Ever wanted to craft enough runes to last a lifetime? The Scar Essence Mine has exactly what you're after, so long as you have the means to afford it...

Why not just do packs? If buying bloods and hopping is still more runes p/h than this update, people are still going to buy the runes and hop world

Pretty much for the reasons the blog states, shopping and hopping isn't going to be as many runes/hr as using Scarred Extracts for one, and for two, the points in the blog from the devs around leveraging the skill in the game that's entirely dedicated to crafting runes as opposed to just band-aiding with more shopman mode!

Tainted essence 😳

you'd still be competing with others, hopping through worlds, and spending more time in a shop interface than out in Gielinor

Why not unlimited stock? If it's expensive enough, only irons would be using it

For your latter point, the team felt as though they'd rather actually make use of the Runecraft skill to let people obtain more runes, as opposed to just have them spending more time in shops and interfaces.

How active is the process of tainted essence & extracts? Comparing it to.. Giants Foundry? Hallowed Sepulchre? Regular old essence mine? Inbetween?

The impression that I get from the team at the moment is closer to just regular ol' essence mining, or perhaps like Drew's sandstone grinder.

This also puts a hard requirement of starting DT2 to use this method right?

Yeah in this case, some completion of DT2 (to at least gain access to the Scar) would be hard-required.

It's about the same price, give or take. For something like a Blood rune, crafting with Extracts costs 400gp per 'bonus' Blood rune, which is effectively the same as buying a Blood rune for 400gp, just that you'll be doing it at a massively increased rate compared to shopscaping.

250k blood runes, for one hour of gathering and one hour of crafting. This sounds reasonable to me.

Their estimate is buying 100k blood runes per hour. This would result in 125k blood runes per hour at max efficiency.

Just to clarify, 1 hour of 'gathering' essence shakes out to somewhere in the region of 5-6 hours of RC. The 'per hour' rough rates listed are 'per hour of gathering Extracts and crafting using all of the extracts gathered'. I.e. you could log in at the Scar Essence mine, gather your extracts, start using them up and crafting bloods, and wind up with somewhere in the region of 200-250k blood runes.

Not sure if I missed it in the blog, but how would these work at ZMI? If I had the relevant extracts in my invent would I get the boosted runes from there as well?

Tried to throw a line in the blog to make this clearer, but these won't work with the ZMI. As much as I'd love for it to be some fancy and mysterious lore reason, it's ultimately just that it would be extremely complicated to dev this in a way that worked at ZMI, and this project is intended to be extremely quick for the devs to turnaround (assuming it passes polling).

As nice as it is knowing you can potentially craft 200k+ bloods an hour, how many can you obtain starting from 0 tainted essence in an hour?

The figures given are assuming you start with 0 Extracts, and that you spend the hour both obtaining the Extracts and then using them to craft the Runes within the hour. So the 200k+ figure you've quoted is also the answer to your question!

Blog post doesn't seem to mention xp rates. Could this be a new rc training method as well?

Stealing this from a Twitter reply: the only thing really impacted is the number of runes, XP rates shouldn't be impacted in the slightest, unless you include gathering Extracts in your time (and it is included in the estimates used in the post), in which case your effective XP rate would probably be a little lower than you're used to.

I will likely vote no strictly due to how low rune prices already are. We don't need another update that pumps runes into the game, especially the higher tier.

I think there's better ways of going about making it easier for irons to get pure essence.

Edit: Reread the post, still not a fan of it unless the xp per hour isn't that great. If it becomes meta, those runes will 100% flood the ge.

I won't disagree that the main beneficiaries of an update like this are Irons, but want to point out that anybody using this mine to make runes and sell them on would be losing huge chunks of the GP they spent on extracts.

Obviously feel free to vote however you please, but just don't want people to think that this is likely to impact maingame rune prices because that shouldn't be the case at all.

25,000 Scarred Extracts, assuming you crafted all of them would result in a total of 25,000 * 60 = 1,500,000 Extra blood runes.

The figures quoted assume that you can mine 25,000 Scarred Extracts in an hour, but that the 'hour' for the figures includes the time taken to mine as many extracts as you can use up in the time leftover, if that makes sense?

If you were to sit and mine Extracts for a full hour, they'd probably last you somewhere in the region of 5-6 hours of RC, depending on things like Giant vs. Colossal pouch and how few ticks you lose to stuff like banking or withdrawing from pouches etc. (because those add up FAST)
