Hot on the heels of Mining & Smithing we're looking to rework the comp cape. Stage 1 of this is an in-game survey which is now live. Get in and vote!

You'll see two versions of the poll, but you'll only be able to answer one of them, as one is accessible to people who've ever comped and the other is accessible to people who've never comped. The questions are the same in both surveys.

A devblog which explains the point of the survey and the project in more detail can be found here: Comp cape devblog

I think you should really add another survey for people close to completionist. I'm not at comp yet personally, but at the moment, I only require about 5 and a half levels in slayer and then I've got it; shouldn't people that have clearly been actively hunting it for some time, or had it before have a bigger say than the people that have yet to make a full attempt at completionist?

I agree, but that's incredibly difficult for us to judge by looking at your account.

I've noticed in the devblog that they've mentioned certain requirements that some players either can't or won't get. I can somehow understand having an issue with not being able to get a requirement necessary for comp for whatever reason, whether it be because the content you need to complete is too demanding for the computer you have, or maybe if you're a physically disabled player that is disadvantaged compared to other able bodied players that can use keybinds more quickly and effectively for harder content, or maybe you're colourblind and that prevents you from being able to do phase 5 of Telos because you can't distinguish between which beam is which. Accomodating for players with these kinds of limitations is acceptable, and should even be expected to ensure that all RuneScape content is as accessible as it can be to as many different kinds of players without harming the integrity of the content.

However, players that won't complete content should not be a concern. If they don't want to do the requirements but still want the capes, then that's their problem, not anyone elses. It's absurd, and even insulting to players that are comped, whether they be comped for PvM or completionism, to accommodate for players that simply don't want to complete difficult requirements. It's downright lazy, and absolute bullshit. I have a feeling that the issue of players not wanting to complete requirements is aimed at the reaper requirement. If you want a PvM Cape to be introduced, then it's only appropriate that Reaper remains a requirement for the PvM Cape, including group bosses. Getting just 1 kill on each boss is not hard. It's quicker to do than getting a 99. "Hard" bosses should not be removed as a requirement. If you want a PvM Cape, you should try and get at least 1 kill each on hard bosses. You shouldn't be allowed to get a PvM Cape just because you're too lazy and impatient to learn how to kill a hard boss just once. It is a PvM Cape after all. If you haven't spent the time to learn hard bosses, you shouldn't be able to get a PvM Cape. And "forced" group bosses should not be removed from reaper either. People complain that it's difficult to find teams willing to take them on, but that's simply not true. Many friends chats and discords that deal in group bosses do have high requirements, however they aren't the only sources of teams for group bosses. It's significantly easier and more relaxed finding teams by joining a PvM focused clan. Clans are often well organised, do regular group bosses, are significantly more relaxed about requirements, and often hold regular teaching sessions. There are lots of clans that take people with only 80+ stats to bosses like raids, Nex, AoD, elite dungeons and Vorago. Sometimes even Solak. AoD and Vorago are even massable. It's genuinely not hard finding teams willing to take on first timers, people just give up too easily or don't bother looking in other viable places for teams willing to take them on. If you want a PvM Cape, you should have to get at least one kill on group bosses. If you're not willing to find a team that is relaxed about it's requirements (there's a plentiful supply), then you shouldn't be able to get a PvM Cape. Also, it's a multiplayer game. Group content is fundamental to that aspect of the game.

This is why I worded it as "can't or won't" so we don't have to get into an argument about whether a given reason "counts" as not being able to. Say there's a player who says they have social anxiety and as such can't do the voice chat necessary to get boss kills. A lot of players will mock this and say "just do it" which makes it seem like they "won't" do the accomplishment, whereas they would say that they "can't" do the accomplishment.

I don't see any practical way to distinguish between the two in practice.

If we were just going to do it whatever we wouldn't bother to do the poll. It was a pain in the ass.

Not that I agree with Wacky over there or with the statement I'm posing next, but, it could be to just cover your ass regardless of the pain it caused to it.

It doesn't cover it though. If I wanted to cover it, we'd do a guaranteed content poll because then no matter what the outcome, it "wasn't our fault".

The reason we've done it in the way we've done it is that we want an honest appraisal of current opinion on the subject so we can work from that.
