The point isn't that yak tracks are bad events or that the top events are better, its that you need variety.
If they only release one type of event it gets stale no matter what. Throwing in an occasional winter weekend type event and holding of on the yak track for a few months not only changes it up but makes you look forward to the yak track more when it returns after being gone for a while. Sure, maybe some of those events aren't the best examples but the other half is pretty beloved and would be well received when it hasn't been done for so many years.
I mentioned this in another thread, but there are other kinds of events coming as well as Yak Track and Double XP LIVE events. Halloween is in our sights, and this Holiday is definitely something we're thinking about.
We're also putting some serious work into our existing events as well - Yak Track is probably a good example of this where we've continually tried to improve the rewards through to the tasks (especially with the new lore moments in this one). We'd love to hear if you are feeling the effects of it or not.
