943s	favorite trial is gonna have to
946s	be probably probably water trial because
950s	there's not really a good way to cheat
952s	at it and so it's kind of the great
953s	equalizer everyone has to do water trial
957s	more or less correctly uh the other ones
959s	there's bypasses you can do parkour you
961s	can you can you know worm your way
964s	through it without doing it properly but
966s	water trial I've yet to see a good
968s	bypass for that
969s	one Wing trials to me are as as fun as
974s	they are infuriating it just drives me
977s	nuts but I do I do like it a lot and
980s	well let's I have some questions of my
982s	own to you before we start tling
983s	Community questions sure uh how's your
986s	sted with gaming like were you always a
988s	gamer how how how did you get into video
991s	games yeah so I grew up playing video
995s	games um I never had my own console uh
998s	but I had an older brother with a with a
1000s	PC um and he was a big gamer uh you know
1003s	we come from the era of overclocking
1005s	meant actually like soldering pins
1007s	together on your motherboard um which
1009s	was a different time um and I just i'
1012s	always love games I love tinkering and
1014s	Building Things uh not not just on a
1016s	computer but like in in real life on
1018s	actual things
1020s	uh so I found when I found code and I
1023s	started learning how to code I realized
1025s	like wow I can I can make stuff and I
1027s	don't have to buy materials um and right
1031s	so you it gets expensive building stuff
1033s	in real life I also build like race cars
1035s	and uh that's very expensive so the last
1038s	real thing that you have built and the
1040s	last digital thing that you have built
1042s	so I am the last digital thing I've
1044s	built I'm working on making a um a
1049s	Online MMO actually where you fly around
1052s	in in airplanes which is really fun um
1055s	and then uh I don't have it actually
1058s	released yet but I'm just um still
1060s	working on that and then the real last
1061s	real thing I built is I built some bird
1063s	feeders actually to put out in the woods
1066s	near my house so you see guys uh trial
1070s	of fire people also have hearts they
1072s	they can they can't look at the birds
1074s	and find beauty at that so thank you

1113s	gonna be extra hard so that's why these

1124s	best day you had you've had working at
1126s	TGC the best day I've had working at TGC
1129s	I'm gonna have to say the best day at
1132s	TGC was about four or five months after
1136s	I got hired I finally got to see all my
1139s	co-workers in person U at an off-site
1142s	event that the company hosted and being
1144s	able to hug all of my co-workers finally
1147s	after having been work from home for
1149s	five months was just the best day um
1153s	hands down easily that's a great uh
1156s	answer man I I am a hugger too as we
1158s	have established on the stream if you
1159s	guys ever meet me anywhere you guys
1162s	please hug no questions asked just come
1164s	and hug uh questions after hugs uh first
1167s	and that was actually an amazing feeling
1169s	I remember seeing Wes and then I'm like

