When I was seven years old, I first found out about RuneScape after watching a couple kids playing it in the public library. I immediately went home and began playing it, and I became addicted. My addiction for the game was so strong after a couple of years that my mom, probably in an attempt to just bond with me a bit, decided to play it too. And while I was some kid playing the game as inefficiently as possible, my mom, well, she knew what was up. She quickly flew by me in levels, despite the fact that I had literally like two or three years on her.
She would then go on to get her first 99, mining, while I was still sub-50s on all of my skills. She loved mining so much because it would just get her so much f*cking gold it was ridiculous. See, we were incredibly poor growing up, but my mom always told me that "While I can't get you everything you want in real life, in RuneScape, I'm going to make sure I can afford to get you ANYTHING you want". And she did, all the time. She would just funnel money into my account, only a few hundred thousand gold at a time, but when the rest of my bank is worth 50k, it feels like I'm rich.
And with all of that wealth that she amassed, she started leveling her skills at an exponential rate. Her next 99 would be smithing, rather obviously, but then came Farming.
See, my mom in real life was in love with the idea of gardening, we always had a garden growing, just for her own enjoyment. So when she realized she could farm in game too, it changed things. And she would do her farm runs every day, and it became her new passion. Move over, mining. Farming is my new best friend.
And she would keep that up for years, every day, first thing she'd do when she logged on, and last thing she did, was a farm run.
In 2015, we found out that she had cancer, and it was in its late stages. She would go in for radiation treatments, and chemotherapy, and while I'm sure it slowed things down, it didn't stop it. And she would suffer as a result. But the one thing she still did every day, despite having no strength, would be to hop onto RuneScape and do her farm runs and talk to her clan mates about her situation. Right at the end of 2015, she passed away.
At this point, I had been taking a pretty large break from RuneScape, but as of recently I came back, mostly to OSRS. But one of the first things I did was log onto her RS3 account to just check on things. And there she was, standing in Edgeville bank as usual, with her inventory already set up for her next farm run that she would have done.
Her birthday is November 2nd, and I'm going to make sure to do my farm runs. I hope you guys do too.
EDIT: I've seen a lot of people asking for some sort of group harvest on the 2nd. I wasn't planning on doing something like this, but since there's some sort of want for it, I'll be happy to, in memory of my mom. Thing is, November 2nd is also Extra Life, which is a charity 24-hour livestream, and I'll be participating with a bunch of friends, with the goal of getting donations for childrens hospitals. So how about we bring some real life good out of this? If you can stream for Extra Life, or any other organization dedicated for charity, come join us, and we'll do a mass farm run on November 2nd!
