s | hello everyone and welcome to another |
---|---|
s | developer update I'm Worthen and today |
s | I'm joined by Genova and we're going to |
s | be chatting a bit about Festival Tech a |
s | tool developed during season of Aurora |
s | to connect others and create lasting |
s | memories that we're excited to integrate |
s | more and more into Sky in the future uh |
s | Genova how you doing |
s | pretty nervous because I haven't been |
s | doing uh developer commentary for a long |
s | time you know ever since covet |
s | oh yeah yeah since the office right yeah |
s | yeah well I think it'll be fine |
s | um next time we're doing this if we're |
s | eating physical office right that's a |
s | long time ago maybe the next time we do |
s | this we can get uh in person again maybe |
s | okay let's go ahead and get into the |
s | questions here so first thing um yeah I |
s | mentioned in the intro here that uh |
s | we're referring to this technology as |
s | Festival attack and I think like we've |
s | done some interviews we've talked about |
s | maybe concert Tech audience Tech do you |
s | want to talk about why we've kind of |
s | Blended on Festival Tech |
s | hmm yeah I mean you know ultimately when |
s | we created Sky we want to create a place |
s | where people can create genuine human |
s | connections with each other this is not |
s | something where you trade with somebody |
s | with a token on numbers but it's |
s | actually emotional connection where you |
s | feel you're understood uh you're valued |
s | and you know that that is a that is an |
s | interactivity between two human beings |
s | that will actually uh help each other |
s | and so when we work on Journey we focus |
s | on just one person with another person |
s | at a time in order to build these |
s | genuine connections we have to build |
s | trust we have to create comfortable |
s | environment where people are willing to |
s | be a bit vulnerable to you know kind of |
s | connect with the other person and after |
s | Journey we we learned many |
s | great design techniques so we apply it |
s | to Sky |
s | and we took the challenge to make it so |
s | that we can go beyond just two players |
s | you know in Sky initially we we went |
s | with eight it's a very complex uh |
s | nuanced social situation because it's no |
s | longer just you and me it could have |
s | third person and third parties and it |
s | could be multiple parties in in the |
s | eight people when we developed Sky when |
s | Sky first launched you know just to |
s | handle a player and figure out all the |
s | positive and negative situation is you |
s | know a blast like you know we've never |
s | tried to tackle building a wholesome |
s | social environment in a completely |
s | anonymous online community and I think |
s | we did pretty decent job to keep the |
s | community wholesome a lot of the times |
s | we will hear from the players that they |
s | wish that the sky could support more |
s | players right so this sense of |
s | connection that you belong to something |
s | bigger could feel like for example the |
s | equivalent of a MMO Guild you have like |
s | 40 to 100 people to really feel you're a |
s | part of a bigger group so starting from |
s | 2020 we want to tackle this challenge is |
s | can we make the player feel they are |
s | part of something bigger and have an |
s | emotional connection with all those |
s | peoples just like a concert we did the |
s | concert season we planned the whole year |
s | to get ourselves ready you know |
s | technologically to support up to 4 000 |
s | people in a space and also from design |
s | side like how can we create an |
s | experience where people don't find each |
s | other annoying because a lot of times if |
s | you you have 4 000 people jamming in one |
s | place you are very frustrated with each |
s | other right we want people to like each |
s | other and appreciate the commodity |
s | experience yeah that took us a long time |
s | to propel but I think after the Aurora |
s | concert if you were part of that |
s | experience I think you probably have |
s | felt something that is uh positive |
s | things |
s | and after that we've seen many players |
s | gathering in the concert space and |
s | wanted to stay there and wanted to have |
s | something to do with each other and |
s | we've seen some pretty interesting flash |
s | mobs that's done by hundreds of not if |
s | thousands of players and that really |
s | gives me a kind of very optimistic view |
s | of the future I mean people are talking |
s | about metaverse these days my thinking |
s | about the virtual world with so-called |
