I migrated my account to a Jagex account. 1 day later, I try to login and it says "Sorry your account has been disabled". What am I supposed to do now? I sent a password recovery request and I changed my password hoping that would fix it. Nope. I changed my password, I try to login with the new password and it says "Account disabled" again. I can't login to the website, never received any emails from Jagex about this. No help. No tutorials. Nothing.

I tried to do a manual recovery request and a Jagex Mod responded to my ZenDesk ticket and said that my account is "fine" and that "I can login as normal" and that there "isn't any suspicious activity on my account" and they said that my "Recovery request IP address is the same your last login". That's great! But you never solved my problem. I contacted you so that you could help me get my account back, not to tell me what I already know. My account is DISABLED for literally no reason.

I literally can't access my account. I can't recover it. I can't get help from Customer Support. I'm lost as to what to do now.

Maxed ironman gone forever due to horrible customer support. Thanks for nothing.

Edit: I don't really understand the hate towards me. I'm just asking for advice, not threatening to kill your dog.

I post legit screenshots showing my issue and I get down-voted into oblivion. What for? What did I even do?

Edit #2: I am now receiving death threats in my DM's over this post.. This community is absolutely worthless. I've never seen a more toxic community in my entire life.

Hey I've had a look into this for you.

It is very rare for us to disable a Jagex Account and it is almost exclusively only used in situations where a Jagex account only has characters added to it that were not created by the person who owns the Jagex account.

This relates to account hijackers but can also occur where a character is shared or sold, and the character has ended up on a Jagex account that is not owned by the person who created the character. Further, the character creator would also need to reach out to us to raise the ownership challenge to instigate the investigation.

I can see from some of the responses you've had from our support team that there is some confusion. I think this stems from your inquiry to us which said words to the effect that your ‘character has been imported to a Jagex account that is not yours’.

In response, our support messaging focused on the link between your support ticket IP and Jagex account creation IP, which we could see matched, and so the advice given to you focused on checking the e-mail address used for the Jagex account as it was assumed to be a login confusion issue.

However there was an underlying character ownership issue, so we should have digged deeper and picked up on that aspect, so apologies for any confusion caused.

So that is what happened .. because there was a dispute raised with the ownership of the character, and we could see that the character was created in a completely different country to where you live, that triggered an in-depth ownership check, and as a result it was deemed that the character was created by somebody else. We therefore removed the character from your Jagex account.

As you had no other characters that you created on your Jagex account, your Jagex account was also disabled as part of this process. If your Jagex account also had other characters that you had created, then the Jagex account would not be disabled and you'd be free to continue to use your Jagex account to play those characters.

I hope that helps explain the circumstances of this situation, and I'd like to assure all casual readers of this thread that we only disable Jagex accounts in very rare situations, where the only characters on the Jagex account were not created by the Jagex account user (or where we hold evidence that the Jagex account user is under 13 years old and not eligible to play).

Thanks

Not sure that is fair - more accurate I would say 'tldr - don't add characters you didn't create to your Jagex Account' ...

Doing great work there despite the misunderstanding. I think that an FAQ or AMA for redditors regarding jagex accounts might be a good idea at some point. There's so much toxicity around this subject due to misunderstanding and willful ignorance and I'm sick of reading it when the jagex account system works extremely well.

Also, a common issues section should be available to view BEFORE starting the migration process so that the user is aware of potential risks and problems and can prepare for them ahead of time.

What sort of questions do you expect that would be helpful? I've had a read and most of the comments seem to be players with opinions already dug in from threads such as this one - sadly. "Are Jagex accounts safe" - Yes! Upgrade now.

/u/Mod_Stevew's team have already created a Jagex Accounts FAQ and as you can see on the Upgrade your RuneScape character to Jagex account (step 2) there already is a 'warning' page with some other details players may find useful, that page is negatively affecting our objectives for Jagex Accounts but we understand how important that page is.

There's only so much reading an average player will do so we need to be careful how long each step is explained especially that page I linked above. How many players have you seen ask how rituals work in RuneScape for Necromancy because they spacebarred through the tutorial ;)

What did you mean by rituals? Is there some sort of ritual I can do beforehand to increase the odds my account migration is successful?

