Ah, I see. Digging doesn't really work the same as DF where you leave a ceiling and floor after mining. You *can* build multi-level fortresses directly on top of each other, but you need to manually build the floors to separate the two levels.

That's also how you build stuff midair if you'd like some roofing. :)