s | metaverse is where |
s | more meaningful and kind of realistic |
s | exchange is happening in the virtual |
s | space and when I played the concert I've |
s | I've been to multiple concerts in real |
s | life |
s | and there are emotions I felt that I |
s | could not feel anywhere else like you |
s | cannot feel that just watching a concert |
s | unfold on the screen |
s | um the this the smell |
s | um the excitement the the the vibrant |
s | energy in the air |
s | you can only really feel it when you are |
s | in the middle of thousands of maybe tens |
s | of thousands of people around you yeah |
s | and and we tried our best to use |
s | interactivity and |
s | to to capture that feeling and I think a |
s | lot of people myself as well felt a |
s | similar energy in |
s | the virtual concert and so after that I |
s | feel very |
s | optimistic or you can also say ambitious |
s | is that can we connect with people at an |
s | even bigger scale |
s | um so from a concert |
s | which is a 4 000 people |
s | like I'm thinking about in real life |
s | what are the situation where hands of |
s | thousands of people can be connected at |
s | an emotional level and feel not alone |
s | and as a positive experience then I |
s | think about a lot of these festivals |
s | music festivals Comic Cons in Japan |
s | there are these religious slash country |
s | holiday |
s | festivals that's happening that's |
s | beautiful when people talk to me about |
s | like what are the great experiences you |
s | have with many people in my vision it's |
s | like a Night Market |
s | with a lot of wars and a lot of people |
s | coming and feeling very happy you know |
s | um yeah that's why initially we were |
s | just saying oh let's make a large crowd |
s | system to support tens of thousands of |
s | players But ultimately we would like hey |
s | you know actually we don't want a bunch |
s | of people to get together and create a |
s | lot of frustration and Stampede you know |
s | people die in real life |
s | what we want is that happy |
s | connected experience like like a good |
s | Festival so that's why we're calling the |
s | festival attack you know hoping that we |
s | can achieve that sense of connection and |
s | warmth in a virtual world as real as |
s | you have experienced you know by |
s | participating a real one so that's |
s | pretty honest answer here it's a good |
s | one it reminds me um you know I had the |
s | opportunity to go out to Japan |
s | um recently and go to um guillon in |
s | Kyoto and I was there for one of the |
s | festivals around um Hanami and there |
s | were so many people out and the Stalls |
s | were out and yeah like I think since |
s | coven began it was really my first time |
s | being in like that kind of like Festival |
s | atmosphere and it it did feel really |
s | good right it felt like I was around a |
s | lot of people having fun and it's a lot |
s | of positivity of mixed together great |
s | food great Vibe great music I feel like |
s | that's the natural uh next step for this |
s | guy is to create a really positive |
s | experience for a large group of people |
s | sponsored we've had days of Bloom and |
s | now we have season of Passage both of |
s | which have used the uh Festival Tech |
s | what do you think Festival Tech brings |
s | to these like specific events or seasons |
s | and how do you like kind of see us using |
s | it in the future going forward to make |
s | players like have more fun during these |
s | different events and seasons |
s | to be honest the the Technology Building |
s | these Technologies |
s | you know it might seem to be trivial as |
s | a video game but it's equally complex |
s | like building a rocket |
s | um I mean you all see how many times |
s | rocket explodes and things didn't go as |
s | we extend expect it when we launched |
s | Aurora concert that night we have 1.6 |
s | million people all trying to get in each |
s | stadium is 4 000 that means we have to |
s | operate 400 Stadium at the same time |
s | hoping that the stadium does not explode |
s | in the mid-air right and that would be a |
s | terrible experience if we bring all |
s | these people in and then in the middle |
s | of the the concert someone just |
s | disappeared |
s | um yeah and it's it really just felt |
s | like launching the rocket and after the |
s | first concert we survived everybody felt |
s | like we just landed on the Moon I mean |
s | you can imagine the energies in the room |
s | of all the people there just like |
s | cheering that nothing breaks |
s | yeah and and that was that was quite |
s | stressful |
s | and so this year we have more ambitious |
