Learn The History Behind Taego's Prison

Hugging the rugged cliffs on the coast of Taego is the fearsome Hosan Prison. Known to be a fortress designed to hold top level criminals. Within its walls an unbridled riot took place among the prisoners that would go down in Battlegrounds infamy. 

Enter Kangjae Ma, an executioner for the South Korean mob. He used a car bomb to take out an intended target, and the wrong person ended up dead. Ma was arrested and sentenced to serve time in Hosan. Considering his long list of successful hits, he had good reason to get very comfortable in his new home, the notorious C-block, reserved for the most violent offenders.      

Ma’s error was a serious offense to his former employer and the only punishment they would accept was death. Though he was tucked away in a high security prison, Ma was not out of reach for the Mob who wanted him dead. It was a tranquil Christmas Day when without warning, every cell in Ma’s block opened. There was an eerie silence as the doors squealed open. A promise was made that the one who takes out Ma would be rewarded with a hefty payday. Now the fuse was lit.

What happened next was an explosion of a purely primal battle royale for Ma’s head.

Every moment of the terrifying brutality was captured on the prison’s security cameras including the moment where Ma managed to fight off an entire block of attackers.

In the chaos, Ma managed to escape Hosan with the ultimate prize, a tape from the security office containing the gruesome footage. Copies of this tape came to be known as “The Gulag Tapes.”