1251s	practice for this I used to do trial
1253s	file fire like every every night um but
1257s	uh I I haven't done that in like a year
1260s	and I uh intentionally did not practice
1262s	because I think it'd be a lot funnier if
1264s	uh I failed miserably so here we are and
1267s	that's the goal my goal today was I I
1269s	know you don't hear that every day but
1270s	is to have you fail miserably in front
1272s	of other
1273s	people someone's got to do it appreciate
1275s	you Tio c c can you share any other
1278s	moment in your life that you failed
1279s	miserably in front of other people and
1281s	you still had a good time oh man so I
1283s	used to be um an organist a pipe
1286s	organist at a church and um one day I
1290s	got up and I just completely forgot the
1291s	song I was playing and I just played
1293s	some completely different song that uh
1296s	had nothing to do with the itinerary and
1298s	nobody in the congregation knew but uh I
1302s	knew and my um Oregon teacher who was
1305s	there knew but you
1307s	know that's all that mattered so I I
1310s	remember when I started playing the
1312s	drums I my friends and I found a a small
1315s	concert like local concert to play and I
1317s	was going to do a fill and oh man the
1321s	nerves just kicked in right during the
1322s	fil and let's say that it ran for like
1326s	five bars longer than you should have
1328s	it's like a
1330s	solo all right back to the question
1333s	quote from Discord will there be more
1335s	adjustments to the player movement in
1337s	the upcoming future oh right into some
1340s	spicy questions that's a that's a very
1342s	spicy one so um we as as most of the
1347s	longtime players know we made some
1349s	adjustments to the movement system um
1353s	during days of feast to support the
1355s	snowboard and um going downhill and and
1359s	doing sick tricks off of ramps and
1360s	things and uh those adjustments were met
1363s	with mixed opinions um we think overall
1366s	it was a healthy thing to change and to
1369s	to modify um it was definitely we
1373s	modified it too much and we did walk
1375s	back some of those changes but I think
1376s	the movement system is actually in a
1378s	healthier State than it used to be um we
1380s	are going to still make some tweaks to
1382s	it though I mean just playing today I
1384s	was noticing like I you definitely used
1386s	to have a little more control on the uh
1389s	on the strafing um and I'd like to add
1391s	some of that back in but one of the
1393s	lessons we learned from that was the
1394s	movement systems pretty great as is and
1397s	should be treated with respect and any
1401s	changes should be like very thoroughly
1403s	vetted before we you know commit them
1405s	into the into the code base so we're
1407s	going to we're going to make some more
1409s	subtle tweaks to to make it a little
1411s	more responsive but we're not going to
1413s	we're not planning any major movement
1415s	tweaks other than maybe some new emotes
1418s	that let you you like the skipping and
1419s	the rolling and such I have a real
1421s	question for me uh Wes so how subtle is
1425s	subtle when you're coding like are are
1426s	we talking how do you measure subtlety
1430s	when you're I need you to grab my hand
1432s	again to you oh thank you I'm a little
1436s	so of course engineer brains running
1437s	here like man we really should
1439s	maintain handholds between these level
1440s	transitions here so uh I'm I'm taking
1443s	notes as far as bug fixes as well you're
1445s	welcome Community you're
1448s	welcome um sorry can you repeat that
1450s	last question because you said making
1452s	some subtle tweaks into movement just
1455s	based on this stream alone right this
1456s	experience so when you're coding how do
1459s	you measure how subtle something is is
1461s	it just like trial and error in levels
1464s	of something or or how how do you
1466s	measure that so the trick is no matter
1469s	how subtle something is the community is
1472s	going to notice CU people and we
1474s	recognize people play this game every
1476s	day people have been playing this game
1477s	for five years now um and people have
1480s	intimate knowledge with how how
1482s	everything works in this game so anytime
1484s	we make changes to core systems like the
1487s	movement system um particularly the
1489s	flight system which is kind of the the
1491s	core of the entire game um someone's
1495s	going to notice and uh people have
1497s	strong opinions about those things
1498s	things so subtle there there's almost no
1501s	such thing as subtle because anything we
1503s	change U affects everything so we're
1506s	we're taking that to heart and we're
1508s	gonna make some sort of process changes
1510s	I suppose moving forward on on movement
1512s	changes so oh no I just killed somebody
1515s	sorry guys I I forgive me for the weird
1518s	noises but the eyes were coming the eyes
1520s	were coming I'm sitting here cool as a
1522s	cucumber my friends are are evaporating
1524s	off my hands left do not let go of my
1527s	handw everything that is hoing just keep
1531s	keep holding it going to another
