Survive Like A GirlBoss

VikingPrincess Talk GirlBoss Tournaments

The perception of who gamers are and what they look like is changing rapidly in today’s climate where diversity and inclusion are being celebrated. We here at PUBG are excited to celebrate those values with our new Partners at GirlBoss. When it comes to competitive gaming, men are perceived to dominate the scene and GirlBoss is flipping that narrative by creating a PUBG tournament space designed for and completely by women.

The rules are straight forward, women run the show, GirlBoss teams must be helmed by captains who are women. These captains can recruit anyone to play on their teams, including men. These tournaments operate by a unique ruleset to ensure maximum good times for all participants and the audience. Tonight at 9pm EST, they are rounding up competitors for a duos tournament with PUBG Funko Pops on the line. We encourage you to tune in and see for yourself.

We caught up with GirlBoss event founder Tine Gulbrandsen a.k.a VikingPrincess to talk more about what it takes to put something like this together.

PUBG: How did GirlBoss get started and what makes your events stand out?

VikingPrincess: The event was started in April 2019 by myself (VikingPrincess) and my friend EricaAmerica. We wanted to do a community event, but wanted to make sure that our female friends felt safe and invited to play without being dominated by male players. We also wanted to set it up in a way that took away as much stress and intimidation as possible. We therefore follow a unique score system that makes it possible for every player to do well, even if they are not getting the most kills.

PUBG: What was it like launching your first event? How has GirlBoss evolved since then?

VikingPrincess: When we opened the registration for the first tournament, it filled within 6 days! We couldn’t believe it! It was clear that there was a great need for a female-focused tournament. We immediately decided to make it a monthly event. The following months we would fill the tournament within an hour of opening registration, and with long waitlists every month! In February 2020 we decided to expand the tournament and include a monthly squad tournament as well. Through the year of GirlBoss we have seen a large increase in the participation of female players in larger PUBG tournaments like PCS. 90% of the women competing in PCS season 1 and 2 started their competitive journey with GirlBoss.

Big thank you to VikingPrincess for taking the time to chat and we hope to see all of you watching tonight’s tournament!
