Honestly I'd rather just wait for her skillsets: so much is happening yet again that I have no idea whats going on
Though I personally like wall interactions

Would love to hear this feedback fleshed out a bit. We are always iterating on how we making these trailers and if you feel like we're not representing the character well I'd love to hear it!
For context, we tend to focus on the champion's fantasy in these trailers. We're not trying to teach the kit 1 to 1 but trying to show the intended fantasy of the character. Did you also feel that you couldn't understand the character for Yuumi? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZWEV3bACZo
Thanks for the feedback :)
I think it's the lack of distinction that it's the different environments that change her abilities. Although I do think that the trailer did a really good job of providing intrigue to the champion. I think if you had shown her w in action a bit more clearly it would have helped display that it's an act of player choice with the ring/passive rather then assuming it's based on the location of the champion.
That's great feedback. It's tough to communicate it without showing the mouse cursor over the part of the map you're clicking on, but we may have been able to find a more creative way to solve that. Thanks for the feedback!
Honestly, there are so many dashes on so many abilities nowadays that we can't discern which is which (especially without seeing the abilities page first). I had to do a few takes on the Ezreal clip to see that she W'd back over the wall. In this particular case, the CD on the dashes being so short doesn't help either, and her Q and R look pretty similar to me, to the point I am starting to get pretty confused and kinda scared of how that'll translate to live.
Btw, I thought the eagle view was cool, but it made me kind of dizzy, and the scenario changing like that distracted me from the action (even if it made sense thematically).
Gotcha. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the feedback!
I'm just glad you show champion abilities with the video - Evelynn was a real mystery, especially for her ult.
That's interesting. Sometimes we try to go more for tone/theme and less showing exactly what she does. I personally love the Evelynn trailer because of how clearly it represents WHO Evelynn is even though WHAT she does is a little more vague.
Totally fair feedback though. Always a tough balance.
i mean i think its like you said, the trailers focus on the theme of the champion rather the the gameplay which is pretty obvious if you look at the yuumi one since she keeps teleporting around the map since that's true to her lore but not game play. I just think that since you're releasing these trailers before we know how the champions actually works its super easy for the community to overreact, good example is the zoe trailer, without knowing her kit its easy to assume that she can for all you know always have 3 flashes. i can see why it'd be problematic to release the trailers after the ability unveil but i also think that people see them as- or want them to be a showcase of what the new champion looks like when played in action, which is why having it be a thematic trailer is a bit odd to begin with.
Interesting take on it. I can definitely see where you're coming from. I also love your example of the Zoe trailer, because clearly once she was fully released the community got to see how wrong their overreaction was /s :P
Thanks for the feedback!
Trailers without knowing the kit always look confusing. I remember that being the case for Pyke and Xayah/Rakan, never mind Irelia and Akali.
But did it make you HYPE!? Or is it just confusion? Not knowing exactly what is going on can be kinda fun sometimes, no?
"what is an element" ?
no where is explained what is ment with Element. is it only in range of the circle? do you keep the water element in the river only? do you need to recast it to change it while in brush?
it's a new keyword but no explanation on it
That's fair. Here are some answers:
What is an 'element': That's deep. Who really know what anything is when you really think about it.
Is it only in range of the circle: So pretty much if your screen is centered on the champion anywhere on your screen is reachable with your W. You will always dash the short distance but the selection range is quite large. You hover over any of the 3 elements (Rock, grass, or water) and press W and you will dash towards that element and gain it.
Do you keep the water element in the river only: Nope. You get it everywhere. You just have to be near the water to gain it initially.
Do you need to recast it to change it while in brush: Yes, you will hold your element till you use it. Once your use it it is gone and you will need to select another one.
Hope that helps!
Just a personal opinion, but I loved the Jayce + Caitlyn sequences.
Jayce cuts were especially crisp since there is the traditional pov where you can see the situation, then cut into those zoom shots. Absolutely no confusion in what is happening.
The part I hated was the Camille sequence. The environment cutting might seem slick but really confused me in what was going on. The topdown view also was a bit foreign, and I had no clue what was going on during the entire thing other than 2 things moving around.
Got it! Thanks for that feedback!
What I felt watching this vid was this: "So this chick, who sound like a spoiled brat, basically come in and own the battlefield in a ever-changing elemental dance."
In my opinion, if you guys wanted to make an "elemental dancer assassin" you've nailed it, because the way she "dances" is even better than Irelia and Fiora, looks far more dynamic and "artistic". I really hope this sensations are in the also gameplay, because if not it would be a big disappointment.
I don't know how close my perception of her is, but I like what I'm seeing.