1533s	question from mein also from
1535s	Discord why are the big dark plants so
1538s	slippery did somebody coat them with
1540s	soap oil or wax was it the crabs it was
1543s	the crabs was it not so it was
1545s	definitely crabs but if you've noticed
1547s	if you look really close at those plants
1550s	they're actually very slick they're
1552s	actually they literally are Co in oil um
1556s	actually one of my favorite shaders if
1559s	you know what a Shader is but a Shader
1560s	is essentially how a 3D model is
1563s	rendered one of my favorite shaders in
1565s	sky is the dark plants Shader because it
1568s	makes them look this this like oily kind
1571s	of if you've seen oil on like the
1573s	surface of water it's kind of that
1574s	effect um and the idea is that these
1577s	these plants they they're spawn of
1578s	Darkness maybe there's like a subtle
1580s	sort of
1581s	environmentalism um theme in there
1584s	oh fine everything's fine I'm fine my
1587s	friends are not fine my I am I've
1589s	sacrificed about half a dozen of you
1590s	already to the
1592s	uh For Your Entertainment Chad For Your
1595s	Entertainment I I hope you find joy in
1597s	it yeah so inde I take no joy in feeding
1602s	friends to these creatures I
1604s	promise but but it's a tough world out
1606s	there right so we do it's not fair but
1609s	somebody has to go no I feel bad I need
1611s	to go back and get get one of these
1612s	people here we going so confirm guys
1615s	dark plants are slimy they are slippery
1619s	slimy yes careful be careful with them
1622s	going SL that slimy Shader actually made
1624s	um working on season of shattering with
1626s	The Shard events made that tricky
1628s	because we wanted those plants to be
1630s	more sort of red orange color to match
1633s	the the storm events and
1637s	uh and um yeah sure enough the uh that
1641s	Shader was so complicated to make that
1643s	oil slick effect that it took a lot of
1645s	work to get them to just just to change
1647s	color just to tint them lightly so yeah
1650s	that that that's a good question those
1652s	those plants are indeed very slippery
1654s	because of the oil see they pay
1655s	attention they do pay attention uh
1658s	they'd probably fry up really nice if
1659s	you chop them up put them on put them on
1661s	Skillet over a
1663s	fire all right guys the sky silos what
1667s	percentage of your skyw work requires
1669s	creative problem solving because it
1671s	doesn't have a set formula to complete
1673s	the task what a weird and great question
1677s	that's a great question um
1739s	so all right let's group back up uh but
1741s	yes back to the question 100% um just
1744s	everything is hard because you can't
1747s	look up the answer you have to just
1749s	research in the code base try to maybe
1752s	figure out who wrote it um maybe that
1754s	person doesn't work for TGC anymore it's
1756s	a constant challenge um it's it's really
1759s	fun though I it's it's just like hacking
1761s	your way through the underbrush
1762s	sometimes um to figure out how things
1764s	work so um that's awesome what a great
1768s	answer thank you I I I am so ignorant to
1771s	the world of engineering that like all
1772s	of these questions feel like they're for
1774s	me that's a great question and a great
1778s	answer shii also from Discord so many
1781s	questions from Discord gameplay wise are
1783s	you considering adding more two playh
1786s	help content for example more puzzle
1788s	solving oriented not just buddy door
1791s	system yes absolutely so we have an
1793s	interesting design challenge at TGC the
1796s	fact that our game is a social game
1798s	right the point of the game is to forge
1801s	meaningful relationships with other
1802s	people but at the same time we
1804s	understand there's a lot of people who
1805s	like to play solo um they like to play
1808s	them by themselves maybe they they have
1810s	friends in game but they still like to
1811s	just hang out and play on their own um
1814s	so we're very careful when we Implement
1817s	things that require more than one person
1819s	to complete um especially like with the
1822s	the new Shard events coming out for um I
1825s	don't know if I can talk about that yet
1826s	beta um I'll talk about it in like for
1828s	days of Bloom we have a a new Shard
1830s	events coming down with some new content
1832s	and we were very careful to make sure
1833s	that these events were still enjoyable
1836s	even playing solo um because we always
1839s	try to lean towards like yeah grab your
1840s	friends make sure you you've got company
1843s	um the game is we like to say that the
1846s	game is easier with friends like we want
1848s	to oh
1849s	no the game is easier with friends I
1852s	said just sacrificing friends to a to a
1854s	goblin out here what do we call these
1856s	squirmal I think we call these dark
1857s	squirmal is that what you call it I just
1860s	call think that's the community given
1861s	name for these is
1863s	squirels I just call it the eyes of Doom
1867s	I am now also totally lost so we're just
1869s	we're just uh we're just walking around

