Hello everyone, I'm a new OSRS player. I've found the game after a long search for my "perfect" type of MMORPG - one that lets you basically do whatever you want and be whoever you want - and I think I've finally found it within this game. I've played a couple hours and really enjoyed my time, also I love the "old" graphics style, I find it charming. Now, I want to ask you guys some questions about the game:

  1. I currently play on mobile (since I work and travel a lot). Will my account also be available on desktop if I download the game client there?
  2. Are mobile players seen "differently", or considered worse, like in most other cross-platform mobile games?
  3. I've heard that the desktop version has some unofficial clients that make some parts of the menu management easier. Are they considered illegal, and if not so, which one would you guys recommend?
  4. Is the game population healthy? I think the best part of MMOs is to get to know new people, and I'd love to do so in a game like this, since most of the community seems friendly (or at least, from the outside).

I know all these questions can be found by googling a bit, but I'd rather hear opinions from active players to get an even better overview of the game.

Thank you guys in advance. :)

EDIT:

Also, how the heck is Sea Shanty 2 so catchy?!

Hi /u/zVeesha and welcome to OSRS! I kinda envy you - there's yet so much for you to discover in-game!

Other users have answered your questions, but I want to add that if you go to our website you can see how many players are online at that exact moment, a feature I've always loved since way back in '05 when I started.

Are you a new JMod? I don't think I've seen that name before and your Reddit account is new. But you do have the JMod Flair..

Hey. You gotcha, new account, new mod, yes - excited to engage with y'all.

Good to hear. :)

I assume that we get your official introduction on the next Q&A stream then, correct? Or are you from another department?

Not sure actually. What department was the assumption?

A reply from a person working at Jagex? Now, I really feel welcome.

That was my intention, glad it worked! Now go you, and have fun killin' 'em cows!

Not sure if it Jagex internally classifies it as a department, but I meant the the Old School team. They host the OSRS Q&A stream and usually new staff members to that team do an introduction.

Ah! While there are super organised departments, I'm in the Tech Services, so I'm not directly tied into any of our games/services, but instead I develop features that those games/services rely on. Does that clear it up? (This might mean I won't get introduced in stream)

Hah! Finally someone hints at it. Took less time than I thought!

Yes, that does explain why there's suddenly a new name.

Happy to help!

How many people have done the family Guy Consuela joke on you?

Not many yet! On Reddit, just one!

For real though, can you clean up the state of account security while you're there? :/

Since I'm very - very - new here, I don't have any significant input to give you on that, and I'd rather not comment and potentially say something that is wrong.

Welcome! Glad to see a new face or name rather in this case. Whats your role in the team? Are you gonna introduce yourself on the q&a?

Thanks! Glad to be here too. I don't think I'll be introduced in any stream, as I'm not directly in any OSRS team (and there's not much need for it either) - I'm part of the Tech Services that build features that all our games/services use (web stuff, mostly, that support our sites/forums/games).

You will go far, I wish you the best of luck. If we make memes around something you say don’t take it personally as an attack that’s uhh just what we do here

I've been on that side of the river. I'm cool with memes!

As a dev myself, I'd like to hear a bit more about that, any examples on tools you guys and gals make?

If it is things like RuneMetrics/Adventure log for rs3, I'm just going to shamelessly toss out a thing on my wishlist in the hope that it sticks somewhere in the back of your mind!

I'd love to have a completed quest list available through the osrs API. I'd like to make an adapting quest requirement page for the wiki! :)

Basically the whole website is made by the Tech Services (not the game). That's a cool idea, but again, I'm pretty new and don't want to promise anything.