Hell yeah! That's what we were going for! Glad you felt like we hit it.
Yuumi's was on point. So was Neeko's. Qiyana's trailer is harder to understand because her kit is more complex than the other two, specially with two dashes. But I do understand what's happening on her trailer after knowing what her abilities are.
Sweet, thanks for the feedback!
Try making shit glow, shit glowing always works
I think I explained myself poorly - I mean that having a champion ability reveal page with the video itself is helpful. I think tone/theme is accurately conveyed in this video, mostly because of the VO lines.
Got it! Thanks for the clarification!
Not OP but before knowing her abilities it was super confusing just because of how low her dash cooldowns are. I had no idea what I was looking at the first time I watched it. I read the abilities and rewatched and it made a lot more sense. Hype? For an AD assassin with that much mobility? I’m a support main friend, this is my nightmare! Lol her design is awesome though for sure.
Hahaha that's fair. I am a Rakan support main and also a mid assassin player. The internal turmoil we go through...
Yuumi looks like it had way more time to flesh out and did a better job with her audio queues that she was clearly attaching to the allies and helping them out - using her dialogue to provide emphasis.
For Qiyana, the flexibility of her kit made it look like she had tons of abilities and that none of it had to do with player choice. The top down camera angle in particular (at 0:50) did more to confuse me then it did to provide context.
In your other comment you mention it's hard to communicate the choices without the mouse cursor, but I feel dialogue could have been used more effectively to convey it. Like if you used simple phrases such as "Wall!" before showing off that skill type, "Grass" for that section, "Water!" for the last, it would have gone a long way in helping describe that she is adapting to the environment available to her. Yuumi's stuff such as "Shield!", "Heal!" helped a lot, plus the dialogue with the allies of "Go faster, faster!" really helped emphasis that she was reliant on them, which became more evident when her kit was released.
Hope this helps!
Sweet. Thanks for the thorough feedback! I really appreciate it!
Np!
Just want to say in terms of expressing fantasy, the caitlyn + herald clips were the best. Shows clearly what can be possible without overloading on too much extraneous information.
If you could sate my curiosity, are all clips used during champion trailers such as these all organically taken from playtests? Is there ever a decision to stage/choreograph specific clips to better demonstrate something?
Pretty much none of it for trailer's is taken from actual playtests. A lot of what we do for trailers is staging and choreography, but hopefully if we do it right you will never notice.
I think more LoL universe pages describing her background would help. I don't get the whole tan white hair look, but overall I like her design.
I think a cooler design could have been pulled from the new Dancers in FFXIV where you have multiple Chakram and she could toss a Chakram at a location, hold her W for up to a second and then she would dash to it and pick it up.
That being said, I think you guys did great stylistically to not make it feel like you were reusing Sivir's key. My one big gripe is that she doesn't, at the moment, feel like a Legend that the other characters do. All the other characters feel like they've carved out their own places in Runeterran history, but not much about her design tells me much more than that she could be an elementalist warrior from a jungle tribe.
Got it. Thanks for the feedback!
It's always hard to understand clips when you don't know the full context. Like, you understand that she has a dash, stealth, damage, explosion and stun, but that's about it, you don't know how to get those things, what other factors her abilities have, which ability does what, etc. The only thing I can say is maybe they should have an indicator for what button they're pressing like on the Ezreal spotlight (who didn't really need it since everyone who plays this game knows what he does).
That's interesting. We try not to overload people with information because if we're trying to teach you this is Q/W/E/R it makes it hard to just focus on what is happening.
When we think about these trailers we normally have some key goals we're trying to hit. "show off her mobility", "Make sure people understand she has multiple different elements", or "she's very c*cky and full of herself but also insanely skilled". So it's not as important to us that you understand what her Q is, more than you understand generally what she does and who she is.
So with that context, would you say our goals are incorrect or do you feel we're not hitting them?
Not enough darude sandstorm
I'm pretty sure she'd be head banging to Silver Scrapes, thank you very much.
I think you shouldn’t use flash in these trailers, especially when the champ is dashing and doing a lot of stuff. She does a lot in a short amount of time, so when she flashes I have to ask if that was a flash or an ability, which may cause me to miss the next action.
Hmm interesting. It's definitely something we can consider. Thanks for the feedback!
The style is normally pretty good, quick and clean showcase of a champions skills. This champion however seems a bit more convoluted than just ability 1 2 and 3, with different effects based on the envoirement. I think she just suffers from doing too many context based things to properly explain in the current video format. Its too dynamic, too fast to figure out whats actually going on with the different elements, and it feels difficult to grasp what shes actually doing. I think you would either have to bite the bullet and make a slower, more thorough video, or just live with this as not really conveying what the champion does to players.
