Meet Won Kim

Interview With Escape To Summer Sweepstakes Artist

To create a one of a kind art piece dedicated to our new map Taego, we turned to the multi-talented Won Kim a.k.a ReviseCMW. Born in Korea, raised in Chicago, Won is not only a prolific artist, he’s also an accomplished chef, restaurateur and DJ. Won’s murals can be found all over Chicago including at his two southside restaurants. When it comes to food, Won is well versed, doing everything from his own takes on fried chicken and pizza to Polish/ Korean fusion.

Won contracted Covid early in the pandemic and once he recovered, he got to work helping his community. Like everywhere else in the country, his neighborhood of Bridgeport was in crisis. Won transformed part of his business to ensure those going hungry could get a meal and his patrons could help contribute to that cause. Now that the darkest days of the pandemic are behind us, Won is back in action with his restaurants opened again and even getting back into the DJ booth.

His passion and devotion to his community and his craft is what made Won such an obvious choice for the Escape To Summer Sweepstakes art activation.

We were on site in Chicago with Won while he was creating the Taego piece. In that time we got to capture him creating this incredible artwork and talk with him about PUBG, art and more.

PUBG: How did PUBG become one of your games of choice?

Won Kim: I don’t have a ton of time to game, but when I do, I want something that’s never going to be the same thing twice. I’m a big film nerd and when I heard there was a game developer who was inspired by the Battle Royale movie I was curious. I loved that movie and wanted to know how you turn that into a game. I also think having a restaurant in Chicago is a lot like battle royale. It’s a big city, lots of amazing food, it gets very cutthroat out there, but also delicious. Same thing with art, you have to be willing to adapt, get out of your comfort zone, that’s the only way to survive.

PUB: What is it about PUBG that stands out to you compared to other BR games?

WK: PUBG is just more relatable for me. Other BR games are these amazing fantasies but I feel like they are made purely for gaming’s sake. I can tell PUBG was inspired by a lot of elements outside of gaming. There’s a raw experience you’re not going to get anywhere else.

PUBG: How do you think you would do in a real life battle royale?

WK: I mean I know my way around a frying pan so that would be my melee weapon of choice so I might be able to take out someone that way. However I’m pretty sure I would get iced immediately because I would insist on wearing my apron which is not good for running.

PUBG: Let’s say you won that battle royale, what kind of chicken dinner would you request as the winner winner?

WK: Organic, cage free chicken prepared by Thomas Keller. A simple roast with seasonal veggies roasted together so that I get that good au jus action. Trussed properly, yes, trussed, GTS for all you DIY chefs out there. Topped off with smoked Maldon salt for seasoning, served on a floral, porcelain plate. I would take one bite out of the wing and then chuck all of it and go get a burger just to spite the sick individuals who put me in a battle royale to begin with.

PUBG: Let’s talk about this Taego art piece. What made you excited about this project? What aspects of Taego inspired you?

WK: I was just happy PUBG asked a Korean guy to do an art piece for a Korean map. It was really cool to get to work with the Korean lettering, definitely a new experience for me. The red leaves, the 80’s time period, these were my big influences working on the piece. When I think 80’s, I think of these hyper-saturated blues and pinks, I think pop art. I wanted it to be loud and also evoke some of the amazing art styles of that decade.

The finished product is a one of a kind ode to the brand new Taego map and YOU have a chance to win it! Start with your PUBG Account and then log on to the official Escape To Summer Sweepstakes Page. Follow Won on Instagram (@revisecmw) to see more of his amazing art!