s | plans right like we want to |
s | bring the numbers to tens of thousands |
s | we also not only want to just make the |
s | number bigger but also we want to bring |
s | more into activity after all if you |
s | played Aurora concert the interactions |
s | between the player is more of a |
s | co-witnessing you know at maximum you |
s | can you can your energy will be charged |
s | by the people around you but you don't |
s | have any direct interactions besides |
s | just seeing okay we are all like making |
s | the right emails so we're pushing for |
s | both the quantity of how big the server |
s | can support but also the quality of the |
s | interaction so you can see the seasonal |
s | passage is really an experimental season |
s | um if you're in beta you already see we |
s | are experiencing five different ways to |
s | have player interact with each other |
s | coexisting with the the system we're |
s | just trying to see what people would do |
s | if we don't have any interactions we |
s | just put people in the in the space |
s | where they are doing their Quest and |
s | that we've heard the feedback which some |
s | of the player doesn't like the fact that |
s | so many people blocking their views so |
s | we are already working on Solutions uh |
s | to to solve that and this second Quest |
s | you already experienced in life is about |
s | to see what happens if we have a large |
s | group of people in a somewhat of a |
s | survival scenario |
s | uh you don't really die if you fail you |
s | can still be saved by the crowd but we |
s | kind of want to see how does that |
s | interaction unfold we have three more |
s | interactivities some of them are more |
s | competitive some of them are more fun |
s | some of them are more collaborative so |
s | these are kind of our way to really push |
s | the boundary of what we can do with |
s | hundreds not thousands of players and |
s | the challenges we've never seen it |
s | before and there's no one have ever |
s | tested this type of gameplay in the past |
s | the largest online gameplay I've heard |
s | was like World of Tanks which they have |
s | a thousand tank fighting each other but |
s | you know we're experimenting easily more |
s | people than that in complete different |
s | gameplay scenario and honestly the first |
s | Quest when we test this in the beta was |
s | initially with a few dozen developers |
s | versus a few hundred beta testers it all |
s | felt pretty be good we never thought |
s | that there would be a traffic jam that |
s | you couldn't even see the NPC you're |
s | supposed to meet we just could not |
s | foresee this problem because nobody in |
s | the world have tried it once we see it |
s | with 4 000 people yeah it is kind of a |
s | mess so we quickly adjust the number on |
s | a server just just so that people don't |
s | block your view but we have a systematic |
s | solution now that yeah they should never |
s | become a problem because as Sky we have |
s | within the development we have certain |
s | rules we follow one of the important |
s | rule we follow is the experience |
s | supposed to be better if there's more |
s | people if the crowd become a negative |
s | experience we need we really need to |
s | address it and hopefully the whole |
s | experience will be better |
s | what I want to say is like we are we're |
s | experimenting and we're inventing new |
s | things together with you because we can |
s | never find 10 000 people to come test |
s | something with with us you are our only |
s | hope and we promise that we will bring |
s | you something amazing but at the same |
s | times some some rocket is going to |
s | explode uh so I'm also just gonna |
s | apologize ahead of time that sometimes |
s | we don't know what we're making uh we we |
s | will only know if we can see it with you |
s | guys together |
s | that's I don't know if people watching |
s | this will know but we are recording this |
s | on May 4th and and the you are our only |
s | hope I'm just assuming is a Star Wars |
s | reference that's my guess yeah |
s | um yeah and you mentioned you know there |
s | are some specific things we really |
s | learned within like the first few hours |
s | of Passage and to touch on some of those |
s | just specifically I think like we made |
s | the quick decision to reduce just the |
s | total number of players but to Jehovah's |
s | point you know that's kind of just like |
s | a quick fix to the situation but going |
s | forward I think like we're looking to |
s | address just the amount of noise you |
s | hear from other players like obviously |
