9s a couple of years ago we conceived the
10s idea to release a successor to cordova's
13s engine 2. the big players in the game at
15s the moment were the elder gods but they
17s can't just roll in and take the elder
19s god eggs so we needed to find generals
20s for them
21s so you had kerapak the dragonkin who had
24s just brought anachronia forward in time
26s with the needle
28s then we had the older god when so we
30s brought in a new creature we hadn't
32s really ever seen before an arc glacial
36s then we had to look at fall
39s had a look through old school's inferno
42s and it just made sense to bring in zakal
45s zuk
46s so we figured why not pay homage to that
49s and bring him into the runescape world
53s creating the audio for the zekko front
54s was so much fun i decided to call upon
57s forth the most epic voices in jagex and
60s do a chant recording session right here
62s in the studio
70s i also asked my good friend rob to
72s record my guitar parts for the track and
74s when we put that all together it was
76s such a great sounding piece of music and
79s you know really pleased with how that
80s eventually turned out

88s obviously environments are a really big
91s part of your screen when you play right
93s you have your character and everything
94s around you is environment
98s the main things that we try to do with
99s that is just like really convey the mood
102s and the tone that we want players to
104s feel at that point first discussions

106s story drafts will be written we'll know
109s a rough idea of what the location is
111s that we need so then to start out
113s concept art we'll make a bunch of
114s different mood paintings for it from
116s that mood art then we make a rough white
119s box that has the layout we take that
121s translate the concept in a rough layout
124s then concept art will paint over that
125s again and then we will translate that
127s into the final environment
132s the storyline really kicked into high
133s gear with as an address quest that's
134s where like as an address quest battle of
137s the monolith city of centisten leads
138s directly into the other god wars dungeon
140s and it you know the pace really starts
142s to pick up with the storyline at that
143s point and that's what that was the most
144s exciting thing about it was we've never
146s really told a story
147s that was so integrated before in
150s runescape in the past like often when a
151s storyline has continued it's been well
153s there's a you know there's a piece of
154s story a year later six months later two
156s years later the next part of the story
158s will happen and in the meantime other
159s stuff was happening we've never really
160s told such a large scale story over such
163s a short space of time before
166s so the city of cintiston being a very
168s holy place and of course we've got the
169s cathedral located at its very heart what
172s i definitely wanted to do with this was
175s record uh what we call a basso profundo
177s or an activist this is someone who has
179s an incredibly low natural vocal range
182s and i got in touch with a guy called
184s eric holloway and eric could really hit
186s those low notes and when we put him in
188s the game his singing just resonated
190s through the entire city
198s i tend to listen to a lot of music as
200s well so for aya i was just listening to
203s sad indian playlists on repeat because i
205s wanted to make myself sad to try and get
207s to make get that feeling into the
209s environment and then for boss arenas i
212s will listen to the bloodborne soundtrack
213s or something like that
219s when we first received the concept art
221s for crosses we instantly thought wow
223s what a kind of like weird and icky
225s creature and so we instantly thought
227s like what would his movement sound like
228s bought some celery bought some peppers
230s and i easily went into the studio and
232s kind of was kind of breaking him up to
234s try and reflect and to try and imitate
237s that kind of awkward bone cracking
239s movement that crosses has
262s we also went to pig farms and recorded
264s pigs and
266s went down to a local park and recorded a
267s swing these eventually became crosses
269s streaks and screams

299s lots of great va for all of our
301s important characters for instance in the
303s glacial front we recorded as an addrem
306s giving helpful information to the player
308s whilst they're fighting this helps
310s really well not just in terms of
312s having great va but also in terms of
314s accessibility for our players as well
316s they're depleting your divine energy get
319s up keep fighting there are big tensions
322s right now on gilano sarah doman and
324s zamarak started a fight at the battle of
326s lumbridge
327s technically saradomin won that fight but
329s zamarak has restored himself since then
331s and
332s that fight got interrupted by cisco's
335s endgame and then that fight got
336s interrupted again by the god wars and
339s the threat of the elder god wars but
340s they never actually resolved it like
341s it's still they still hate each other
343s they both still want to control gillan
344s or i can't imagine that they're done
346s right
348s it wouldn't be a godless dungeon if we
350s weren't working on a fifth boss to
352s accompany the four fronts for goddess
354s dungeon one we had next for god was
356s dungeon two we had telos and four
359s elder god was dungeon
361s we're working on something that is as
363s innovative
364s as the forefronts combined you'd think
367s that after dealing with a threat that
369s threatens to destroy all of the universe
371s i think maybe we could take a break and
373s just relax a little bit
375s the threats aren't over the story's not
