14s it's like a mystery we got to figure

25s eternum where we talk about All Things
26s New World I'm Scott today I'm here with
29s Charles and Dan and we're going to talk
30s a little bit about azath
35s foreign

43s we had this new guy love and start here
45s and he asked me where azath came from it
48s was kind of funny because I was like
50s and we've worked on this game a long
52s time and I struggled thinking about it
54s but I I thought it'd be a cool topic so
57s um
58s you know at the beginning I remember we
60s we had this concept of the the island
62s being the Fountain of Youth right and
64s people would come there looking for it
67s and I and I couldn't quite in my mind
69s Bridge how we came from that to the
72s concept of azath I think Dan you had
74s some ideas around Ora call come if I'm
76s not mistaken true yeah we we wanted to
80s kind of we always liked the idea of like
82s it's also Atlantis and then it's also
85s like every other lost place on Earth
89s um yeah this island kind of felt like
91s this island was
94s like a lot of things fall on this island
96s it was called a lot of different names
97s to a lot of different places and parts
99s of History exactly yeah I think this
102s time period was really interesting
103s because there was like a whole bunch of
105s ideas in science about magic and like
108s how they could take one element and turn
110s it into another if they just found this
112s like super special secret stuff and then
115s like like scientists really thought if
117s they could turn lead into gold if they
118s found this magical substance and that's
121s I think that somewhere tied into the
123s idea of this so like we need this thing
125s that like can make magic real in our
127s world and that's where I think Azon came
129s from is like oh what if they actually
130s found it what if it was the Fountain of
132s Youth or something that like led to this
134s all this other mythological stuff could
136s come out of that I think that is an
139s interesting concept because it it kind
141s of like took us off in this direction I
143s remember doing a lot of research on like
145s Alchemy because like I didn't I didn't
147s know how deep it ran like Isaac Newton
148s was an alchemist
150s like it was just pretty nutty
153s well and you you pitched or a caulkham
156s and I think the reason we pushed away
159s from that is because when the research
160s showed that being a like a pinkish metal
164s and we wanted we liked which I thought
165s was great but yeah so the way we liked
167s it but I think the idea of azoth the
170s blue and the red contrast of good and
171s bad because when you're making a game
173s visual that color language is important
175s yeah we needed that like pure like this
177s is the the source of magic and usually
180s that's like white or blue and sort of
182s sort of like it feels natural and then
183s there's like the corruption is the dark
185s sort of counter to that so it was a nice
188s visual sort of tie-in yeah well and that
190s was a fun Evolution to the to the whole
192s Fountain of Youth was you know it made
195s sounds great to live forever until you
197s really think about it you know and you
199s start remember the didn't we we Dove
200s deeper and deeper into the topic and we
202s were like
205s yeah it gets like deep and dark really
208s fast and like oh okay what does that
209s mean how does that like affect your life
211s and all your loved ones and like what
213s how do you like deal with that in
215s reality I'll take it yeah it's uh it's
218s an interesting topic and what happens to
220s your brain yeah
222s some of our early lore I remember too it
224s like got really dark and deep too we
226s were like kind of like I don't know I
228s don't know if this is actually like a
229s world I want to hang out in it's kind of
230s kind of depressing yeah but we we did
233s like the contrast of the beauty of the
235s island and the danger and the harshness
237s of the reality and I remember uh
240s I don't remember exactly how we came up
242s with it but the idea of the azath
243s flowing below flowing beneath the island
245s which led to the deeper you went into
248s the island the more pronounced it was
249s because you were getting more toward
251s that
251s the uh the center of it and
254s yeah I still love that I mean and that's
256s that's still like like when you fast
258s travel the the VFX for that is is kind
261s of meant to imply like you're
263s dematerializing into that like Network
265s under the ground yeah the Ley lines or
267s something to sort of like connect these
269s like key points yeah and that was the
270s island was like the center point of a
272s bunch of different Underground
274s streams of azath flowing and that flowed
276s into our lore too we had this idea like
278s the major points all across the island
281s are like on these like Nexus spots and
283s then people who came would naturally
284s just gravitate towards those energy
286s sources and they'd build their towns
287s there and so it was this like layering
288s of like ancient and then the new stuff
290s and then more stuff on top of that so
292s the story kind of like tells the history
294s a little bit and the Ancients harnessing
296s that power and building the towers and
298s then the the the the down into the
301s volcano or the Shattered Mountain Area
303s like this a lot of this is still left
305s open for the future for for Rob our our
308s narrative guy to explore exactly
311s um we we have a few long-term ideas I'd
314s rather not like get into them because
317s they're not fleshed out enough to where
318s I feel comfortable but
320s there's there's just so much like
322s it's at the core of the story and the
