| 9s | Hoops Arena and the centerpiece of an |
| 11s | in-game event we're calling the block |
| 12s | party earlier this season we brought |
| 14s | Sovereign Heights to soccer playlists |
| 16s | and today it's getting a street ball |
| 18s | makeover I'm here with Josh Watson and |
| 20s | Adam Beckwith to talk about the new |
| 21s | Arena thanks for joining me guys thanks |
| 23s | for having me happy to be here Adam I |
| 25s | know we have a lot of City Arenas in |
| 27s | rocket League already but we've been |
| 28s | toying with the idea of doing a Hoops |
| 30s | Urban arena for quite some time now |
| 32s | isn't that right can you talk about some |
| 34s | of the differences there might be |
| 35s | between the block and our first Hoops |
| 37s | Arena duncast yeah so there aren't any |
| 39s | differences aside from the environment |
| 41s | and I think we always knew that we |
| 42s | wanted a street version I think we |
| 43s | actually had the idea dating back to |
| 45s | when we were developing this game mode |
| 46s | so uh my brother Ben works here as well |
| 48s | back in 2017 he had actually created a |
| 51s | blockout version of this environment and |
| 53s | the way that kind of works is we'll go |
| 54s | into the pre-existing map and in this |
| 55s | case it's dunk house and we'll pull all |
| 58s | the gameplay elements out of there such |
| 59s | as like the Cruise pads the player |
| 61s | starts the goals and we'll bring that |
| 63s | into a brand new empty environment and |
| 65s | then we'll then at that point we'll |
| 66s | block everything out and then we'll |
| 68s | build the environment around all that |
| 70s | stuff so it's like five years later it's |
| 71s | cool to see it finally come to life can |
| 73s | you talk a little bit about what |
| 74s | inspired your work on the Block in |
| 77s | Sovereign heights yeah so uh I think a |
| 79s | lot of the influences came from |
| 80s | obviously New York but that Brooklyn |
| 82s | Bridge in the background let's bring |
| 83s | some of that we wanted to combine a lot |
| 85s | of our a lot of the New York feel along |
| 87s | with San Diego because such a big part |
| 89s | of our history so the sign that you see |
| 90s | just outside the Arenas is Sovereign |
| 92s | Heights on it we pulled that from the |
| 94s | signs you'll see around San Diego the |
| 96s | signs that say Gas Lamp normal Heights |
| 98s | Hillcrest but then anything I was doing |
| 100s | at the time anything I was watching |
| 101s | anything I was playing I would kind of |
| 102s | like pause and just kind of look around |
| 104s | to see if there's anything I can pull |
| 105s | and take inspiration from and I would |
| 107s | have about maybe 20 to 30 tabs open on |
| 110s | my browser so Josh why is now a good |
| 113s | time to bring a new hoop Serena into |
| 115s | rocket League this is the second one |
| 116s | that we've ever done and I know the |
| 118s | Hoops Community is going to be super |
| 119s | stoked for it when they check it out |
| 120s | yeah you know when I first saw Adam and |
| 122s | Ben's Arena I I fell in love with it and |
| 125s | we just knew the community was going to |
| 127s | fall in love with it too so from there |
| 129s | it was just about finding the right time |
| 130s | to bring it into the game and uh with |
| 132s | season eight and the Street theme it was |
| 135s | sort of a match made in heaven so |
| 137s | following the block do you think you're |
| 138s | going to see any new Arenas or Arena |
| 140s | variants for extra modes in the near |
| 142s | future you know we don't have anything |
| 143s | planned currently but um as long as |
| 146s | there's a community of people who are |
| 147s | interested in those modes and they want |
| 149s | to play it and they want the support |
| 150s | we're always listening we're always |
| 153s | engaging feedback I don't have to tell |
| 155s | you so |
| 156s | um it's really about is it going to be |
| 159s | the right fit and the right feel for a |
| 161s | theme or a season and you know you never |
| 164s | know anything's possible |
| 166s | oh and speaking of community feedback |
| 168s | one thing we hear from players a lot is |
| 169s | they really like to see grass or tear |
| 171s | fields in our Arenas I know that was the |
| 173s | driving force behind us putting Turf |
| 176s | into Sovereign Heights right absolutely |
| 178s | yeah we know there's a desire for more |
| 180s | grass Maps so I got to work with Eric |
| 183s | Micah on the environment team to bring |
| 186s | sort of a new grass Tech sort of a |
| 188s | shorter grass to this Arena so it feels |
| 191s | like a you know one of those Turf Arenas |
| 193s | that you might see in uh downtown London |
| 196s | or some of the favelas in Brazil so yeah |
| 199s | speaking of building environments for |
| 201s | Arenas I think one thing our players |
| 202s | love to dig into and explore are all the |
| 205s | different Easter eggs we put into our |
| 206s | Arenas in rocket League so are there any |
| 209s | Easter eggs in the block or Sovereign |
| 210s | Heights the players haven't found yet or |
| 212s | they don't really understand the meaning |
| 213s | of I'm pretty sure they found them all |
| 216s | yeah I don't think they quite understand |
| 217s | what the context of all them are and one |
| 219s | of them is the cracker Factory building |
| 220s | that one is a callback to our very first |
| 222s | office that we had in San Diego in 2009 |
| 224s | and any other favorites that you have I |
| 227s | always love when I can get my dog in |
| 228s | there |
| 229s | so taking a look at the neighborhood |
| 230s | that is Sovereign Heights how does that |
| 232s | fit in with the larger Rock of the |
| 233s | universe yeah so Following season seven |
| 236s | we're coming out of this big opulent |
| 238s | celebration in Utopia Coliseum and so |
| 241s | when we were looking at Sovereign |
| 242s | Heights and the neighborhood there we're |
| 244s | trying to flesh out what are the |
| 245s | inhabitants of this place and what do |
| 247s | they care about and that led us to |
| 249s | Sovereign crew which is this group of |
| 251s | Street artists who care deeply about the |
| 254s | roots of the sport so when we're looking |
| 256s | at season eight we really wanted to say |
| 258s | soccer really belongs to the street so |
| 261s | do you think that exploring that |
| 263s | connective tissue between seasons and |
| 265s | building up the world more is that |
| 267s | something that we're going to try and do |
| 268s | more and more with New Seasons as they |
| 270s | come up yeah absolutely you know when we |
| 272s | look at all of these Arenas uh we think |
| 274s | there's so much story to tell like the |
| 276s | world is so interesting and unique and |
| 279s | so anytime that we can tie that into a |
| 281s | season and make it feel really good |
| 283s | um we're always going to take advantage |
| 285s | of it so Adam any any Insider |
