Edit: It's confirmed by u/WotC_Jay that it's a bug specifically for direct challenges. Should be fixed with a patch anytime soon!

Hey there! While watching the fandom legends tournament I realized that you as a player don't see the same avatar that the opponent actually uses but a random one.

The tournament is Bo3 so they show the first game from player 1's perspective and the second game from the other players perspective as both players have to stream their games. And the avatars don't match up!

I was really confused when I saw this as I haven't heard anyone talk about it before.. is it common knowledge that it works like that? Is that only for direct challenges or in normal play too?

That would actually mean, that if you decide to pay for cosmetics in form of an avatar only you get to see exactly that. Also no more baiting the opponent with Teferi avatar and matching azorius sleeves and actually playing mono red. Maybe that was never a thing..

Please correct me if I'm wrong .. or tell me if there is any official word on this!

In the prior build this was a general bug. We thought we fixed it, but it turns out the bug still happens in Direct Challenge (but is fixed in other modes). We’ll fix the DC portion in a future update.

I got this bug last week in Draft (July 20), I watched the VOD of my game against a streamer and my avatar wasn’t correct

That matches; the fix went out in the update on the 25th. Since your match was before then, that was when it was bugged everywhere.
