Now that the beta version 0.7.0.10 is out, I thought I'd write a little tutorial about rooms. I do plan on making a tutorial this next week, but this should be a good start to help you out if you're confused.

Room placement works pretty much how it did before, but now there is some added settler behavior and UI.

Room Size - This will determine how many settlers can be in your room. For every 3 tiles, you can have 1 Settler. A 3x3 Bedroom will house 3 Settlers.

Professions - Workshops will now require the correct profession to be used. No one cooking your food? Does the workshop have a cook? If not, you'll need one. Having the skill toggled on isn't enough.

Room Settings - You can click on a room to open it's settings window. From here, you can change who owns the rooms as well as designate items.

Item Designation - Right now, the Tavern is the only room that uses this. This determines what items you want people to be served at the Tavern. The cook will then go about feeding your Settlers that item when they relax in the Tavern. i.e., Selecting Wheat Ale as an item will mean your Cook will serve it there.

Auto Joining - As long as the room is big enough and the Settler fits the room's requirements, they will automatically join a room. Keep in mind that if a Settler is off busy doing something, they might not take ownership right away. For Bedrooms, families will try to join a room together. Make sure they have enough space to do so. Also, your settlers won't have children unless they have a room with their companion. Lastly, when a child becomes an adult, they will move out of the room into a free one.

I'm sure this doesn't cover everything, but I hope it helps a bit. I know it's a pretty complex system so feel free to shoot me any questions. More than happy to help. :)

Thanks!

@hola_soy_luis, thanks for the feedback. Many players really enjoy building underground dwellings, and I think it would be a mistake to punish them for wanting to pursue that type of base. If players want to make a mountain home, that's great and they should have the creative freedom to do so without me trying to force them to make what I want.

I prefer to have pros and cons to the two types of bases that balance out. For example, building on the surface is safer but costs more resources. Building underground, you have the chance to open a hostile dungeon or den but it's easier to get rooms up and running. Both have interesting dynamics, and I think that makes the game fun.

The next big update we are focused on will be all about the overworld map and stuff like that. :)

Oh, I'll try to fix this. Must have borked something recently. Thanks for letting me know.

Hi!

Sorry for the late reply. Did not see this post.

how high do the rooms need to be?
A room needs to be 1 block in height. You can choose to build a roof platform over it or solid blocks. To build a roof in midair, hold ALT while placing the blueprints.

2 blocks high?
No.

do i need to also make a roof? Settlers like roofs over their rooms. Makes them happier.
i tried to make a room out of wood walls (i made a flat square of wood on the ground). i seen in the video that they placed a room (square with a hollow centre). Not sure how to do that.
To leave the centre hollowed, hold down CTRL while placing the blueprints.

Do i need to make a door to the room too?
You don't have to. You can lock doors if you get attacked.

does placing the door replace the already-constructed wood wall?
No. You need to leave an open space. You can deconstruct things you've built if you need to make a hole.

or do i need to leave a gap?
Yes.

do i need to zone a room as "bedroom" and build beds or something so they sleep in them at night?
Settlers will try to sleep in beds that are in their bedrooms first. If they can't find a bed, they will look for the next open bed that isn't in someone else's room.

or just build beds and they'll sort themselves out?
It's best to build beds in their rooms. They will get unhappy when sleeping on the ground and not having their own bedrooms.

Hope that helps!
