Love it! The thematic is so flexible too! Expect this to comeback after the next year line up. Hope we get more champions turned into robo suits with animals controlling theme.
You’re absolutely right that there’s a ton of flexibility in Space Groove. We’ll be watching the results and also surveying players afterwards to make sure we understand whether people liked it and why or why not.
Assuming it does well we’re super excited to extend this universe to a bunch of other champs. :)
It's an absolutely hilarious thematic that you guys knocked out of the park. The colors, animations, sound effects -- everything on these skins captures the aesthetic wonderfully.
Part of me finds it a little odd that there was so much of a pet/animal focus in what could easily have been just "Retro Disco Future" and been amazing just on those merits (Samira and Lux are probably my favorites for that reason -- I think the fact that they don't play into the zany animal design that much actually strengthens them as far as the "retro disco" goes), but the rest are super endearing and extremely charming -- just perhaps not quite as thematically strong in my personal view.
I really hope this theme takes off, as this is one of the first themes in a while I'm really excited to see more of. It sort of hits some of the stuff I loved about Demacia Vice, in a weird way.
Jinx, Bard, Ivern (I really just want to see him dance), Xayah/Rakan (double disco!) and 70's space groove Taric all seem like great contenders in the future. Maybe a goopy Zac that takes on some of the stretchiness of Space Groove Willump.
Thanks for the note Djinn. Internally we saw some people that loved the animal angle and some that loved the humans. We decided why not both? :)

Have to come in to say that I'm absolutely glad you've gone out of your way to try something different and it really shows the bounds of creativity. I much prefer this to any other type of futuristic themes you guys generally rehash (which I feel have gotten boring). This also signifies that you haven't forgotten about the more light-hearted, jokey skin lines and the sound design is f**king brilliant. This is amazing, truly. I don't even play Samira but might buy it out of principle.
You hit the nail on the head as it relates to sound. Huge kudos go out to the audio team on these skins. True heroes.
I'm loving the theme. And It's probably the closest I'm gonna get for new demacia vice skins.

I know it’s unlikely as he’s not super popular but I really love the idea of Kennen in a little disco space suit, his shurikens could be little disco balls, his ult could be like a big shining disco ball :D

did u guys steam mooncake from final space for lux?
I love Final Space and Mooncake, but at the time of making the sounds for Barney I wasn't thinking about Mooncake! No one in the earlier meetings brought up resemblance to mooncake either. Only after our players started saying today that it looks similar to Mooncake did I go like "huh... wait it kind of does!" :D
This skinline looks like it has a lot of soul (lol) behind it, and I'm actually looking forward to the release. Did the development differ significantly from other skin development timelines? Are there going to be more of these completely distinct explorations like this in the future for finding new niches?
These skins are a product of the Thematic Development process and team that we called out in our Season Start video. Our goal is to keep making new thematics that we have high confidence will be hits with players, with a few thematics each year being “wildcards” or creative risks that we aren’t so sure about but have something about them we believe in internally.
Do you already have a list of future champs in this skin line or you'll wait to see how it'll turn out????

I think what sells it for me is how overly space disco it is. I like disco music even though that in itself is a hot take. I took a history of rock and roll class in college once and my professor said we're skipping disco. I asked why and she said something along the lines of "I wish I could fail you for asking that" and just laughed. I'm totally down for some old school space funk type shit.

She was cool and she liked me, I was one of four kids that actually knew how to play and shit, the rest took it thinking it would be easy credits, so I knew she was joking. I just memed on her hard cause she clearly hated disco and I wanted to rib her for it, cause most people seem to hate disco from my experience. Gimme some Disco Fever funky bassline while I just ignite kids on Rumble and I'm vegging.
Here’s hoping that these skins live up to what your disco fantasies have painted in your mind. :)

Were you in charge of some of the skins? I absolutely love every skins in this line, this must be jarring putting a new skin line on the shelves but the work and efforts put in show! I love them! :D
Thank you! I'm really glad that you love the Space Groove skinline! I wasn't in charge but I was one of the sound designers working on the skins - Lux and Nasus. As sound designers, we all help give feedback to not only other sound designers but also concept artists, VFX artists and splash artists. There was especially a lot of care and love put into this skinline due to us just naturally falling in love with the skinline too. Soon you'll hear the official Space Groove theme that our composer wrote which was where it REALLY inspired all of us. Really excited for you guys to hear it.

Can’t comment on unannounced parts of future roadmap. The survey was meant to help us understand what players really wanted to see out of that line up and why. Some things get great feedback and we fast track them through production, others aren’t as widely liked and we have to dig into feedback to reflect on what changes we can reasonably make.
TLDR - You’ll have to wait and see. Really appreciate you taking the time to fill out the survey if you did though. Can’t emphasize enough how much it helps us.
If yah guys do all the remaining champs that had'nt had a skin in 2020(whose champs had their last skin in 2018-2019), you would hit 2 birds in one stone in 2021. It means that there are no more 1000 day club skins and all champs have an updated pool of skins in just 1 year, which was just last year.
I hope you could also tackle in your future article about champs that Just got a VGU, in due of a VGU and VGUs on developement and way to their relaunch. Tell us what are the last straw in making their skins in the future. For ex, Udyr just got announced as the next VGU after mundo, when will we expect his next skin? Will it tie to his re-released or months after cause it will put him again first in the "days since last skin" category. Then, examples for in due of skins is shyvanna, skarner, etc., would you guys held back again and release skins for them in a long run or did your game plan change and you'll be focusing on doing them skins more often like unpopular champs, unless they are green lit as the next VGU. Lastly, for VGUs that is in development already like mundo, mundo's last skin was in 2018. Would we expect him to have his next skin with his relaunch or months after? If months after, will it be longer?

Lot of questions but I’ll describe one broader dynamic that covers a lot of what you’re talking about.
Whenever a VGU or VU is being done for a champion, we try to avoid making skins for that champion for a period. The reason is that when the base look or ability set of a champion is changing, it can be really painful for skins teams that are working on personalization content for that champion.
Wasted work or work we have to redo can be really frustrating and demotivating, so we tend to wait until a VGU or VU is complete before jumping in and making something for a given champ.
Thanks for the answer. But, how about the in due ones that didnt get the chance to be reworked yet like shyvanna, skarner, etc. She got no skins for 4 years because of this sole reason. Would those champs still gets neglected? Or when they reach the bottom of the days without a skin club, thats when you go and work on a new skin for that champ?
For champs that aren’t on deck for a VGU or VU for a while, we do what we can to make skins for them. Good example is Shyvana. We thought the Ruined thematic was a really good fit for her so we decided to make a skin for her rather than wait.