1949s	um and we're always looking for people
1950s	who have talent who have have passion um
1953s	oh we completed the trial look at that I
1955s	did it without dying that's awesome um
1957s	that was quick I I was expecting this to
1959s	take two hours not me too 20
1963s	minutes um but yes I I would encourage
1966s	everyone to apply to TGC if you feel
1969s	like you've got skills that we might
1970s	enjoy um the openings change week to
1973s	week uh because we're always we're
1975s	always hiring we're always looking for
1976s	new Talent we have other project we're
1978s	spinning up um so and you might be
1981s	surprised if if uh you might not think
1984s	you have what it takes but I I also deal
1988s	with impostor syndrome a lot and uh you
1990s	know I I wouldn't be here if I didn't
1992s	beat back the impostor syndrome and
1994s	submit a resume so I'm glad I'm glad you
1997s	say that W because I can definitely
1998s	relate and don't give up guys it took me
2002s	gosh it took me years trying to get to
2003s	TGC you guys uh so don't give up you
2006s	know apply for different things that you
2008s	have skill sets for and maybe you know
2011s	uh Something Beautiful Can Happen yeah
2013s	and the best advice I can give is yeah a
2016s	good resume looks good yeah degrees look
2018s	good but I know at least when I'm
2019s	looking at applications I really want to
2021s	see a good portfolio um and that
2024s	portfolio can be full of school work it
2026s	could be professional work it can be
2028s	your own projects uh I love when someone
2030s	sends us an application and includes a
2033s	portfolio of like little games that they
2035s	made they don't have to be finished
2036s	games they can just be little
2037s	experiments that you know code
2038s	experiments art experiments U that they
2040s	did just for fun and I I love that I
2043s	love seeing that I love seeing you know
2044s	when people have passion just to make
2046s	things um so if you're going to apply
2049s	please show us
2052s	that there you go awesome question uh by
2055s	the way W maybe we can do another trial
2057s	since this was too easy let's get going
2060s	so so I was thinking so we could either
2061s	try doing another trial or I could try
2063s	teaching people some tricks to get
2066s	through fire trial that sounds good but