That's a fair analysis. I think it's clear which of those two we chose :)
imo there could've been like a shot of just w-ing the respective environment before showing off the 1v1 with the respective element
Like before the 1v1 with the cait showing off her stealth q just a shot of her wing to a bush before initiating the fight?
Yeah. Hard part is that Wing resets the Q cooldown. So if you want to get Two Qs off quickly you have to already have an element primed.
Still fair feedback. Definitely something we can keep in mind for the future.
What role was she designed for?
Normally designers just make things like an AD assassin. Specific roles aren't always forced. Believe she'll fit in mid and top though.
I love the Yuumi trailer, it's extremely well done. It shows off her personality and her kit at the same time.
Qiyana's does nothing for me. I have no idea what her personality or lore is ("jungle something something") and I have no idea what her abilities do. All I can really see is something dashing around my screen. Maybe I just have bad eyes, but I have trouble following her around without health bar and so zoomed out.
It does get across the idea that she is associated with elements of some kind, but it's hard to tell what exactly it means or what they are.
Got it! Thanks for the feedback!
About 70-20-10 for hype, confusion and apprehension. Akali is still fresh.
haha fair! Thanks!
I'd say it's good to make use of the replayability factor of YouTube videos to convey as much information as possible without it being overbearing. By having a small overlay that shows which button she pressed, people can have a better understanding, and if they want to pay attention to what she does and who she is, they could simply watch the video again focusing on the visuals. The Ezreal video that I mentioned (https://youtu.be/3EElFyFcaEk) does a great job at it by making the overlay small mostly transparent, only highlighting the ability being used, this way it's informative but no intrusive. That's just my opinion on the matter.
Copy that. Thanks for giving your input!
I feel like yuumis trailer was pretty much on point, showcasing the personality of a champion as well as the abilities.
On the other hand, I feel like it lacked just a tiny bit of distinction between what she can actually do and what's in there just for her playful personality, specifically in the part where she looks like she has a dodge ability on the 3rd bolt from Twitches crossbow.
I feel like this could be made better by using the champs "POV" (like for the most part of yuumis trailer) for the showcasing personality part, and the traditional bird's eye view for demonstration of the abilities (it is already done a bit in the trailer but I'm not seeing the distinction clearly enough, might just be me though).
As for this champs trailer it just missed the mark for me leaving me confused and a bit frustrated until I actually saw the ability page and got some clarification on her interaction with the terrain.
Yeah we've considered something like this before, it just makes things start to feel a little formulaic. The intention behind your solution is understood though. Thanks for the feedback!
It was a cool video all in all but as others have put it is a bit confusing on what exactly is happening, for me it was the stealth bit vs the caitlyn I had no idea what was granting stealth or where she went, maybe from Qiyana perspective at one point there and I would have caught on or something. Still a great watch! just could be better! Edit: I watched it a second time after reading the abilities and it made more sense to me.
Thanks for the feedback!
I have a question about the recent champions/reworks you released. Why don't you do create a page showing the abilities, a bit about the lore, the splash arts, etc, like before?
I mean, it's the second or third champion without an actual page showing everything in one place.
Is it too much time-consuming? Is it not worth the time? It is because it would need someone to keep updating the page?
Zoe's page compared to Qiyana's or Yuumi's.
I really loved the old version. :(
Hey, I really liked the old version as well. We're trying out this new format where they champion completely takes over the client and trying to make that experience better. It is also a bit more streamlined which helps us be able to focus on other projects as well.
I do not have full context though, as I am a video producer so mainly focus on production of the video.
With all of that said, keep giving your opinions! It helps us learn and improve and nothing is ever permanent.
I guess I don't have anything new to add to the discussion about the video.
It was complicated to understand her kit before reading the abilities but it was really cool to see! I found the camera angle when she fights Camille a bit disorienting... I actually thought my phone rotated the screen when looking at the background...
I think your idea was to highlight her weapon but it didn't work really well. The application of the same angle while showing the explosion on walls was good! It's so nice when a champion interacts with the terrain. :)
I was reading some comments... Did you also make Yuumi's teaser? It was really good to understand the kit and the video itself was fun to watch.
Do you know if she can use the 3 elements in Howling Abyss (ARAM)?
Thanks for the feedback!
Yes I did work on the yuumi trailer as well.
I do not know how it will all work on ARAM, sorry :(
Is riot incapable of making a new champion with no dash ability
Neeko doesn't have a dash :), neither does Kayle, or Nunu
I just watched this again and realized something. The jungle that Book teleported Yuumi to near the end looks like the jungle at the start of Qiyana's trailer!
:)
