange, all my abilities came of cooldown (CD), as you expect, Q, W, E, R and of course the passive yet her abilities didn't fear the dummies and Vex's basic ability icons weren't 'green.'

So I watched the replay, and according to the replay the abilities were concidered powered up from her passive, so the icons were green yet when Vex used her abilities they appeared purple.

Then I finally saw what caused it, "Impending Doom" or "Doom" has a diffrent cooldown than her "Gloom 'n doom" as shown here: https://twitter.com/i/status/1436030675883368453

You can see bottom left above her icon that "Doom"/"Impending Doom" is still on CD while "Gloom 'n Doom" isn't. Also the abilty icons stayed powered up/green for the whole game after that while I didn't have "Auto-Refresh Cooldowns" on: https://twitter.com/i/status/1436037036880896006

I'm not sure if the "Doom" part being on CD is a bug but atleast the basic ability icons showing as green/powered up basic ability icons (so with her passive on it) is a bug.

Then there is another thing I'd like to discuss.

When Vex uses passive E and it hits 4 champions, it puts a mark (Gloom) on them while also fearing the 4 champions, then you press Q to blow up the Gloomed champions which gives you 100% CDR on Vex's passive (25% per champion) you instantly get both parts ("Gloom 'n Doom" and "Doom") of the passive back to where you can press W and fear all of them again. So why is it that if "Gloom 'n Doom" and "Doom" reset normally I can't use the passive immidiantly it takes another second to process "Doom" is up as you can see here:https://twitter.com/i/status/1436037036880896006

I noticed it in draft too, I thought my passive was ready cause I saw my "Gloom 'n Doom" being off CD so I used Q and it didn't fear the champion.And in that one second Vex can use 2 abilities that should've been fearing the enemies.

P.s: This is my first bug report and first post on this subreddit, hope there aren't too many flaws in it, sorry for bad quality of the twitter vids, hope this wasn't too painful to read ~~! Also I posted this on r/vexmains before but thought I should post it here too.

Thank you for the detailed report! We're planning on doing some rescripting to Vex's Passive aimed for Patch 11.20 which will hopefully resolve these bugs you discovered.

Good callout! The Illustration team will be making a small adjustment to zoom out the icon - should it be on the next PBE build.

Whenever Vex fears a champion or minion they no longer get slowed, instead they move away rather quickly, the passive says that depending on how far the champion or minion hit is the more/less they get slowed but it almost seems like they get a speed buff instead . (This is only on Vex I've tried every champion that has a fear but they don't bug out like this, atleast to my knowledge.)

Edit: While typing this u/xAsami just posted the bug here, so consider this furthering the bugreport with extra infortmation.

We've got a fix coming in for the next PBE deploy. That block of logic got accidentally removed last night when implementing her Eternals.

Maybe the wings particles wuold be enough for the last point tho, I love how visible and shiny they are in the icon

It's currently undecided - I think the chromas using the same VFX as her parent skin looks fine, but the Chroma team will discuss if they will make any changes here. There's no time to get something in for 11.19, so it'll be for the patch after if they do decide to adjust it.

It would give the same cute effect it has when the passive is down, now you barely see them for most part of the game otherwise

Thanks for the feedback - The current plan is to keep the passive VFX the way it currently looks like for her release, but we're open to changes post-release if they affect gameplay clarity in some way.

As for the wings, the Chroma team is discussing whether they'll make a color adjustment for 11.20.