2075s	might make it excruciatingly hard to do

2085s	trick or answer more questions while I'm
2087s	trying to trick our way through a fire

2095s	right well so now that everybody's
2097s	expecting it I'm going to fail miserably
2098s	but uh yeah let's do it as

2106s	trials area prophecy in in the mean uh
2110s	somebody's asking here what is the best
2112s	most notable season so far in Sky you
2114s	have worked on and
2116s	why oh so I don't like saying when
2118s	something's the best right because
2120s	they're all we try to make every season
2121s	unique in its own way um if I had to
2127s	pick my favorite one to have worked on I
2130s	think it would have to be season of
2133s	moments actually um it it's it's a hard
2136s	choice because they're all they're all
2137s	so good I mean auro was amazing season
2138s	of shattering was amazing um but I so
2141s	there was something really special about
2142s	season of moments where we implemented
2144s	this new camera system and just watching
2146s	the community take this camera and flip
2149s	the whole game upside down with it uh
2151s	people suddenly were going and and
2153s	taking pictures of just the everything
2155s	in this game that I thought was just
2157s	beautiful I mean the the whole game is
2158s	gorgeous top to bottom right U and the
2160s	camera really gave this new lens for
2163s	people to through um and that was really
2166s	beautiful to see and I'm just I feel
2167s	like that was one of our best seasons um
2170s	also the Cosmetics from the uh the
2172s	nightbird whisper were just so cute so w
2176s	had you told me we gonna have FS I I
2178s	would probably have like an Applause or
2180s	or a bunch of laughters tracks in here
2183s	man that that was good stuff good good
2185s	stuff I'm trying to turn them down a
2187s	little bit so I don't
2188s	everybody in chat but you know I live
2190s	for that I live for that uh speaking of
2193s	favorites do you have a favorite area in
2195s	Sky coming from Archer from Instagram my
2198s	favorite area I would say so my favorite
2201s	realm is definitely Hidden Forest Hidden
2203s	Forest team represent and Forest gang
2206s	rise up um the specifically around
2210s	Grandma's house not necessarily
2212s	Grandma's house itself but that little

2396s	where the light kind of hits that you
2397s	can actually cheese your way up this

