Hi all,
I was wondering how effective damage mitigation fares against protections and therefore when and who to purchase Oni Hunter's Garb on.
I decided to do the maths and get a feel for how many protections my damage mitigation would be worth.
All the numbers are assuming 100 starting damage for ease.
Also recurring numbers I didn't bother with, so they will be slightly out.
Smite's damage calculation is:
Damage taken = starting damage x (100 / (100 + protections))
So a starting damage of 100 with 50 protections results in 66.67 damage, or 33.33% damage mitigation:
66.67=100 x (100/(100+50))
So therefore:
100 - Damage mitigation =starting damage x (100 / 100 + protections))
Or Also:
Protections = (10000/(1-Damage Mitigation)) - 100
50 = (10000/(100-33.33))-100
So using that logic, we can see that 50 protections are worth 33.33% damage mitigation and visa versa.
So, Oni Hunter's Garb at base, with 60 magical protections and not factoring in God protections:
60 protections = roughly 37.5% damage mitigation
3% mitigation = roughly an additional 8 protections
6% mitigation = roughly an additional 16.7 protections
9% mitigation = roughly an additional 26.5 protections
At base with no other items and no other factors, this item provides 86.5 magical protection.
Not Bad.
But, the damage mitigation only gets more valuable the more protections you have. An added bonus is that damage mitigation also affects True damage, and cannot be reduced by any means.
I would say a highly achievable level of protections for a warrior is 150 protections, both physical and magical. If Oni Hunter's garb is within this build:
150 Protections = 60% damage mitigation
3% mitigation = roughly 20.3 protections
6% mitigation = roughly 44.1 protections
9% mitigation = roughly 72.6 protections
That means, if you have a base of 150 magical and physical protections and you have 3 enemies nearby, your Oni Hunter's garb actually looks like:
132.6 magical protections
72.6 physical protections
So a build with 150 protections and the 9% proc from Oni Hunter's Garb is actually more akin to a build with 222.6 protections.
Except... It's a bit better than that due to damage mitigation not being removable and applicable to true damage.(Caveat being the effectiveness of Oni Hunter's Garb still decreases as your protections from other sources can be removed).
Out of interest here would be the results of Oni Hunter's Garb mitigation with various interactions at 150 protections:
Spirit Robe Proc at 150 protections = 9% + 15% = 24% = An additional 375 protections worth
Bacchus Smashed at 150 protections = 9% + 10% = 19% = An additional 226.2 protections worth
Osiris Max Passive (physical) at 150 protections = 9% + 16% = 25% = An additional 416.7 protections worth
So as you can see.... Damage Mitigation is pretty valuable in SMITE, and even just looking at the damage mitigation, Oni Hunter's Garb is definitely worth picking up.
Even on its own on a god with 30 base protections, the Oni Hunter's Garb seems valuable:
30(base) + 60 (Oni's) = 90 magical protections
90 protections = roughly 47.5% mitigation
47.5% + 9 % = 56.5% mitigation
56.5% mitigation = roughly 128 protections worth
Oni Hunter's Garb 9% effectiveness = 128-90 = 38 protections
Total Item = 98 magical protections and 17.2 physical protections
In Summary, the item seems like a really strong pickup for a lot of Gods, but especially those building protections and even more so for those that have in-built damage mitigation in their kit.
This isn't intended to say "stack protections!!!", or that the comparison to protections is even that good as they have diminishing returns. Instead it has informed me that going beyond 150 protections is not as valuable as just having Oni Hunter's Garb in the build, and maybe that's the same for you!
I did my workings in an excel book which I can't attach to the post, pm if you want it to review.
Side Note: If Bacchus is smashed with Oni's proc and Spirit Robe Proc, 34% damage mitigation, at 150 protections that is a fairly reliable 94% damage reduction.
