I am here once again to raise my voice in frustration at how the devs have refused to fix the fact that it is still possible to do accels that require reaction times of sub 150ms and force the user to both have top tier hardware and good internet connection to parry consistently. And as there doesnt seem to be any real response or answer I am going to attempt to explain my understanding of how to best do them as to spread awareness and hopefully end the reign of the insta accel. Step by step this is my comp player (with 2k hours) explanation on how to do instant accels that push you opponents reaction times beyond their limits.

  1. The first thing you will need to do is understand the lunge mechanic. This mechanic is a hidden lunge that players get while attacking while sprinting forwards. Good players have mastered the timing of the lunge down perfectly and use it to there advantage. The simple idea behind it is you want to attack and time your lunge to be at its peak right before your attack is about to hit your opponent. Now not only will your weapon be moving forwards but your entire body as fast as possible.
  2. The next thing you will want to do is understand that you are going to want to start your swing with your cursor on their hips. This keeps your swing low enough that they cant duck nor jump it easily it also helps masks the fact that you are acceling by barrel stuffing your face into there's. By looking down you best hide the fact that you are acceling rather than dragging.
  3. Its good to note that footwork wise you should either be standing directly infront of them or slightly diagonal and ALWAYS accel from the inside side. That means start your accel on the same side as your opponent is standing
  4. The next factor, and here is where it gets complicated, you want to keep your cursor on their chest during the windup phase (the part where you can feint out of it or where your hands are moving back) of the attack and then once it enters release (starts moving forwards and can do damage) you want to snap your hand as hard as you can with your swing off of their chest and to the side. With this motion you should get your weapon to snap into your opponent as the animation attempts to catch up with the motionless windup in the beginning.
  5. The next concept you will want to focus on is ALWAYS AIM FOR THE HEAD. When you are doing these attacks in order to get it to appear as fast as possible you should always hit them where their camera is thus always aim for the face. It's important to note that your cursor doesn't need to be on their head to hit them in the face, understand that you can still hit someone in the face while staring at the ground as long as you line up the swing and footwork correctly.
  6. The last step is to combine all these aspect together and practice. It takes a couple of hundred hours to get a solid grasp on how to best tie these mechanics so its best to isolate each one and grind it out until its best understood (emphasis on step 4)

Finally, its important to note that your goal is to make your opponent not realize that you are acceling until the last moment. This means its absolutely necessary that you mask the animation as long as possible. Also you DONT NEED A RIPOSTE TO DO GOOD ACCELS. In fact it is sometimes argued that accels with no riposte are in fact fast than those from ripostes so dont get trapped into the idea that you need a riposte to hit a good accel. Good players have mastered how to accel and through masking the animation to as late as possible are able to make their accels as scary in and out of riposte equally.

And since this post is made largely out of frustration and anger these are the weapons you should abuse the f*ck out of in a semi tier list.

  1. Evening star is by far and away the best duel weapon in the game and its accels are borderline instant. For some god forsaken reason the hit box is still broken on it so when you hit someone in the face it will hit them before the animation indicates that it has done so.
  2. I obviously have to put the greatsword and executioner sword in the same category as they both play pretty similarly. With these spam the f*ck outta overheads and alternate between toe drags (if you can manage) and overhead accels. These weapons are pretty good at accels within their own right and are some of the best dueling weapons in the game only beaten by the Evening star.
  3. War axe with its insane combo speed leads to some accels that can make your opponent feel like they have been one tapped they are so fast.
  4. Poleaxe (alt grip only) has some of the best accels in the game though its stam game and short length make it not always the best weapon. But if you just want to sh*t on some newer players or even some better players who arent ripped off of Adderall just master the accel and spam the sh*t out of it.
  5. Next is really two weapons both messer and longsword have some insane accels that, when done correctly can ruin someone's day. But require face hug which is a bit of a downside.

These are just some weapons that I recommend if you want to be really annoying obviously there are some other weapons that one could and should pick. And its important to note that no weapon is really "slow" in this game when put into the hands of someone who knows how to accel correctly.

When these accels are done perfectly, or really just at a mediocre level, more often than not you end up forcing your opponent into spamming CHFTP (Chamber feint to parry) as a desperate attempt to defend themselves.

I guess Ill wrap up this post by plugging my other mega rant on how accels have fundamentally broken the game. I understand that big text posts like this dont always get the most traction on the subreddit but I've spent a sh*t ton of time playing this game and Ill answer any questions in the comments below as best as I can so feel free to ask away!

(BTW my accel post is a bit dated, especially in regards to the kick stuff, but it still carries alot of my complaints that I had hoped the devs would have addressed by now but here it is anyways.)

We are fixing drags and accels. We have found some issues that are causing unintended insta accels, and things that create completely unreadable situations, and we're working on fixing them :)
