Today our subreddit reached a huge milestone: 300,000 subscribers! It's crazy to think we've doubled in size within the last 3 years. From humble beginnings back in 2009, /r/runescape has become the meeting point of a diverse community of players from all around the world, with more than half a million unique visitors and 15 million page views every month.

Thank you

What happens in our corner on Reddit would not be possible without you. We would like to thank everyone who participates in discussions, answers questions, and provides valuable information and advice to fellow players. We appreciate the prolific creators of fan art, memes, and game suggestions. We acknowledge the efforts and dedication of our past moderators, who helped the subreddit grow. Last but not least, we would like to extend our gratitude to Jagex Staff for their continued participation in this unique community. We are very proud of the role /r/runescape has had in shaping and driving the game we all love.

This is where we are today. But let's not forget how we got here. I would like to take you on a trip down the memory lane. Let's start way back...

Timeline

  • Upon noticing there is no subreddit with this name, /r/runescape is created on the 20th of April, 2009, by an ordinary guy named Beltran22. But things take a while to spin up...

  • The first post submitted to /r/runescape appears in July 2009, titled "Free Runescape Stat Changer". Sounds legit... (it wasn't.)

  • The first game update newspost linked in /r/runescape is the release announcement of the "Blood Runs Deep" quest in December 2009.

  • Soon, a community starts to build. A returning player makes their first advice-seeking post in 2010, and the first outreach from a user livestreaming RuneScape on Twitch is submitted in 2011.

  • Mod Dark is the first Jagex Moderator to join /r/runescape, unofficially at the start. As of 2022, he's an engine developer at Jagex, and is still active in the subreddit!

  • In August 2012, we reach the milestone of 10,000 subscribers. At that point we are already in the top one thousand largest communities on Reddit.

  • In September 2012, Mod Mike becomes the first new community manager introduced in /r/runescape. By then, developers Mod Dark, Mod Sabre, Mod Timo, and Mod Sushi_Pi already browse the subreddit and participate in discussions. Very soon, the familiar golden crown flair is established.

  • Mod Slayer joins the subreddit in 2013, beginning the era of steady growth, and increasing Jagex's engagement in our community.

  • Recurring sticky threads, including the "Silly Question Sunday" and the "ProTip Tuesday", first launch in 2014.

  • 'Reddit' friends chat opens in-game in 2014, replacing older Reddit-focused fc's. Come and visit us!

  • The first of many TL;DW's, "Elf City Batch 2 Teaser Livestream", is posted in November 2014. The tradition of written summaries was started by Suity, and continues to this day thanks to Rubic.

  • A major graphical overhaul of the subreddit happens in 2014, updating the older RS2-based theme to the modern dark blue style used by RuneScape 3.

  • In January 2015, /r/runescape becomes an official Jagex-approved fansite. The subreddit is linked for the first time on the RuneScape website.

  • In July 2015, we reach the milestone of 50,000 subscribers.

  • Beginning in January 2016, Mod Shauny takes /r/runescape by storm. His tenure in our community lasted until October 2019.

  • The /r/runescape Discord server - https://discord.gg/runescape - is created in January 2016, more than a year before Jagex launch the official RuneScape Discord server.

  • The current top post of all time in our subreddit, "RS3 Vs OSRS" is submitted in April 2017.

  • In November 2017, we reach the milestone of 100,000 subscribers.

  • The /r/runescape moderators attended the RuneFest on a few occasions, including in 2017, when a special RuneFest attendee flair was available thanks to partnership with Jagex.

  • Redesigned layout of Reddit is launched in 2018, bringing new challenges for us, but also new features, such as mobile app support, poll posts, and live chat threads. Today, majority of our visitors use the new Reddit layout.

  • In December 2019, we reach the milestone of 200,000 subscribers. Up to that time, limited flair was available at 10k, 20k, 30k, 40k, 50k, 60k, 80k, 90k, 100k, 150k, and 200k subscribers.

  • Mod Hooli becomes our current lead community manager in June 2020. Over the last decade, we've welcomed nearly 200 J-Mods to the subreddit.

  • More than 100k unique visitors access /r/runescape on the first day of the infamous Login Lockout in March 2021.

  • Following temporary theme changes for major RuneScape updates such as Menaphos, Anachronia, and Archaeology, the subreddit's theme is updated again for the release of Elder God Wars in 2021.

And here we are: 300,000 subscribers. If you are new here - welcome! We're happy to have you onboard. If you haven't joined the subreddit yet, please do.

Okay, enough with the soppy. In closing, as you can probably expect, the 300k subscribers flair is now available for a limited time. Grab it while it's hot.

Thank you for everything,

the /r/runescape Team
