I mean I’m no game developer or anything, but you’re telling me that they’re letting an unintended bug that seems like an easy fix be in the game for 4 months until they even look at it? That seems ridiculous. I’m definitely biased because I could really use the boosts for the diaries on my alt right now and it seems extremely unfair that I can’t do what every other player has had access to, just because I chose an unfortunate time to do the diaries.
Just to provide some context, because of the sheer number of achievements that've been added in recent years and peculiar conditions they need to check, we reached the limit of how much achievement data our scripting engine can process, and had to recreate every achievement in an engine-cached format for efficiency and to support continued addition of achievements for game content.
Converting this data, extending the achievement engine to support some very quirky achievement conditions, and adapting the achievement interface to pull data from the achievement interface took about a year behind the scenes.
The fruit of that labor means the achievement processing code is now in-engine for efficiency and we can more freely add achievements in game content releases. (Where previously the fully-scripted system was at its limit.)
The necessary drawback of that is if we need to change the logic for parsing achievements, that's an engine change.
For what it's worth Mod Jenesis already stepped up and made the fix to make achievement skill prereqs "soft" (effectively make the engine ignore those prereqs because you can boost them, but still return the requirement data so the achievement interface can display them) a few weeks ago.
All going well in engine code review, testing and deployment (that's a lot of ifs), it should release with the next full stack engine build, which is currently scheduled to be February.
We don't update the game engine anywhere nearly as often as we do game content updates.
Engine releases are on a much less frequent release schedule than our weekly game updates.
Full stack (client as well as server, as is necessary in this case) builds release even less frequently due to their complexity and the coordination necessary to get them online and propagated to all servers.
The engine is much more foundational than the scripted game layer on top and supports a huge variety of platforms (the number of edge cases and platform builds that need to be tested against each time we release a new engine is simply staggering), so we have to be a lot more rigorous in reviewing and releasing engine updates, and that takes time and the work of a lot of different people.
As for quest requirements being "hard" (non-boostable), we have no intention of going back to soft skill quest requirements.
The inconsistent manner in which quest requirements were enforced before, and could fluctuate during a quest, created loads of content bugs, issues for players, and impacted content unlocked by those quests. Further complicated by new features we now need to support like Nastroth being able to reset a bunch of quests alongside Defence and skill pure resets.
RuneScape is a game loaded with weird and wonderful edge cases - so much so that we have to be quite limited in the number of achievements we expose to Steam because we do some unconventional things as standard - like achievements that routinely get more requirements added to them, re-lock and take content away from you, like completionist capes.
I appreciate this information doesn't help you in the short term, but the work's been done and we just have to ride out the process. If you can't wait for February to complete certain achievements, I'd suggest leveling up the necessary skills in the meantime.
Certainly that's the approach I've been taking (having comped two accounts over the years, I'm now enjoying leveling up a third, and finding the hard quest skill reqs to be helpful in structuring my levelling strategy).
That’s fair. As I said, I’m no developer, so I have(/had) no idea what scope of work it would take to fix this. I didn’t realize it would take a big engine project to fix. I appreciate the info and response though! It’s always nice to have a jmod reply to comments like my own, just to give some more info (even if it’s only a little) on what’s going on and that you guys are aware and have a plan in the works to resolve it
I'm glad I was able to help and I hope it provides some reassurance.
I also hope you have a merry festive season! Once the holidays are behind us and we're back to full capacity, I'm sure January will fly by. Thank you for your patience in the meantime. :)
Bit unrelated but as you mentioned quests requirements, is there any chance "Horror from the Deep" can get Bar Crawl as one of its requirements? Its already a hidden hard requirement to do the quest, and Bar Crawl is in the quest list as a miniquest now.
Potentially giving Missing My Mummy a Garden of Tranquility and the skills for 100% mummy restoration as suggested requirements too, mostly because restoring Senliten fully is required for 3 quests.
Technically Larrissa tells the player about Gunjornn at a stage during Horror from the Deep, so you'd never get that dialogue if Bar Crawl was a hard requirement. But if you're okay with that, sure.
Please could you submit those two items as separate bug reports, if you haven't already?
In order to fix live issues, we need to have a bug report to track through QA and release.
I'll keep an eye out for those bug reports the next time I'm allowed a bugfixing day. (Which'll be in the new year.)
I sure will
When I said hard requirement I meant not to start, but its hard requirement to finish the quest so ideally the game should be upfront about it.
<3
Yeah, that's why Bar Crawl isn't currently listed as a requirement. :) The requirements listed for a quest are what you have to complete in order to get past the quest accept screen.
While Bar Crawl is currently something you need to complete the quest, but you don't need it to start the quest.
But certainly could make Bar Crawl required to start Horror from the Deep if that's preferred.
