[2020] Rolling back the matchmaking changes

Hey folks,

We’ve decided to rollback the matchmaking changes that we started making yesterday and continued tweaking today. Unfortunately, no matter what we tried, it wasn’t delivering a better experience for you or meeting the goals we outlined in our previous post. Ultimately, it wasn’t flexible enough to match players up appropriately and that’s not acceptable.

Once the rollback is complete, matchmaking will behave like it did at the launch of Chapter 1 with one additional tweak: Players at Mage Rank 23 and higher will be placed in their own matchmaking bucket allowing them to face players of similar experience.

The changes to bot behavior will be staying, however, as those are working out reasonably well for both new and more experienced players.

Our goal remains the same going forward. Ensuring better matches and matchmaking is still a high priority for us, but this attempt wasn’t getting us there. We’ll continue to work on this and keep you updated as we progress.

We’re going to be rolling this back over the next few hours and Discord will have up to the minute info as things happen.
