I honestly feel 4.0 is going to introduce a new engine.

Or at least tremendously revamped.

The hint's have been there. Chris mentioned they were designing it to compete with 'Diablo 4' which we all thought was going to be announced. They mentioned the character model rework which is extensive.

They removed dx9 support this league also, which pushes the player base closer to having the requirements for a new engine.

Eventually, engines, no matter how much you do to update it, become long in the tooth and need to be rebuilt from the ground up. GGG will hit a wall at some point with their current engine. It's already showing at times when we get so many bugs in a new league that shouldn't have been.

Edit: Chris responded, no new engine, but still many engine improvements.

We have been replacing the engine piece by piece for a few years ago, and this will continue into the future. There is no "new engine", because the current one is becoming the new one in a modular way so that players can see the benefits immediately. We feel this is a lot better than working on it for several years and releasing it in one go.

There are lots of important changes still to come in 2019. For example, we're working on getting it so that the engine never needs to wait for any data in order to be able to draw frames, so there should never be any type of hitching or concern about preloading.