If you struggle during the account migration, feel free to reply here and I'll help :)

Sorry if I misread (english second language + poor reading skills xd) but did this this happen because the original owner of the account was disputing this and not because of the login locations alone? I'm asking because I no longer live on the country where I made my account (been 16 years after all) and want to do the link soon.

Don't worry we got you! People obviously move around, so that isn't an issue. However if someone then challenges the creation and claims that somebody else has imported a character they created to a Jagex Account, we'll then do an investigation.

Here's my Jagex account questions:

1) Why not make a quick simple video of someone setting up an account, importing characters, changing things around, and then explaining some simple FAQ's or troubleshooting at the end? I think a large percentage of people, myself included, don't have a true indication of how it works - specifically if you play multiple accounts and are logged in at the same time.

2) What about people who share accounts? Whether it's someone wanting to PK on a pure with an infernal cape, or IRL friends that have GIM's that log in and just put an item in the group storage, it seems like Jagex accounts may limit or even get you straight up banned if you try this. Would someone have to use the normal Runelite client to log into someone elses account, or is it even possible to use the normal clients for an account associated with the Jagex Launcher?

3) What about accounts you've given away? I got my friend to play because I made an account, did waterfall, tree gnome, fight arena, etc and got him mith gloves, then gave him the account. For another example, you can see EVScape's video where he gives his manager (Mason) a pure account Does this mean that if Mason tried to import that account, it would be immediately banned?

4) I've heard there is a character limit - How many is it & can you quickly delete, replace, and add again a character? Like if I had say 20 accounts, I could delete my 99 slayer untrimmed pure, add in a UIM for a few months, then remove the UIM and add back my 99 slayer untrimmed when I start playing it again?

  1. Here you go
  2. You'll need to access our games through the Launcher or our Mobile apps. The Jagex Launcher only supports our official RuneScape and Old School RuneScape Clients and RuneLite with HDOS becoming available in the future
  3. The person who created the character can dispute things if somebody else adds it to a Jagex account, and we'll investigate case-by-case to try and help
  4. The limit is 20 currently. You can re-order characters. Archiving characters is not a confirmed future feature, but the Publishing Platform team are looking into it

edit; for transparency, some of my answers above are direct C+P from resources we already supply not custom - a good resource spot is here

My GIMmate added an account to his Jagex Account that wasn't created by him, and he's tried to reach out about 30 times through customer support to have someone remove it from his Jagex account because he doesn't want what's happened to OP to happen to him if the guy who made the account years ago decides to come back to the game.

Can any support track be added for people in this situation? It's very frustrating that he's trying to fix his mistake but cannot get any assistance.

Ideally the challenge would come from the actual character creator, if we can verify their claim we can then move the character to another Jagex Account. Presumably you friend doesn't want the character, so if we do release an archive character feature in the future that might help.

Appreciate the response. My friends worry is that if the OC creator does recover, do thelegitimate accounts he created have any risk for being banned?

Cheers and have a great day.

Nope he is all good there - scenarios below .... (your friend would be the first one)

  • Jagex account has multiple characters, some are not created by the Jagex account user, dispute arises, characters moved off the Jagex account but legitimate characters remain and can still be played

  • Jagex account has multiple characters, ALL are not created by the Jagex account user, dispute arises, characters moved off the Jagex account and Jagex account disabled

  • Jagex account has one character, it is not created by the Jagex account user, dispute arises, character moved off the Jagex account and Jagex account disabled

Nope, people move about all the time, if you created the character you are all good

Hey Mod Steve, my former college roommate way back has the account recovery details of an account I own. Literally every detail. For that reason alone I can’t even play the account because I am scared to progress the account.

Let’s say I add that account to my current Jagex account which does have other accounts already imported. If he were to recover it (which he’s been able to do before as well as I’ve been able to do) what would happen to my Jagex account? I created the account but would I lose access to all of my other accounts? Or will it just be removed from my Jagex account and my other accounts are untouched?

I don’t know if he plays but that lingering thought is still there.