s | we know we felt it too right when we got |
s | online we were all kind of messaging |
s | each other like this is a lot like this |
s | is very loud |
s | um the Ember attack that I think Nick |
s | messaged about I think we we put that |
s | out on Discord and Twitter that will |
s | make sure that players don't interfere |
s | right while you're trying to experience |
s | those Spirit stories like our folks at |
s | the studio put a lot of time and effort |
s | into those too and like we really want |
s | you to be able to enjoy those the the |
s | noise is a classic situation where we've |
s | never be able to find 4 000 people to |
s | test see how loud everything is going to |
s | be when we work on the concert we |
s | initially have the opposite problem |
s | which people feel like the concert is |
s | um stadium is dead even though we have |
s | like hundreds of people sitting there uh |
s | and and not to mentioning reaching |
s | thousands so the audio designers they |
s | have to design Without Really hearing |
s | you know all the players input but |
s | kind of to control the volume if the the |
s | stadium is fully filled then the volume |
s | reaches to like what we would expect you |
s | would hear from a real stadium and then |
s | the volume will shrink if it's only a |
s | small portion right so when we tested |
s | the sound it was 400 players in beta |
s | it feels totally okay right it's not |
s | very uh distracting but once it's four |
s | sounds |
s | to really high enough high volume nobody |
s | have ever heard it in the test I mean |
s | you probably say well how come you |
s | didn't think about that it's just like |
s | we didn't think about that you know and |
s | uh so so that's why many Rockets |
s | explodes it's just people you know test |
s | all the scenario in a safe environment |
s | and then once put the Real Environment |
s | something was lost right and but now we |
s | we see the explosion with the first |
s | Quest |
s | we've already made changes to to the |
s | audio so system right and you know |
s | obviously when we use Festival Tech in |
s | the future like that factors in like |
s | that that first quest experience really |
s | factors in like what we learned in terms |
s | of like hey what's like the ideal |
s | audience size like what's the best way |
s | to have this experience so I learned |
s | from that obviously we also um are |
s | dealing with we know for some of you |
s | watching that there was an issue with |
s | being able to join your friends during |
s | some of it so like that's also something |
s | we're working on like to be clear we |
s | want you to experience these big moments |
s | with your friends right that was just |
s | something that unfortunately like we |
s | didn't quite catch but going forward |
s | that is a priority to make sure that you |
s | can enjoy those moments with all of your |
s | friends like you normally would for |
s | events and Seasons so yeah a lot of |
s | learnings from that first Quest but we |
s | did want to kind of get out here and |
s | take some time to explain a little bit |
s | about what we were doing with all the |
s | festival Tech I think this video is |
s | probably getting a little long for most |
s | people genoba so I think like yeah any |
s | any parting thoughts Genova before we |
s | close out this video |
s | as we mentioned we want to host a very |
s | amazing festival for the player and |
s | that's our |
s | you know long-term goal and we we're |
s | taking all the necessary steps to |
s | experiment and pop iterate to take us |
s | there |
s | um |
s | and yeah I just want to say you know |
s | thank you for being part of this and |
s | helping us to to make this possible and |
s | and when this this massive |
s | Festival happen in the future you know |
s | it's not just us but also you to help |
s | make this possible uh thank you yeah |
s | whenever you're out there leaving |
s | feedback whether it's on Reddit whether |
s | it's in the Discord just on social media |
s | like we will we see those things we |
s | catalog them and we discuss them and it |
s | really is you all are part of that |
s | development experience with it so you |
s | know tackle what you know is saying |
s | thank you for all the time you take to |
s | test and provide that feedback okay |
s | angry good for now like I said we'll |
s | have more in the future not just about |
s | Festival Tech but a lot of cool stuff |
s | coming up this year please look forward |
s | to a lot of blogs and videos coming out |
s | and yeah thank you so much for joining |
s | us and we'll see you again soon |
s | thank you |
