Lately I’ve been writing a lot about matchmaking, hotfixes, and the like - but this is an entirely different kind of post!
A few months ago, a couple of us were talking about how we could create a system to encourage and reward people for participating in various streams and the community in general (not just on Discord, but on Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, and so on as well). Would it be possible to give players a path towards earning a Hollow outfit instead of continually hoping for good RNG? Turns out, it is now…
Meet HollowBot!
Think of it like a free battle pass for Discord.
HollowBot will be used to track your participation in community events. Each event has a list of rewards that require a number of points. Points can be earned by players by completing various tasks and then letting the bot know. At the end of an event, all rewards that you’ve unlocked will be distributed and then we’ll kickoff the next event. It lets us do lots of neat things in a way that we previously couldn’t, so let’s run through it!
For your basic, run of the mill, points, you’ll earn them by tuning into our streams and getting the key phrase from the streamer/chat that you’ll then message the bot to claim. Every stream we do will have a different phrase that’s only active for that stream (and different streams are worth a different amount of points based on how long they are or how special they are).
For slightly more points, there might be trivia questions asked or hidden objects on a social media posting that you’ll be prompted to answer or find and these can award more points.
Generally speaking the above are only available for short windows of time, so pay attention and be quick about getting your phrases in!
Finally, there are single-use codes that can award large amounts of points. These are generally as rewards from contests, for going above and beyond in your interactions with the community, or more even more rare things (literally there’s one I made called “Made Jesse Laugh”. I don’t expect to hand this one out much!).
The first event will be centered around Chapter 1. It runs roughly from today through early/mid March and players can earn their way towards a few promotional outfits, including a Hollow. For the first event, the reward table looks like this:
Gloom at 250 points
Treeline at 500
Lavender at 1000
Sundown at 1500
Nightshade at 2000
Hollow at 2500
The goal is that if you’re active for the entire event, you’ll be able to make it to the Hollow.
So how do you use it?
The first thing to do is to find HollowBot on our Discord! It sorts near the top, just below the Mods.
You’ll then need to register your Discord and Spellbreak accounts with it by messaging it:
!register YourSpellbreakID#1000
So if your account was jesse#1000, you’d message it:
!register jesse#1000
Then you’ll need to confirm that (to prevent typos and the like) with:
!confirm YourSpellbreakID#1000
Once you’ve registered and confirmed, you’re all set to start earning points!
You earn by points by either entering a key phrase or redeeming a code like this:
!enter
This would look something like this if the phrase was "hollow lands":
!enter hollow lands
Or
!redeem
Codes will look like this:
!redeem aaaa-bbbb-cccc-dddd-eeee
After doing either one of these successfully, you’ll see a printout of your current points and any new rewards you’ve qualified for. Don’t forget, !enter phrases are time-limited and only active for short windows, but can be used by anyone, while !redeem codes last forever but can only be used by one person.
You can see your current event status, along with how many points you have and what rewards you’re eligible for (and have yet to unlock) by doing:
!status
And at any point, if you need help, you can also do:
!help
This will give you a printout of the available commands and what they do.

Other notes:
- This is the first test and there will likely be bugs. Please post about them or otherwise let me know and I’ll try to fix them up.
- Rewards will be distributed at the end of the event, so don’t expect them right away when you cross a threshold.
- If you spam HollowBot, it will ignore you, so don’t try to haphazardly guess codes and whatnot.
