[2023] what happend to PUBG

I started playing this game when it very first came out and I played for 2 or 3 years after that. I was always able to run the game smoothly at 60fps on my PC.

Now in 2023 I've been feeling like the pubg gameplay I used to love. So far I've played a handful of matches and my PC is struggling to maintain 60fps with settings turned down to very low. Usually it just drops and bounces between 40 and 50fps. It also seems super laggy when loading into the main menu screen after matches. My internet perfect I checked and as far as my PC it's not the newest rig out there but I can run ANY other game at medium/high setting with smooth 60fps.

Is there maybe a graphical update since it went free to play that makes the game more demanding? Is the game even buggier than it was before? I'm just trying to understand why this game of all games won't run smoothly
