I saw a post the other day where someone said M24 didn't reliably knock Tier 1/2 helmets. I dismissed it as when I was last playing consistently and the Kar98 and M24 were the only world-spawn snipers in the game, and the M24's tradeoff was that it would knock but not destroy a Level 2 helmet. I've seen my share of M24 knocks with one hit lately as well, so I know it happens, however....

Yesterday I was playing a game of squads with friends and we had hot dropped. I started a fight with a squard and eventually got rushed in a 4v1 and died, however the beginning of the fight felt weird to me so I went to look up more info about it.

I fired a total of two shots before I died, both with an M24. I had 50% accuracy, and the only damage I did was a headshot according to pubglookup. I physically saw them in a Level 2 helmet, they didn't have a tier 3 - and a plane hadn't dropped a crate in the area we hot dropped in.

It said I only did 84 damage to them and I did not knock them. The engagement was about 65 meters - a few buildings away total.

Is this a thing now? I briefly looked through patch notes but didn't find anything that stated this explicitly.

Both K9 and M24 will always headshot 1 shot a lvl 1 and 2 helmet. Neckshots however, deal lower damage and will not knock out the player. The player will still lose their helmet durability and you may see them lose a helmet after a neck shot! :)

Curious why a neck show deducts from helmet durability?

Game design / balancing decision. The way I see it, having it not do that would make it unrewarding / unfair even. Hitting the neck at least brings some progress towards getting a knock by lowering down the durability or breaking the helmet which opens up the enemy to a knock more. The helmet durability loss is a decent balancing middleground between having it do nothing and acting like a headshot.
