Brand new to Magic; played my first paper games a few weeks ago and jumped into Arena after that.

I have not yet tried to build a deck; I feel I don't know nearly enough about the cards yet, but I think I just have to pick a color/favorite mechanic, do some keyword searches, and start building. In the meantime, I've been bumping up my card collection using the handful of free Jump In tokens you get early on.

Oh man, Jump In is a blast. The random deck combos give you a lot of exposure to different types of cards, mechanics, and synergies (some you figure out and employ intentionally, others that you discover randomly by playing what's in your hand, and then also the ones you see used against you). The relatively even pairing in deck strengths between you and your opponent means almost every game is tense, can turn on a dime, has a high chance of being absolutely bonkers, and is played all the way to the end, rather than having too many uneven stompings and early concessions.

I've been whittled down to 1 life point and somehow fought my way back to win plenty of times. I've taken off to an almost insurmountable lead only to be absolutely thrashed by an opponent's midgame rush or swing. I've seen game mechanic and card types I didn't even know Magic had, like mechs and samurai and ninjas, and dungeons and dragons.

Long story short, I'm a Jump In fan, and I think it's great practice for getting ready to build your first deck and start playing ranked/constructed matches.

Question, though: are there any resources out there to help beginners build their first deck without just giving them a deck build? I know there are plenty of sites that list optimum/meta builds and there are lots of established decks out there, but are there any guides or resources that'll gives tips on building a deck out of the cards you have on hand?

Thanks, this looks great!

Came here to say this. That series is so good it’s linked in Arena’s Learn More page (question mark on the upper-right).

And glad to hear you’re enjoying Jump In!