Once you have a Jagex account he can't recover it because there is no manual recovery route - all recovery is tied to the Jagex account user. He can raise a dispute, in which case we will carry out an investigation, and one possible outcome is that we transfer the character to him, if we believe he created the character.

BUT if you created it, any investigation should side with you. In the unlikely event that the character is moved, you'll still have access to all other characters you created via your Jagex account.

Hi Mod Stevew,

Long ago around 2003, a friend gave me his pure account for me to play RuneScape with him. He let me keep since I kept playing. There was probably 1 week playtime from him.

Will there be a risk converted to my jagex account? This was back when only the username and password was required and no email initially set, and no other payment details but mine.

We don't condone account sharing, but for our ownership investigation to kick in the creator would need to proactively contact us and dispute ownership - if they don't do that we will side with the current player and assume that the person playing the account NOW is the creator but has just moved - we assume good intent unless anyone challenges it!

If you did not create the account yourself then, going off the info Stevew posted, you may have the character removed from your Jagex account in the future if an ownership challenge is made by the original owner and this challenge is successful. There is literally nothing you can do about this because you did not create the account yourself. Basically you just have to hope the original owner never tries to claim it... And if they do try, you better hope that they don't provide (or Jagex doesn't find) sufficient evidence that they created it.

As per Stevew's post, your Jagex account is not in threat. Jagex accounts are only disabled if the offending character is the only character on that Jagex account.

Correct - we assume no foul play, if that is questioned, we'll take a look and try to reach a sensible outcome.

Brainlet misinformation answer, Stevew is saying there has to be a dispute over who owns the character and there's an investigation. Surely someone that's consistently been playing on the same IP for decades has the stronger claim than some random guy who might not even live at the place where the character was created. It's not just "lol someone else made your character get yo ass banned lmfao"

This, although you've phrased it in a way that I couldn't ;)

To be fair OP has probably been quite stung by this, they were gifted/shared/bought the account - and have now lost access, rules are rules but the guy's had a tough ride so I deliberately tried to position this as more an 'insight' than a 'smackdown'

One of the selling points made for Jagex accounts was the removal of human error through the old system. While it probably isn't extremely prevalent it does seem to happen. Out of curiosity what's the end goal? Once Jagex accounts become mandatory for all players will character disputes/support eventually just cease to exist?

Edit: Typos, clarification.

With over 20 years of account creation and over 300 million accounts created - it seems to me there will always be disputes that will arise, but Jagex accounts are a massive step towards stronger account security and go a long way to minimise the chances of human error and malicious recovery

What is the difference between the account recovery attempts we are used to and a "dispute"?

In short a move away from 'knowing info' and leaning more towards meta data held about the account - a factual data based review compared to an assumption based on what a person knows about an account - still not perfect, but more robust IMO. So answering the security question 'where were you born' (to which the answer 'hospital' is likely to score well) or knowing a historical password in a climate where data breaches/dox are common place - is now replaced with a more analytical view of factual data (geo/IP footprints and similar).

I've had a read and most of the comments seem to be players with opinions already dug in

While I am one of these people, it's not always from misinformation/misleading posts on reddit such as this one. I've had several bad experiences with Jagex support in the past, including losing a GIM which I created myself, to the point that I don't feel comfortable making any changes/upgrades that I'm not forced to do. I'm not sure that a question in a FAQ really addresses this, but I really want to see concrete steps to improve Jagex Support beyond moderators happening upon a reddit post of someone complaining.

While I strongly disagree with your comments about my colleagues in support, Jagex accounts are not developed by our Support team.

The 'Web team' (now known as Publishing Platform) developed this system and maintains it, Jagex Support might need to be contacted if there are technical issues but they've been doing a great job of that behind the scenes.

The overwhelming majority of players have a smooth experience and have quietly just upgraded and now gain all the additional security features players have been begging us for. Winter 2017 is no more.

As for this specific case, as Steve mentioned - the player had already spoken to our support team twice. The person who actually owned the account had a great experience of our support team - they got their account back and its now much more secure on a Jagex account. If you aren't buying / selling or sharing accounts that are disputed, you have nothing to worry about.
