People are going to continue using Discord either way. LoL just removed their clan system entirely with no intention to replace it, and many other games are following similar processes.
As communications apps are getting so much better, they are sustaining themselves and thriving and easily outcompeting built-in game systems.
The Clan system really isnt intended and shouldnt be intended to be a new communication app. I think its fair for us to admit that we cant provide a better service than discord on top of the entire game itself.
Being able to unite with other players under a clan tag, to show off your community (even if most of that socializing happens in discord) still has a lot of value in our opinion. Thats why we brought it back. We are seeing plenty of people today who are excited to have that aspect returned to them.
Its a free way to customize your in-game identity and form meaningful groups with other players.
In addition, we do generally like the idea of rewarding player for playing with friends/clans, as it tends to encourage people to make friends and have a better all around SMITE experience, so we are planning to look into new reward systems. The previous one was severely inefficient and outdated though.
We do not really intend to ever make SMITE's ingame comms better than discord though. The comms that the game does currently support are valuable to meet/talk with new people or strangers, but once friend groups are formed thats inherently going to move to discord or a similar app.
We know theres plenty of free cynicism to be farmed with the way we chose to roll out clans from the purest form, but we figured it was better to provide the players with this experience now rather than them waiting months for more clan features all at once.
Also, its tuesday so this meme might not survive anyway, lol. Although I kinda hope it does after writing all this.