324s lore and I can I can tell you for sure
326s from a lower perspective there's going
327s to be there's going to be some more
329s stuff coming out in the coming years
330s that
331s that
333s show you a lot more about where we're
335s thinking about as author what like the
336s history behind it and why it's so
339s valuable especially to the ancients
341s I always liked the way we tied the lore
345s into like the gameplay mechanics of like
348s even just when you die in the game like
349s you your character gets killed or you
351s kill another character they like
352s dissolve into this stuff and then you
354s like reanimate with the stuff and so
356s like the A's office like taking your
357s body form and spitting it back out again
359s and that like ties the like the lore of
362s life and death like back together so and
364s then into the gameplay mechanic I think
365s is always fun when we could do that kind
367s of thing and I like too how there's like
368s it's it's a there's a central kind of
371s source for all the magic stuff it kind
373s of just makes it makes it kind of you
376s know easy to track like because like as
378s we already have in the game like like
380s that magic can lead to all kinds of
382s nutty stuff and it was always uh like
385s meant to be through the through the mind
387s of whoever you are when you come to the
390s island that like you you manifest the
392s Magic in different ways based on like
394s you know your cultural heritage and like
396s the mythology that you believe in and
397s the stuff that scares you and stuff like
399s that it's really cool I also like the
401s whole other side of it which is
404s too much of a a good thing can become
407s corrupted too much you know like the the
409s human nature can take over and turn it
412s into something that it wasn't meant to
414s be
415s and then that can spread and change
416s things and creates new types of magic
419s and new types of
421s encounters that you see all through
423s shatter Mountain great cleave and you
425s know spread out throughout the all of
426s the tournament I always like to that the
428s the theme of immortality fits really
430s well with the MMO genre and just kind of
433s things that MMOs like are unique to him
435s I was like
436s you you never die either there's
438s anything
440s has good lore behind it when I'm playing
442s yeah like it was it feels good that like
444s hey we explained that yeah yeah
448s designing it visually was interesting
450s too because we had to like it started as
452s like oh it's just like this magic water
454s the Fountain of Youth and it like gives
455s you energy like but then like how do we
457s like show that in the world
459s and then and I know for our very first
461s trailer we needed to show like this
463s character dies but then it like goes
465s through their eyes and like they pop
466s back to life and so we're like What is
468s the like the flow of it and then we
470s wanted it to have this almost like
471s liquid in the air Vibe sort of flowing
475s out like steam yeah kind of this like
477s vaporous like stuff that like flows out
479s I think that kind of took us to a cool
481s place there was this period of time we
483s were like okay we know that like azoth
485s is this like source of magic and we want
487s our world to feel really Supernatural
488s but I think we were struggling a little
490s bit with like how do we like show the
492s supernatural in the world in a way that
494s players are gonna like instantly like oh
496s I see that thing and like okay I'm not
498s on like the real history Earth I'm I'm
500s in this sort of like Supernatural place
502s and we started coming up with these like
504s you know Supernatural Wonders that we
506s wanted to have around at different
507s points in the world and that was one of
509s them the shattered Obelisk where we were
511s like okay here's this Lake Tower we have
512s these towers all over the world there's
513s ancient structures but then like what if
516s this one like exploded in Magic but then
519s it like froze at the same time and sort
521s of these like weird Concepts and we're
523s like okay what would that look like and
524s put that in there and then it was like
525s well what is it what does it mean and
527s we're like well I don't know it's like a
529s mystery we gotta figure that out let's
530s let's the Lord's got to explain that
532s later well I remember same goes with
534s corruption when Jeff put together the
536s corruption pulling up oh yeah you know
539s he designed it because it looked really
541s cool yeah and I immediately was like is
543s it trying to get away from the azath is
545s it trying to get away from the earth
546s where is it going what's the drive and I
548s don't think we've explained that one yet
550s but it was an interesting
552s you know it said that the aesthetic was
553s so good that we like okay we got it like
556s we can't not have this that was one of
558s those kinds of like okay what looks what
560s what's different than real reality okay
562s what if gravity goes backwards for this
564s stuff only yeah and it creates a cool
566s look I think we've come up with some
568s cool like explanations for that that I
570s don't know if we've really revealed yet
571s but
572s you know which is interesting and it
574s almost leads to a community question
576s right which is uh you know where
579s where would you take it next where would
580s you go from a gameplay perspective with
582s azoth you know it's
585s there's so many different places we
586s could take it like you said we had it
587s tied pretty heavily into the uh to fast
590s travel and some of the other Concepts in
592s the game there's a lot more we could do
594s with it so we'd love to hear what you
