Context:

I come on this sub & only see people hate on this game & I honestly really like it & feel like it's gotten better over the years & wanted to post something positive

Toxicity Changes:

  • Less people trying to force dodges or flame pre-game since they don't like a teammate's win rate (can't google their stats to yell at them).
  • Post game lobby chat is opt in so I don't have to see the 30 irate messages from the guy I muted when I load in
  • Yeah it's still toxic, but 10 years ago this was an absolute cesspool
    • Imo I remember ~1/3 games having some intentionally attempting to lose after things didn't go their way, now it happens but it's (for me at least) not all that common.
    • Actual hate speech and personal level harassment (i.e. "You're fat & live in a basement" stuff) is way down as well
    • Maybe the player base just got older and has mellowed out a bit or people are actually getting banned/restricted

Gameplay Changes:

  • A few years back they made changes to help games end faster - I really like this as I age & have less time to play
  • Tower plates made winning lane & not getting kills feel more rewarding
  • Herald made top side a litte more relevant
  • Seasons 1 & 2 support was a 0 income ward bot, now you have some agency
  • Passive gold & come back experience - Earlier seasons we're way more snowbally, one player literally would often have more than 2x gold the next guy & 4 levels.

Monetization:

  • Free to download, free to play
  • Monetization (almost) entirely cosmetic optional purchases
  • New content not paywalled
  • Very minor pay to win (unlock champs faster), but honestly not bad compared to many companies

Content:

  • TFT, Duels, ARAM, Clash, Spectator, Bots, Arena, URF, 3v3s, etc.
  • All free
  • Regular balance changes to keep it fresh (even if we sometimes disagree)
  • I know there's some recent Esports heat Riot has taken, but this game did a lot for Esports as a whole - Riot is still bleeding money to run unprofitable leagues that will realistically not regain profitability.

Closing:

  • This game is a 13 years old & probably slowly lose some players over time as the younger generation will likely prefer newer games (play/watch less) & that's ok
  • I feel like sh*tting on the Riot team & blaming the decline of a 13 year old game entirely on this or that balance change is just unproductive & mean spirited
  • I feel like the company balanced/maintained/monetized this game in a pretty good faith manner
  • While I don't get as much time to play now as I used to & don't reach the same rank as I used to, I feel like I'm having more fun playing now then I ever did.

TLDR:

Despite what often appears to be the census on this Subreddit, I think this is a great game that's a lot of fun.
