[2022] wild cows are eating my food

I'm a new player and I swear I've pressed all the buttons and I don't know what to do. I equipped my people with weapons they brought. I pressed the attack button and selected a cow. I built a wall around it and put on a door I have no food and when I do get food the cows eat it all.