2435s	Skype those are two very different

2442s	had a very nice childhood um like I said
2445s	I I didn't really play a lot of games
2448s	myself but my my older brother he's 10
2450s	years older than me um he always was a
2453s	big PC Gamer so I grew up with like uh
2455s	big red racing and um salmon m ma stay
2458s	of the tentacle um uh what's the the
2461s	original XCOM which was all like
2463s	underwater submarine style um just you
2466s	know old old school games and uh got to
2469s	make this jump oh man see I try to go
2472s	back to be kind and show you guys how to
2474s	do this and you've cursed me and I'm not
2476s	going to be able to make this jump again
2478s	but uh but that's okay but uh yeah so
2480s	growing up with my brother who was a big
2483s	gamer um and also a big like game um or
2487s	PC modifier he was into you know
2490s	overclocking and stuff back before it
2492s	was included you know in firmware and
2495s	bios for computers uh so he really got
2497s	me into like tinkering um and then I
2500s	picked up a program called multimedia
2503s	Fusion 2 uh which was made by a company
2505s	called click team I don't know if it's
2507s	still around actually uh but that was a
2509s	way for people specifically young people
2512s	to make games it was kind of like the
2513s	equivalent of of we have scratch these
2515s	days which is an amazing program scratch
2517s	is is is just the best um but it was a
2520s	uh graphical game engine so you don't
2523s	actually have to like write any
2526s	code I have to make this jump is what I
2528s	need to do uh you don't have to write in
2529s	code you just kind of drag and drop to
2531s	put Sprites down and
2533s	uh get Behavior to happen and one thing
2536s	led to another I started getting into
2538s	actual writing real code with Visual
2540s	Basic um writing C so a little bit of
2543s	C++ back in the day and then um in
2547s	college I picked up uh well so in
2551s	college I played Journey um when it
2553s	first came out in 2012 and I it was
2556s	first game yeah yeah little little known
2558s	game Journey um made by that game
2561s	company don't know if you've heard of
2562s	them but um gotta make this jump here we
2565s	go NOP can't do it quick question before
2568s	you continue was what is harder is it
2569s	like coding for video games or making
2571s	this jump oh these jumps are way harder
2575s	so much harder you know sometimes you
2577s	nail at first try sometimes and then you
2580s	go back to show people and that's it I
2582s	got it I got
2583s	it oh oh oh oh I've never never gotten
2586s	here before it's interesting spot no
2589s	that's not the
2590s	one um but yeah so played Journey cried
2593s	my eyes out at the end um The Traveler I
2596s	got paired up with they they drew a
2597s	heart around me in the snow uh I just I
2600s	was balling um and I told myself like
2603s	man I want to work for TGC someday um
2606s	which is it's it sounds like a beautiful
2608s	story I share that exact story with like
2610s	15 other co-workers that I've figured
2613s	out which is great it just shows how
2615s	amazing of a game Journey was um but uh
2619s	went and joined a startup right out of
2622s	college making um not exactly video
2625s	games but sort of video game adjacent
2627s	enterprise software work from home
2628s	software um and that eventually led to
2631s	me actually working for the military uh
2633s	making like weapons simulation which was
2636s	challenging and really interesting and
2638s	and rewarding in its own way but I
2639s	didn't really want that to be my legacy
2642s	that I left um and so I don't need to
2645s	get too far into that but I at one point
2647s	I just decided you know what I would
2649s	much rather be making wholesome games uh
2652s	things that bring you know joy into the
2654s	world um and I remembered that uh I
2657s	remember TGC I remembered my my dream of
2659s	joining them someday um and right around
2662s	the same time I had a fateful night of
2666s	going to get boba with uh two my friends
2669s	who happen to be TGC employees and uh I
2673s	said yeah you know I love my job but um
2675s	if there's one thing that could get me
2677s	to jump ship it would be a job at TGC U
2680s	I said that sort of half jokingly um and
2683s	then not jokingly at all uh my friend
2685s	Ash said well there's a engineering
2687s	position open at
2690s	TGC so one thing led to another and uh
2693s	and here I am Wes uh the chat is going

2954s	something I really respect about TGC uh
2957s	is goova has this this phrase the sort

2963s	is a designer we don't care what your
2966s	role in the company is um if you have an
2969s	idea tell someone about it go go find a
2972s	designer find an engineer tell them
2974s	about your idea um and if it's a good
2976s	one you know we'll we'll get it in front
2978s	of other people we'll we'll work on it
2979s	and maybe we turn it into a season um so
2983s	you know we do have a dedicated design
2984s	team we have very very talented writers
2987s	uh and designers who make these ideas
2989s	come to life but the the actual idea
2991s	itself can kind of come from anywhere uh
2993s	we of course love looking through fan
2995s	art from the community sometimes we get
2997s	ideas from that um no no one idea turns
3001s	into a season it's always a clump of
3004s	related things all right we get one idea

3008s	these other things put it together uh we
3010s	like to take maybe like two concepts and
3012s	sort of weave those together into
3014s	something interesting um and so really
3017s	the answer is just comes from anywhere
3019s	um internal or external it's it's uh
3022s	widely different from one season to the

3147s	much respect for TGC as far as making
3150s	games that go against the grain um
3152s	without combat without violence I mean
3154s	there's a little bit of violence when

