If you’ve enjoyed some of the base building elements on newer curated maps, you may be interested in the Composite Structures mod, by VandaltheMenace! This mod adds a number of new structure shapes, such as corner ramps, curved walls, and peaked roofs.

What’s next for Escalation?

We’ve seen a lot of players enjoying Escalation so far! Since its release last month, the map developers have pushed out a number of patches with bug fixes, balance changes, and other minor improvements or additions.

We hope everyone has been enjoying Escalation! With any map release, there are always many balances and adjustments to be made – a constant process for sure, but with most pressing things sorted, we can now start to add much more new content for players to enjoy.

Our plans include expanding the map for to make space for bases, adding more locations for players to loot and explore, quality of life adjustments, and of course, adding more fun items, decor, and equipment for players to use! Sneak peek below: We plan on having an update come out at the end of next week, so stay tuned!

Answering Your Questions…

Q: Is Unturned still going to use Unity?
Unturned 3.x will continue using the Unity engine. We could theoretically move the game to another engine, but it’d be a long, difficult effort and mods would be incompatible without also converting. If rebuilding from the ground up in another engine, it may as well be an entirely new game.

Q: Can you add a way to get mythicals on premium skins!
This is actually possible! You can get mythical variants of premium skins with the skin crafting feature.

Q: Are you still thinking about making the game open-source? What’s preventing this from happening?
It’s been on my mind for a long time. I would need to replace any third-party systems like A*PFP before the source could be made available. If accepting pull requests, I worry about the amount of work needed to review and collaborate on them – simplifying unnecessary complexity has been a priority for me this past year. I think making Unturned’s source available will happen in my lifetime. Worst case scenario, if I died it could still be made available.

Q: Will you ever do another workshop mystery box since curated maps have boxes again?
There has been a lot of interest expressed in this, so it is a possibility. Most likely, it would be a collection of individually-submitted cosmetics on the curated workshop.

Q: Do you recommend using OpenMod instead of Rocket/LDM?
I don’t have a specific recommendation. A benefit of OpenMod is its active maintenance and updates. On the other hand, Rocket should be very stable.

Q: Why don’t curated map weapons get skins?
The concern in the beginning was long-term support for curated map weapons. All purchasable skins and cosmetics are included in the base game files, but if something happened to a curated map where the weapons became unavailable then the skins might as well be worthless.
