The clues for the offerings are in the message on the altar. Look at the clues around it too. Every altar has clues to help you find the right offerings.

Another hint to help you out, don't rush. Prepare for adventures carefully, and make sure you're prepared for failure too so that if (when!) you do die, you're not stuck with nothing.

Main Menu -> Editing Tools -> Level/Prefab Editor gives you the most tools and fewest restrictions for building.