3271s	sorts um versus a game that just comes
3275s	out once right you just you you crunch
3277s	and crunch and you get it done and then
3278s	you release it and you can relax for a
3280s	little while um Sky we're always making
3282s	new content as as you all know and I
3285s	just I just saved that that was a good
3287s	move I hope you all saw that it was a
3289s	good
3290s	move uh but um you know it's it's work
3294s	it's we have deadlines we have lots of
3296s	deadlines and we always have deadlines
3298s	because we're always releasing new
3299s	content um so I I can't say that it's
3303s	it's all sunshine and butterflies like
3305s	sometimes it's it's a lot of work to
3306s	implement those sunshine and butterflies
3309s	um but I can't stress how rewarding it
3312s	is and how worth it it is um especially
3315s	being surrounded by co-workers who who
3317s	also just love this game love the
3319s	company um it's just it's such a good
3321s	environment uh and it's it's kind of you
3324s	know we're all fighting we fight through
3326s	the stress t together we're not
3327s	stressing each other out it's just the
3329s	nature of the uh of the profession and
3332s	so we we get through it and we make cool
3334s	stuff and it's awesome and there's
3336s	nowhere I'd rather be so awesome well
3339s	there's somewhere I'd rather be than
3340s	fire trial right now but that's
3343s	different burnt nuggets asks why crabs
3346s	so huggable but crab cranky and
3349s	bonkas why are the crabs cranky and
3351s	Bonas so crabs crabs did nothing wrong
3354s	crabs are innocent um I agree if you
3357s	noticed in game there's actually two
3359s	different kinds of crabs well there's
3360s	three now um there's perfectly normal
3364s	friendly crabs and then there's the
3366s	cranky crabs that are covered in these
3368s	little black flakes um and that's
3370s	corruption from the world it's the same
3372s	thing that makes the Krill all the ways
3375s	that they are um and I like to think
3377s	that that stuff it just makes them itchy
3379s	and I know I get pretty cranky when I'm
3380s	itchy so you
3383s	know you and with that guys byy turn off
3388s	yeah you should um you should have
3391s	empathy for the crabs who are are
3393s	suffering from this this corruption so
3396s	um the other so the other leading theory
3398s	uh maybe a crab Bonk is the way crabs
3401s	hug you ever think about that maybe in
3403s	Crab culture the Bonk is how they show
3405s	affection and it just happens to not be
3408s	totally compatible with your wing light
3410s	soed just try to scratch them they're
3412s	going to feel much better

3419s	uh that may have been answered in the
3422s	past but let's see if you have any any
3424s	specific position everything starts with
3426s	zero asks throughout these years of
3429s	coding for Sky Children of the light
3431s	what was the hardest thing that you have
3433s	that you had to code into the game was
3435s	it a festival Tech or something else the
3438s	hardest thing um Festival tech for sure
3441s	uh that was by far the weirdest most
3444s	unique difficult challenging thing that
3447s	I personally have had to uh to program
3451s	in Sky because you have thousands of
3454s	players that are interacting with this
3456s	one object right the the we call it the
3458s	squishy sphere uh which drove the if you
3461s	remember in butterfly fields during the
3464s	um during that season and also we we
3466s	brought it out for the Aurora Redux
3468s	concert um the the big squishy sphere
3473s	being fell to my death again sorry
3478s	um but yeah that thing just working out
3481s	all the Kinks figuring out just the
3483s	logic how do you how do you synchronize
3485s	a thousand people over the network to
3488s	meaningfully influence a gameplay
3491s	element um that was such a big challenge
3494s	uh and we we did it um the most
3496s	interesting part of that was trying to
3498s	figure out um I'm going be a little bit
3500s	of a math nerd right now you know me
3502s	math never not usually I'm going outside
3505s	my comfort zone here uh but the the
3507s	hardest part of that was how do you find
3510s	a 3D median so if you have a number line
3515s	with a bunch of numbers on it um the
3516s	median is really easy but in 3D three
3519s	dimensions even two Dimensions median
3521s	doesn't really mean anything um but we
3524s	needed a way to find the sort of average
3526s	position of everyone while also being a
3529s	real position because if you just get
3531s	the average position of a bunch of
3533s	objects um that Center that position in
3536s	the middle in that the average won't
3537s	actually line up with any of those
3539s	objects so to do 3D median we found that
3543s	average position and then found the
3545s	closest real point to that and I like to
3548s	call that the 3D median uh and if if
3551s	anyone understood that that's great I'm
3553s	proud of you but uh that's fascinating
3555s	so it's literally creating new tech
3556s	right it's like something from scratch
3558s	yeah I don't I I don't know if that's
3560s	like white paper worthy but it was
3561s	definitely an interesting math challenge
3563s	that we had to overcome um and it worked
3565s	which is great so I love I love when
3567s	things work that's how how was I have a
3570s	question for me so how was after all of
3573s	the challenge right of finding the 3D
3575s	median and everything watching the
3577s	Aurora concert for the very first time
3578s	with everybody together how how was the
3581s	experience for you emotionally and
3583s	physically maybe it I just I just just
3586s	jumped off the cliff for no reason um it
3588s	was amazing and nerve-wracking because
3591s	we can't really test that kind of tech
3594s	with 10,000 people right don't have
3597s	10,000 QA members we don't even have
3599s	10,000 beta testers nowhere near um and
3602s	so we had this thing that we had tested
3604s	to the best of our ability um and
3607s	suddenly now it's got orders of
3610s	magnitude more people interacting with
3612s	it than you than normal um and it was
3614s	just my heart was like beating out of my
3616s	chest watching that thing that thing
3618s	come to life um at the uh and that was
3620s	when we were in Germany actually for the
3622s	for um that big conference out there in
3624s	the world record so no no pressure no
3627s	pressure but uh but it all worked and it
3629s	was it was really great and just so
3631s	rewarding that's awesome that's awesome
3635s	unlike trying to do this Skip and fire
3637s	trial which is starting to wear at my
3638s	sanity a
3641s	lot uh tree Moon Flower asks what are
3645s	your thoughts on adding more progression
3647s	per day like uping candle count bonus
3649s	Quest Etc uh they also had an addendum
3652s	that's saying I'm not asking for this
3653s	I'm just asking for your opinion on this
3656s	yeah yeah so we can't
3658s	just candles per day um in a meaningful
3661s	way because if we just give more
3664s	currency then we have to increase the
3666s	price on things and that's inflation and
3667s	nobody likes inflation um so but I'm
3669s	also not on the economy team yes we have
3671s	an entire team that works on the economy
3674s	in making those kinds of decisions I'm
3675s	just a dumb engineer who just makes the
3678s	bleeps and bloops and makes the pixels
3679s	dance around um however I will say we
3682s	are working on some really serious
3685s	upgrades on The Daily Quest
3687s	that will make them a lot more
3688s	interesting a lot more rewarding to play
3691s	through um in very interesting ways so I
3695s	I can't give any more info than that but
3697s	I want to let people know that we we
3698s	know that people play The Daily quests
3701s	daily right that's a daily Quest that's
3702s	the point I play them I do all the daily
3704s	quests daily and I really enjoy the
3705s	daily quests because they're you know
3708s	yeah they're easy you can kind of turn
3709s	your brain off but I always do them with
3711s	friends um so it's just a nice easy
3713s	thing to do but the uh um we have this
3716s	new system I don't I it's it's still
3718s	ways out but we're the daily quests are
3719s	going to get really really cool um
3722s	awesome at some point and I'm going to
3724s	accept ne's help here because I am
3727s	losing my mind trying to make this joke

