Glass changes happened WAY before 1.0.
OP is showing very early builds of the game, right after it went EA.
They changed it for some reason, I think around the ADAMS update and made glass translucent but not transparent, and unbreakable. It was awful. 1.0 changed it a lot for the better, but it's still not as cool as early build attempts.
The glass physics at the time were tied to… I believe it was PhysX, and there was some kind of engine bug where if the glass shattered a certain way, it would cause a crash :(
