If I wanted to play rock paper scissors Iā€™d go do that instead

Short version: Yes, it's one of our more popular Midweek Magic modes.

Longer version:

MWM events are what we call "engagement plays" - they're events we run to give players something fun to do. This means the key ways we evaluate them are factors like how many players they appeal to and how much fun those players seemed to be having. Social sentiment is one way to measure this, but it's prone to some well-known biases. We do look at and consider those opinions, but we rely more on the play data we have.

Turns out that there are some pretty predictable patterns to these numbers.

The baseline is "Novel Constructed format" (On the Edge, Pauper, Singleton, etc.) For ease of comparison, I'll say that gets 100 players.

You would probably expect Phantom Limited events to be more popular, and you're right. They get ~150 players. Precon events are pretty similar, coming in just under 150 players.

When we run Normal Constructed MWM events (Standard, Historic, etc.) those get about 120 players.

Momir, though clearly controversial here, is one the more popular modes in terms of players. It comes in around 130 players.

In addition to raw entries, the other key value we look at a lot for MWM events is the average games per player. We generally use this as a (rough) gauge of fun factor for the event - If players are playing more games in the event, it's because they're enjoying the experience.

In terms of game/player, the Novel Constructed events outperform anything that's not All Access. The Normal Constructed events do okay here, and the limited, precon, and Momir events come in near the bottom. This is part of why we started experimenting with adding non-land cards to the Momir decks, to see if we could get that fun factor up. Sample size is small, but the indications are generally positive.

Can we return to regular Momir without the inserted cards from new Capenna? EDIT: I read the full comment now. You sort of already address this. I will take the L. No regular Momir. =(

I wouldn't say "No regular". I expect us to continue running and testing both. But we're interested in seeing if we can find something overall more fun that the all-lands version. (Individual tastes will always vary, of course.)

my only 2c is that Choosing X= and discarding the card just 'feels like a lot more clicks' than playing MTGA usually requires. I don't dislike the format per se, that's just the main friction point for me.

I also have no idea how one would improve this so, take with a grain of salt I suppose šŸ™ƒ

Valid! I'll think on it

If you want to increase Momir's fun factor, perhaps consider finding a way to speed up the game.

Right now most creatures between 1-3 (maybe even 4) mana just don't do enough to create interesting scenarios, yet you have to go through that phase of the game literally every single time. So when someone high-rolls you and wins with an essentially unbeatable creature, it just feels awful because you can't simply requeue and get back to the fun dice-rolling part - you have to go through the slow start all over again.

Not a bad idea! I've passed it on and we're tossing around ideas
