Hello Breakers!

I wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to all of you and introduce myself. My name is Cardell Kerr, and I’m the Executive Producer over here at Proletariat, and I want to talk with you about a game you may have heard of, named Spellbreak.

We launched back in September simultaneously on four separate platforms (XBOX, PS4, Switch, Epic Games store) with our first true foray into the Battle Royale genre. To be honest, I know that I had no idea what to expect here. Launching a new title is always a bit nerve wracking. You spend years of your life working on a game, and when it's finally in the hands of players, you’re always a bit concerned about whether they will like what they are playing. In this case, I feel like the player response was jaw-droppingly positive! It was great to read feedback on the game, and to see your wonderful fan art. It was even humbling to see some of our favorite streamers playing our game, but even more striking to see how the greater community welcomed veteran streamers who had been playing Spellbreak for years while it was in early development.

So, moving forward, we wanted to take this chance to talk about what you can expect from Proletariat and the Spellbreak team. I want to be clear—I am just talking about the most immediate changes. You can expect that there will be more communication around combat/gameplay design, cosmetics options, and narrative/world design over the next few months.

Launching on Steam

Launching on Steam is another step toward ensuring that players can squad up with their friends regardless of their preferred platform. We expect this will bring a whole new crop of  Breakers into the game, so please welcome them with open arms!

Chapter One

Chapter One is our most ambitious feature to date, in that it finally delivers on the RPG portion of our BR RPG goal with Spellbreak. In it, we introduce new characters, explain backstory, and set the tone for an evolving storyline that will impact the Hollow Lands on a far reaching scale, including pushing our verticality more, and adding massive points of interest for Breakers to explore and test their prowess around. We hope that long time players will appreciate finally meeting characters they have only been able to imagine in the past. Additionally, I can confidently say that this will be the main manner in which we will introduce other characters to you.

Deadmoss

Deadmoss is the fully realized area in the southeastern-most region of the Hollow Lands. As part of Chapter One, we brought it up to the visual standards we had in our minds when we conceived of the region, and are extremely proud to share it with you. It is unique in terms of the biomes, given its ominous and gloomy theme and how that affects combat options within Spellbreak. Additionally, with the lighting it has an air of mystery that is both enticing and a bit frightening, likely depending on how much health you have…

With those very large additions out of the way, I wanted to mention another thing that is coming down the pipe. It will not be part of the initial Chapter 1 launch though our hope is to release this before the holidays… let's talk about Matchmaking.

Matchmaking

Matchmaking has been one of the hotter topics within the community for quite some time, and I wanted to take a bit of time to explain how it will be changing. Moving forward, we will be matchmaking before loading into the game, specifically with an eye toward ensuring better matches with players of more equal skill. Additionally, we will be prioritizing latency so that if you play during extremely off peak hours, we can find you a match in a region that is more active but is not extremely high ping for you. Our main goal is to provide players with a better experience, and allowing for matchmaking to happen before you load into the island should make that both faster and more seamless. It’s important to note that these changes won’t be live tomorrow with the patch, as we’ll be implementing them with a hot fix (along with some improvements to the bots/AI) later this week. We will share more details about this when the changes are ready to be added.

Thanks for reading this far! In the future, expect updates from other members of the team, where they will talk more about the specific things that make Spellbreak unique, and how we are planning on growing and refining those elements in future content.
