First of all thanks for responding and listening to fans. Nobody will agree about everything, but as long as you are really listening to fans then that’s the most important thing you can do as a dev.
Second let me make it clear that - while I can’t speak for everyone - my issue was not with making the game “harder”. Personally I do a lot of things to make the game more challenging (currently on Plains in a zero-death, no armor run). I just feel like serpent stew had that perfect risk/reward balance if you could pull it off early game, and this change effectively killed it with nothing to take its place.
I think your intent with the change was good; you wanted to open up different styles of play so you have foods to focus on hp or foods to focus on stamina. But the issue is that it just took too much away without giving anything back - except for tanks because blocking now revolves around HP. That’s great but not all of us like to play heavy tanky builds.
Let’s take the “agile archer” build for example: you have to rely on tactical movement and positioning to avoid damage rather than reducing incoming damage with heavy armor. It’s unconventional but it makes for a really exciting, fast-paced style of combat in the endgame. Stamina management is crucial, but you still have to keep your HP above a certain point so you don’t die in one hit. But in the new system that’s basically impossible - you have to choose stamina OR hp, and if you mix them up you don’t get enough of either.
It basically made this entire archetype of character unplayable. And that’s my real issue with the changes, at the end of the day I think your intent was to open up different styles, but in execution it’s just pushing us all to play the exact same way: grind a lot of ore and get the best gear and then run around blocking damage and whacking things with a weapon.
We still think it’s a great game, and I hope you realize that the fact that this many people reacting so strongly to the changes just means that we really care about and enjoy the game. You’ve done an awesome job and I’m glad you care about what the fans have to say.
thanks! yea we are looking into if we need to ease up the difference between hp & stamina heavy foods a bit. Also better bows probably drain a bit too much stamina atm.
