This to me is all just another tool and an option in our arsenal as designers. It's not a new one, the main difference is it is invisible. Hydra ring drops in 3 pieces, Bludgeon has a similar structure and so on.

The key thing I like is variety - players have lots of options, some players are going to like this, some will prefer the alternative. In this case you can feel like you're always progressing towards the drop, in the normal system you're never closer!

It's good to me to have content that can appeal to different people :). The designer side is us being selective about where we want to apply a different system. I feel quite comfortable experimenting here as the rings aren't the only uniques the bosses drop.

Essentially, all this is to say that I agree with your take or that I at least understand it and that many people will share that view - just not everyone, as it's actually quite subjective.
