[2020] Can I earn specialization points if I don't have the specialization selected?

As per title, I've unlocked firewall and tech but they both have minimal points. Can I just play with marksman and get specialization points for firewall and tech or do I need to have tech selected to get tech points, then select firewall to get firewall points, etc...
