It’s a dumb question but I’ve been getting really into The Division 2 (yeah I know came to the game a little late). I’ve always wanted to play both games and I absolutely love the lore/story behind the world of The Division (it doesn’t help that what happened in The Division 1 can easily happen in the real world here).
Personally for me, here’s my agent’s backstory:
My agent (I guess I’ll call him the Sheriff for now) was the son of immigrants who came from Asia (Mom was Thai, dad was Japanese). The Sheriff grew up in a pretty bad neighborhood on the streets of Los Angeles and got into a lot of fights growing up. He wasn’t a bad kid or anything but he did struggle in school. In high school though, he started shaping himself up for success and was an academically accomplished student who had a strong interest in politics and military history (the Sheriff became a very proud and patriotic American around high school too). He received a lot of scholarships from colleges and universities but decided to say “screw that”, choosing to instead enlist in the United States Marine Corps.
The Sheriff went to boot camp in MCRD San Diego and was a good recruit. He was a squad leader in his platoon and remained the only squad leader to not be fired from his position during the three months of boot camp. He attended MCT at the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton and after completing MCT, he reported to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for his MOS school (he was an 0811/field artillery cannoneer). He finished MOS school at the top 5% of his class and later reported to Camp Lejeune, NC for his first duty station. After four years, the Sheriff decided to reenlist, becoming a Marine Security Guard/MSG. He was stationed at the US Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand and Seoul, Republic of Korea before finally being honorable discharged and leaving as a Sergeant.
After being honorable discharged from active duty, the Sheriff decided to move to Richmond, Virginia and attend Virginia Commonwealth University, where he began studying political science and international relations.
A year after being discharged from active duty and while in college, the Sheriff decides to re-enlist by joining the United States Marine Corps Reserves, this time in the intelligence field. He proved to be a great Marine and intelligence analyst and along with his outstanding military service, he found a nice consulting gig working for the State Department. He contemplated joining the FBI but by that time, the Division came to his apartment in the dead of night and recruited him. It didn’t take long for him to accept becoming a Division agent.
Three months after the Sheriff became an agent, the Dollar Flu Pandemic struck the world, inciting violence and chaos everywhere. The Sheriff was forced to hole up in his apartment, barricading the doors and only going out to scavenge for food and essential supplies. Luckily he had a nice stack of guns and thousands of ammo stocked up along with a decent amount of food and water, which he used to help rally his neighbors into forming a small community. While he didn’t explicitly lead the small community that he helped form in his apartment building, he did play an instrumental role and eventually became the head of security, especially after he and 10 other guys successfully drove away a group of bandits trying to get inside their apartment building. Soon enough though, Directive 51 was signed off, activating the Division. By now the Sheriff had established himself. He had a girlfriend, helped train people in using firearms, taught basic first aid, etc. He enjoyed life. But when the 2nd Wave was activated, he had to respond and eventually marched out to Washington.
