Great appreciation and respect goes out to all the J-mods who put time and effort into maintaining Runescape 3.

It’s been a crazy ride through hundreds (if not thousands) of updates over the years, from patch notes to new bosses, to new skilling content. The game itself has seen many highs and many lows; one being the state at which RS3 is at now with declining player base and the constant bombarding of micro-transaction (MTX) promotions. We know this is a problem and we know you know it too.

Corporate, investors, and MTX financiers are all to blame for the state that the game has been thrown into. This is a game that is meant to turn a profit by charging a membership fee to provide content that your audience ACTUALLY WANT to consume. Not by targeting a small audience of fiscally-irresponsible individuals for their parents’ life savings. All that this accomplishes is short-run gains and long-run losses, of which they are suffering the consequences of now. But....they know this too and are just postponing the inevitable. Fukong are in serious debt and are middle of a game integrity crisis with the English Parliment. From here on out, MTX promos will only get more overpowered to overcompensate. They are doing whatever it takes to skim off every dime that they can before selling off their biggest revenue producer.

This game, the game that has captured the imagination and attention of millions for almost two decades. It’s become a blessing and a curse to be such a long-running successful video game. Investors and corporations have abused the trust of their consumers and have changed the way that the game is played; from work-for-your-wealth to pay-to-win.

You guys, the J-mods, are the ones behind Runescape’s true success. You guys are the ones that continue to make the game still playable for the few of us still left. For that, you all deserve a golden gnome award. You come in every day to work, put up all of the memes, all of the 🦀$11🦀, all of the “He” and you make it into something actually productive, and quite witty.

I know that your contracts will never allow you to respond to a post like this, and that’s ok. Just please keep working hard even though times are bleak. You all are the true heroes.

Uh, the current Jmods only inherited a succesful game. I don't think any of them worked there back in 2004 when RS started becoming popular and succesful

And you know Jmods like Osbourne are upper management, right? He's the one who wanted to add RunePass, for example. Investors had nothing to do with that

Edit: Most of the currect J-mods*, large majority though

I’m definitely not upper management, and was not behind Runepass, but I was a fan of what it was trying to do (if not how it was communicated and some of the details).

Could have sworn you were the person who introduced it to the community and thus were the one who communicated about it. I'm not talking about the retrospect here btw. Am I misremembering?

If you are not upper management, then what are you? You're too influential and/or competent to be middle management and have too many people below you to be lower management. Are you actually above upper management, on the Board of Directors then?

And while I have you here, many people here are under the impression that outside investors/owners have any say on the internal direction of Jagex Ltd. Could you unambiguously state that this it not at all the case and that you as a company have full autonomy on how to achieve whatever profits they require of you?

I was happy to be the one who presented it to the community. I knew enough about it and liked the project. Only a small number of mods are happy appearing on livestreams, as it can be a very daunting experience, and for some reason I am one of them!

I am technically middle-management, but my role is a little complicated. I am ‘product owner’ for the Episodic Content team, so am directly responsible for the regular game content (and therefore directly culpable for the lack of updates, which I will talk about in the next livestream), I am responsible for the designers, and - in most instances - am responsible for the game’s design. In terms of management, there are two layers above me within RuneScape, and there are other levels of management above me in Jagex. That’s probably a lot more detail than you need! It may not be hugely high up in the company, but I have enough oversight (I hope) to give you a good idea of what we are making and why.

I can unambiguously state that I have never personally experienced the board changing a design or commissioning a design. We have been left completely alone in that regard.
