So I'm an active Path of Exile player who recently started playing Division 2. First off, Division 2 is a good game and Massive is a good team because they atleast communicate with the community and are trying to fix the issues that are being brought up which is sadly rare nowadays. So, I would like to help them by providing insights from another very successful game. I'm sure they already know some of these solutions but nonetheless:

Regarding RNG: POE, even though it still has problems, has nearly perfected the grinding process which is what looters are all about: the grind. So , even though the rng is atrocious even in PoE, they give the players certain tools to manage it. The idea is to manage RNG in a way that it gives grinders occasional rewards, so that they keep playing.

  1. Currency items and crafting: So how this works out is that in PoE you get items which allow you to craft gear. Without going into too much detail, I would like to point out a particular currency called fossils which provide certain modifiers to crafting like "More spell modifiers, no attack modifiers" or "More health and armor modifiers". So imagine, a similar currency system which allows us to craft with modifiers such as "More offensive attributes, no utility attributes" or "Increased chance of crafting Gila Guard" etc. You can even make the better modifiers like "More damage to elites/ Weapon damage" extremely rare, so that it is balanced.
  2. More average Exotics: Here, what PoE does is introduce farmable exotics that while not as good as rare(yellow) gear, it allows players to get started with their endgame grinds. They also have chase uniques like we have Eagle Bearer here but having such average exotics makes it easier for people to get started with an average build while they farm/craft for their endgame gear.

Regarding content: Here, I feel Division 2 is really lacking. They need to give players more endgame objectives. PoE players have a wide variety of endgame options.

  1. Some of them enjoy mapping(similar to expeditions) which has 16 tiers of difficulty and hundreds of layouts
  2. Some enjoy killing bosses
  3. Some enjoy crafting the best gear
  4. Some enjoy group play
  5. Some enjoy endless dungeon mode/ horde mode.

These are only some of them. All of them are rewarding and have different types of rewards/chase uniques associated with them.

Regarding the community: I see the community give the developers a lot of hate (even though they too are right in their frustrations) which I feel is sad because they are really trying guys otherwise we wouldn't have SoTG podcasts. Anyways, there are ways to manage this too.

  1. Outline your roadmap and stick to it: For a long time in poe, melee was broken and unplayable while spells and ranged skills were OP. However, the community was not complaining (much)(:p) because the developers stated that they would fix it in patch 3.7 which they did and everyone was happy. So, your community does not need you to introduce new content now or fix PVP now but we would like to know at least when we can expect it.
  2. Choose your battles: You can never make everyone happy. In PoE, the developers knew they could not balance the game around PvP so they haven't even tried it yet. I'm not telling you to ignore PvP, but to choose what problems you will be solving. If you spend the entire time putting out fires, you can never move ahead.

That's most of what I had to say. I'm sure I'm missing some points. For anyone interested, you can also check on Chris Wilson's speech at the GDC on how they designed Path of Exile to be played forever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pM_5S55jUzk

I guess you don't agree with him. I think aggressive tone is a better description then toxic. I'm not a fan of it.