3771s	thing happened was just like the coolest
3773s	thing um and it it it really took took
3777s	everything out of us right every
3779s	engineer was working full speed every
3780s	designer was was solving problems every
3783s	Community person keyway was tearing
3785s	their hair out making sure all this
3786s	stuff worked as best as we could um but
3789s	uh yeah it was definitely the Aurora
3791s	concert just just an amazing thing to
3794s	have worked on an amazing experience it
3796s	was of my favorite gaming experiences
3798s	period it was a fabulous uh gaming
3803s	experience
3805s	uh oh I guess somebody here is also a
3808s	coder uh in their own right V Gotham
3811s	asks uh I'm dying to know how you're
3813s	rebounding players so smoothly away from
3816s	the clouds via physics do you get a set
3819s	of XYZ and push depending on collision
3822s	whatever that means yeah so our clouds
3826s	our clouds don't have any meshes
3827s	attached to them so we can't use our
3829s	actual Collision system um however the
3832s	math the the the clouds the clouds are
3835s	mad it's m all the way down um they are
3839s	I guess you could call it a density
3840s	field so the the clouds are generated
3843s	based on um yes yes there's a mesh under
3846s	the hood sort of where designers can
3848s	decide like oh clouds will be here and
3850s	here and here um but it all gets fuzzed
3852s	up with ma um and what ends up happening
3855s	is at any point in space we can get the
3857s	density of the clouds and so from that
3861s	point we can make a a what we call a
3863s	density gradient where we can tell the
3866s	normal direction that points out of the
3869s	clouds and we also know how deep inside
3872s	the clouds you are so depending on how
3874s	deep you are we apply more Force to push
3877s	you out of the clouds and our movement
3879s	system is just amazing so just cranking
3883s	Force into the player over time based on
3886s	that density uh ends up giving you this
3888s	nice sort of squishy feeling on the
3890s	clouds but they're they're not a a solid
3893s	mesh that you Ricochet off of and lose
3895s	Wing light
3896s	um they they are just a big squishy
3899s	marshmallow of math a math mellow if you
3905s	will love it oh oh watch this watch
3908s	this let's go let's
3911s	go so close all right W final question
3914s	and then we can wrap up this okay uh
3918s	chicken bug asks have there ever been
3920s	crazy ideas you didn't think you could
3922s	pull off but it worked in the end and
3924s	revers and ideas you wish you could have
3927s	implemented but are currently too
3929s	difficult to
3930s	do interesting that's an interesting
3933s	question um I had some thoughts on this
3935s	one
3936s	actually
3940s	um the so the whole I'll go back to the
3944s	Aurora concert having
3946s	10,000 players interacting in a single
3950s	experience in a game was just Bonkers
3954s	there were people on the team who most
3956s	most of us on the team in fact who
3958s	thought it was impossible like there's
3959s	no way we can do 10,000 people and we
3962s	did it we pulled it off right we have an
3964s	amazing uh amazing CTO who was just like
3968s	inspired all of us to do our best um to
3970s	get things working um he himself did
3972s	tons and tons of work that was just mind
3975s	like mindboggling levels of optimization
3977s	on network code uh I'm also going to
3979s	accept Emily's assistance here to get us
3982s	past this because this jump also is
3984s	doable but uh because I'm chibi and I'm
3987s	a I'm a coward I'm going to accept
3989s	Emily's
3990s	help so at least we can get to the end
3992s	of the trial thank you Emily um let's go
3995s	but yeah the 10,000 player concert like
3997s	no game has done that I don't think any
3999s	other game is going to do that for a
4000s	while um so I I'm just so proud to have
4003s	been involved in that um and then as far
4007s	as things
4008s	that seem like they what what was that
4011s	how did they phrase the second half of
4012s	that question uh the any ideas you wish
4017s	you could have implemented but we
4018s	currently can't yeah so what's
4021s	interesting is um there's actually a lot
4023s	of very simple things that like quality
4026s	of life things that I've been wanting to
4027s	implement um that I'll take a stab at
4029s	and it turns out they're just so much
4032s	more complicated than you'd expect um an
4034s	example is um I just wanted to let it so
4037s	you could teleport home with your friend
4040s	so you're you're holding someone's hand
4041s	you teleport home and then their friend
4043s	comes with you seems Seems simple right
4046s	I fought with this for days there is so
4049s	much Nuance in our like in our movement
4051s	system in our u in our networking system
4054s	it was just it was Bonkers I was I was
4056s	just FL this was a while back I was
4058s	floored by how complicated that was um
4061s	and it really gave me respect for this
4063s	game and how well it works all things
4065s	considered um because there are so many
4067s	moving Parts um and the players of
4071s	course moving Parts moving around the
4072s	world um when you change levels when you
4075s	when you you're holding hands when
4077s	you're when you're flying through the
4078s	air when you're bouncing off of walls
4079s	the way players interact with each other
4081s	is is just it's such a mature technology
4085s	um that you have to be very brave and
4087s	very smart to go in and make
4090s	modifications and adjustments to these
4091s	systems so I'm I'm going to get that
4094s	someday and there's a lot of other
4095s	little quality of life things that I'm
4096s	hoping to hit this year um in the same
4099s	vein just to make like the daily
4100s	interacting with friends part of the
4102s	game just smoother and and more
4104s	enjoyable uh
4106s	but man it's the the devils in the
4108s	details those little things can be so
4110s	hard to to make work when in ways you
4113s	would not expect sometimes it's like
4115s	when you implement a new feature it's so
4118s	easy in comparison so no matter how
4120s	complex this new thing is at least it's
4123s	not interacting with a thousand existing
4126s	systems right depending on what the
4127s	thing is um but something so core to the
4131s	game like holding hands and teleporting
4134s	uh while they seem so simple they're so
4136s	core that they've been iterated on and
4138s	iterated on and iterated on and they're
4139s	so deeply entwined and and woven into
4142s	the the the meat of the game that you
4145s	have to be very very careful you need a
4146s	very sharp scalp to implement changes
4149s	like that so that's awesome I I know I
4151s	know people feel like uh you know things
4154s	can be a little bit broken a little bit
4156s	a little bit buggy um know why these
4158s	never get fixed it's because it's really
4159s	hard and we all we all want to fix them
4161s	but you have to be so careful to not imp
4164s	not make more bugs come out of it so
4166s	it's all it's all matter of triaging and
4169s	priority um but rest assured we are
4171s	trying our best to make this game the
4173s	the best it can be so while also making
4176s	new content which is just what a great
4179s	conversation we had today man thank you
